HOW WE ATTRACTED OUR AUDIENCES ATTENTION?

PROPSThe props used in the opening of the film are also used to attract audiences. The props we used were:

• Clothes

• Knife

• Mobile Phone

• Van

• Baseball bat

CLOTHES• The clothes being worn in the opening are very traditional to that of a typical football

hooligan. They wear either dark jeans/tracksuit bottoms, then wear a t-shirt with or without a jumper (depending of the type of day) and then they finish with coat to go over the top added with a scarf.

Football hooligans One of our football hooligans

KNIFE • During our opening we aimed to try and add violence to create enigma to attract our

audiences attention. The knife is a genre signifier and consequently and will attract our audiences attention because it means that there will be violence and action involved. All football hooligan films have violence within it so the audience expects to see this within our opening as well.

MOBILE PHONE• The iPhone shows that the characters are middle class and will attract people in the

middle class audience as they can relate to this. Also it will attract the audience because it shows what time period our film will take place in. From our primary research we found out that our target audience like to watch current films, therefore, it will attract our audience. Also by using this high technology it shows that in the rest of the film, we will have more of this as for football hooligans this is a way of organisation for fights.

VAN• The Van used in our opening created enigma as it created a hidden identity for the

characters sitting in the van as we couldn’t see them. This attracted our audiences attention as they would question what was going to happen and where they were going. Also the colour of the van is white/silver and in most films these days if there is a criminal they are normally driving a suspicious white/silver van.

BASEBALL BAT• The baseball bat is a genre signifier and consequently will attract the audiences attention

because it means that there will be violence and action involved; one of the main reasons that they are coming to see our film is because of the expectations of what previous films have produced of this genre type. They expect to see violence so that’s why it was beneficial to show this within the opening.

SETTING The setting was also key for us to attract our audiences attention. The different settings we used were:

• House

• Alley Way

• Football ground

HOUSE • The main setting of the opening is in Billy’s house which is used to show the wealth of the

character and his family. It represents the middle class making it more relatable to what our target audience live in as well. This will therefore make them more involved with the film.

ALLEY WAY • We used an alley way which will attract our audiences attention as this is a setting that

has featured within other films of this genre type. It is a necessity for our film to look like previous films. This will make them more enticed with the film as it is something that our audience will be used to.

FOOTBALL GROUND• We filmed at Dagenham & Redbridge as this is an area which is rough and would suit our

genre perfectly. In our opening you will see people in large groups, spitting, causing disruption and chanting. This is typical of the football hooligan we wanted to capture on match day.

COSTUME For our film we had to think carefully about the type of clothing these men were going to wear. The clothes worn throughout are all relatable which means that no one sticks out from the crowd. It wouldn’t have worked if they had all worn suits otherwise it wouldn’t fit our genre type.

Costumes are for:

• Billy

• Paul

• Danny

BILLY’S COSTUME • We chose for him to wear, as his our main character, jeans, a jumper, a coat, and a scarf

as this is a typical stereotype of what a football hooligan would wear. The blue scarf resembles the team he supports. He is the leader of one group of hooligans as he carries the knife, so it shows his dominance.

PAUL’S COSTUME • This character is best friends with Billy so he is highly remarked as being one of the

dominant figures within the group as well. We chose for him to wear black as it shows his power and authority. This entices the audience as he looks dangerous.

DANNY’S COSTUME• This character is unknown in the opening titles so for the audience not to see his face

immediately grabs their attention as they wont to know who he is. He is wearing joggers and a puffa jacket as it shows his youth. The bag you see is holding something red and this is a hat that he wears to show which team he supports as well.

SOUND• The sound will attract the audience because it’s original and upbeat which is that of what

our target audience listens to so will entice them more. This means that our target audience will be familiar with the music so will enjoy it. Furthermore, it does make our film distinctive and memorable for the audience.

EDITING• Our editing will attract our audiences attention because it has a mixture of different cuts

which makes it unpredictable and that we change the setting every other shot to be build up the enigma. This is some what entertaining for the viewer as they have to comprehend why were doing this and what each character is doing in the opening. Also we have some slick and clean cuts to sharpen up the image we are presenting. This will attract them because it is a feature of a film that they want to see within the opening; we know this of our primary research we conducted on our target audience.

ACTORS• All three men involved within the opening are wearing similar clothing of that of a typical

football hooligan. Most of our target audience would have been to football matches and would have seen the hooligans in and out of the stadium causing trouble. Our film would emphasise the fact that what they do is dangerous so it advisees our target audience to be aware the next time they go to a game otherwise they could cause harm to themselves.
