Question 7

What do you feel you have learnt in the progression from the Preliminary task

to the full product?

As you can see there is a difference between my practice magazine and the magazine draft.

The photography I feel has improved due research on the photography used in music magazines. In the ancillary cover I used a dark background and also blurred the background to make sure the subject was the main focus.

From my band image research I found the images of bands used in magazines used plain, light coloured backgrounds which guarantees that the subject is the main focus and makes the image look more professional.

Also I improved on the image editing skills. For ANTHEM I increased both the brightness and contrast of the images which I did not do on my first magazine

also I used lighting when taking the image. In both I used rule of thirds. However feature such as lighting and the correct editing changes the quality of the image so it is more suitable for a magazine.

The layout and design of the contents and front cover has improved proven by aspects such as masthead size which I found from research was a large feature on the cover.

Therefore the two mastheads contrast. I also found that the masthead is similar to a logo which means the college magazine masthead is not similar to on an official magazine.

By analysing magazine I found that there is only one main coverline which is larger than the other small coverlines, and on my college magazine there is no main cover line.

Finally another improvement I made was making the coverlines frame the image so it is a main focus point instead of having to blur detail in the background.

In terms of the contents page the layout on my first magazine was very basic whereas from research I found magazine contents pages where full of both information and images encourage the reader to read certain articles.

From my product research I found that the amount of information included in the contents depends on the house style. For example Kerrange has a busy contents page. I did continue my house style in the college magazine and in ANTHEM by using the same colour scheme and text.

The contents page has to be visually appealing and appear professional and I feel in ANTHEM I have attempted this more. The contents is not as important as the front cover which draws the reader to the magazine but it encourages people to read certain articles.
