DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT AND WHY?

Importance of identifying and choosing the correct institution to distribute a film?

It's vital that I choose the appropriate institution so when it comes to the distribution of my thriller, I have the correct one to meet my needs, so it becomes more successful than others. There are important factors which need to be taken into consideration when selecting a distribution company, for example: audience, genre and industry reputation.Audience – This is one of the main factors which needs to be taken into consideration when choosing a well known and experienced institution for a media product. By selecting and applying the appropriate institution, the audiences are more likely to re-watch a film which has been distributed by the same institution if they have had a positive experience in the past. As a result, it's vital that we identify the correct institution for our media product for our audience since our thriller will only be bought by people aged 15 and over. Furthermore, audiences have expectations for certain institutions.Genre – Identifying the appropriate institution who are specialised in distributing thriller films is important since there is a higher possibility of the audience watching a new thriller film distributed by them, if their reputation is good. As a result, it's important that we select a media institution that’s especially experienced in thriller films, such as New Line Cinema. This institution is known for distributing adventure, drama, fantasy, psychological and thriller films.Industry Reputation – This area is as important as the other two, since the audience would be more interested and more likely to watch a film which has been distributed by a known and popular institution. An audience is less likely to watch a film which has been distributed by an institution that has received negative feedback from previous films that they have distributed. Therefore, it is important to choose the correct institution because as a group we also want the reputation of our thriller to be popular and memorable by many of our audience.

Chosen institution to distribute my thriller and

why?After researching and analysing thriller based institutions, myself and my group have come to the conclusion that ‘Dimension Films’ would be the most suitable, due to their experience and knowledge of thriller films. Dimension Films was originally owned by ‘The Walt Disney Studio’ and now it’s currently owned by ‘The Weinstein Company’. Additionally, the existing popular thriller films ‘Scream’, ‘Halloween’ and ‘Sin City’ have been distributed by ‘Dimension Films’ very successfully which has allowed us to confidently select this institution to represent our opening. From my findings, this institution is well known for their reputation and commitment towards the thriller genre. This institution has a great reputation since they have distributed many conventional thriller genre films within the industry.Our group has selected this institution due to the previous successful films that they have distributed, and the success of those films. Finally, audience was another reason why we have chosen this institution since we believe that ‘Dimension Films’ is popular amongst the younger generation.

Compare your thriller to existing thrillers made by this institution‘Scream’ is a popular horror/mystery film. However, it also includes

thriller genre content. When comparing this film to our thriller opening, it’s clear to see that we have used the same mystery genre. Within the film ‘Scream’, an antagonist is dressed up with a cloak and mask and is hunting down the victims one by one. Within our thriller, the antagonist

appears only once which creates mystery and leaves the audiences questioning who the antagonist is and why the individual has broken into

the apartment. Similarly to ‘Scream’ the identity of our antagonist is hidden as well since he has been placed in the darkness. When

comparing our thriller to ‘Scream’, we could identify that the victims in both thrillers wears a white top which connotes vulnerability and

innocence within their character role.‘Halloween’ is another popular horror/thriller film distributed by

‘Dimension Films’. This film has also inspired our thriller opening. Within the film ‘Halloween’, they have used a pumpkin in the first few seconds

of the opening, which has been placed in front of the entrance of the house beside the small staircase to represent that it’s Halloween to the audience. Within our thriller, we have also used a pumpkin within the

first few seconds of the opening and we have also placed this in a similar way, so that the audience understands it is Halloween. Moreover, the antagonist within our thriller is similar to the antagonist in ‘Halloween’

since their identity is hidden by a mask and the dark lighting in the scene.

Choosing ‘Dimension Films’ to distribute my thriller film ‘The Unseen’ is beneficial because ‘Dimension Films’ has a great knowledge of the thriller genre due to previous production success. Therefore the audience will be more interested in watching my thriller film which will increase the amount of views and popularity. Furthermore, another benefit will be that due to their reputation within the film industry, my thriller will receive a wider audience which could reach international status, therefore increasing the amount of profit. ‘Dimension Films’ isn’t only successful at distributing thriller films, they are also successful in distributing other genres including: adventure, drama, horror, romance, war. This further increases their appeal within the industry.
