QUESTIO

‘HOW DID YOU ATTRACT/ADDRESS
YOUR AUDIENCE?’
ADELLE
CLARKE
MISE-EN-SCENE
When planning Mise-en-scene i had to take into account that it would be the
main thing to attract my audience. Because of this i looked into similar genre
films and carefully look at how they used lighting, setting and characters. I could
then begin planning how i was going to attract my audience. I decided to keep
the ambient lighting low to create an eerie atmosphere. This was also created
through the use of a garden setting as it is enclosed but still mysterious as it
could imply the movie will occur around the houses family but also make the
audience question the significance of the girl and her surroundings. The girls
appearance is also a way of attracting my target audience. This is because she is
young, pale and mysterious as you are never sure who she is in the opening.
This makes my audience want to find out who she is and find out why she is
where she is. Her lack of identity and childish appearance would attract my
audience because they would be able to relate to her age and innocence enabling
them to enjoy the mystery and eerie atmosphere the Mise-en-scene conveys.
EDITING
The use of post-production editing could also be used to attract an audience.
My editing would enable me to attract my targeted audience as it creates
mystery and forces the audience to imagine their own cinereous about how the
rest of the movie will pan out. The most effective part of my editing for this is
the flickering and static of the girl when she is in shot. This is because it puts
her existence into question and implies she isn’t actually there. The paranormal
aspect my editing implies would attract my target audience because it allows
them to imagine their own plot thus forcing them to engage with the opening
and enjoy the mystery.
SOUND
Sound is another way of attracting an audience. I used sound to create an eerie
atmosphere. I did this by using non-diegetic music similar to an old jewellery
box type sounds and mixing it with static. The non-diegetic background music
helps create tension as it continuously builds to a peak. The static sounds also
help build to the tension peak as they emphasis the girls arrival. Together, with
higher sound levels at more eerie parts like closer to the end, they create
suspense for an audience and help to convey danger whilst still conveying the
girls childhood innocence with the music type. This attracts my target audience
because it creates adrenaline because of tension which my target audience would
look for in a horror movie.
TITLES
The titles are also an important part of attracting an audience. I did this by
keeping mine basic by using white writing on a black background separate from
other shots. This makes them stand out from the narrative and emphasises the
importance of them. The two that will attract an audience most is the beginning
and the title at the end. The first is to help give the viewer some background
information and to add to the narrative. This and the horror themed font of the
title at the end are simple but effective as they don’t take anything away from the
main action but still add to the narrative. These would attract my target audience
because they are almost effortless but give them an implication about where the
narrative is going.
UNIQUE SELLING POINT
My unique selling point would be the editing used to make
the girl appear like she is there and suggest she also isn’t.
This is because it is mysterious and might confuse an
audience. It will also allow them to imagine different
cinereous about what the main plot may be as not much is
let off in the opening. This is beneficial as an audience
would then be inclined to watch the rest of the movie as
they would be curious about what would happen.
