Evaluation Question 4How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Cameras Throughout the entire coursework activity up until a few

weeks ago, we used a Sony MiniDV and a Mini HD camera the two cameras we have been using for filming the video and Final Cut Express for Editing. For The Photo shoot we used a Panasonic camera provided to us by the Ludlow College Photography Department and were edited using Adobe Photoshop. Originally My Digipak and Advert designs used sourced images from the internet and print shots from the film to mock up my designs which were then replaced by high quality images taken from Photo-shoot.

InDesign One of the most useful interactive programs that I have been

using throughout both my AS and A2 courses is InDesign which I have used once again to design and improve on the digipak and advert’s layout. Nevertheless my knowledge of it is still limited as I don’t use it often in other subjects. It allowed me to design individual elements of the digipak which could then be put into a bigger layout. I was able to have more flexibility in terms of choices of font and colour. InDesign, like Photoshop is also made by Adobe which makes them both easily compatible together.

YouTube This is the first time that I have used YouTube, in a Media

Coursework project, not only for just posting our video onto, but also for both finding music videos for the music video analysis and Genre Research back in September and October and for researching inspiration ideas for my music video. In putting our video on YouTube we could get feedback and comments and we can see how many people have viewed it. It’s accessible to everybody and can be easier for everyone to use because you can embed the link into the email whereas with Facebook you can share your ideas with friends and follow suggestions.

Slideshare Unlike the last project, I haven’t used Slideshare for

presenting PowerPoint slideshows for much as before, only using it throughout the Genre Research stage of the course for researching my target audience profiles and for creating a moodboard displaying the purposes of music videos but despite that I have had little trouble using it. It’s the most commonly used method of sharing and posting presentations onto blogs.

Blogger After learning how to use this program last year, I’ve now felt

more comfortable with doing my work on blogger at home as well as in college which gave me more time to think of ideas during the creative progress . Another thing to note of is that my tutor has sometimes posted comments on my blog telling me what needs to be improved, where I have gone wrong with my work or if it’s perfect and doesn’t need to be improved. The advantages of using a blog are that you can interact with the reading audience and share our creative work globally.

Did I think that new technology actually had too much of a say in my production work? According to David Gauntlett, “The critics of 'Media Studies seem happy to

dismiss or disregard the rise of everyday creativity online, presumably because they are more comfortable with the old models of communication, where media producers were always powerful institutions and so you could wheel out tried-and-tested critical discussions of power.” You can say that this statement had an influence on the production as although we did use a lot of new programs such as Final Cut Express and YouTube for this project, we still had to use mostly older programs such as Word and PowerPoint for either describing analysis's of videos, both from YouTube and our own cameras, or even writing on the blog itself to write introductionary paragraphs. The digital side of this project however has been extremely useful as the amount of research sources provided from the internet and as far as our own video was concerned, the digital parts helped us to splice together the film whenever it was shot in different locations.

What is the relationship between creativity and new media technology? In my opinion, with these new web 2.0 technological programs

and sites such as Indesign and Facebook, people have been using these programs to share their ideas and thoughts worldwide and become more familiar with newer technologies which gives the world a higher sense of commutation and inspire them to keep moving forward with these new privileges. Throughout our production, it was an honour to finally use HD cameras to get better images and learning how to edit videos and post them onto YouTube. Despite a few setbacks such as the filming process lasting longer then we had hoped, we have had, overall a fun experience.

How have I used Media 2.0 Technologies to push my work in new directions? Although I haven’t used Facebook at all throughout the entire

production due to personal reasons, I have used YouTube not only for posting drafts of our video and storyboards online, but also for research purposes while studying other music videos in the “Research and Planning” stages. My partner Toby Wlyde also managed to email the artists Fight the Bear to ask for permission for the use of their song “moon “ to be featured in our video. Other than YouTube, we also used i-video on the mac’s to record a commentary from a selected group of people to talk about what to improve on the advert and digipak designs.
