Evaluation Question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real

media products?

Page 2: Evaluation Question 1

My use of media• My film is based on a sequence of bank robberies where the

female character double crosses her team(s) multiple time but then gets caught up in the wrong job and get caught in her act. This piece of media is based around the idea of a thriller genre linking it to many other uses of media which my group and I thought of in the pre-production of our filming. My thriller is called ‘The Latenter’ which means someone who is hiding something or is covering something up. This was done in another language so that the audience would be intrigued into the meaning of our title.

Conventions used in my media piece

• First of all, there were many different conventions used in my film, for example, there are counter-types about the female character as she is the one who walks away with all of the money and kills the male character. There is also a stereotype about how the male character would be the one who would be getting angry.

Uses of media my group and I are comparing our

production to.• Film wise we thought of:

• the opening of The Dark Knight• The Italian Job • Colombiana

• In TV we looked at:• Justified• Buffy The Vampire Slayer

• When we looked through video games we found:• Payday 2• Battlefield Hardline

What is Colombiana about?

• Colombiana is a French action movie which is based on a female character who witnesses her parents death and is trying to get her revenge. She is seen as a ‘Bad-Ass’ assassin who is lethal and uses every means in her disposal to for fill her vengeance. This film seems to have done very well with the budget being around £24,000,000 and making a box office of around £42,000,000, giving them a sufficient profit of £18,000,000, sufficient enough that they are looking into a sequel. The trailer to the film is:

What is Payday 2 about?

• Payday 2 is a first-person shooter video game about a gang of thirteen members and the player is one of the thirteen in the gang and goes on a bank heist alone, with a friend (Co-op) or with the computer (AI). These games (Payday 1 + 2) are both mainly about the idea of a bank heist.

Similarities with Colombiana and Payday 2 to my media

product • In this shot we can see that the female character goes against the stereotype that females wouldn't be the one who would be holding the gun and how they would be innocent and not as powerful as them male character. We can see that the camera is looking up at the female character showing that she is dominant and powerful in the scene.

• This shot is from the video-game “Payday 2” gameplay and is similar to my media product as it shows that money is the centre of all greed and power as everyone seems to want it for themselves. In both of these shots money is in the centre which means that both uses of media have a similar idea about it.

• This shot is also from the video-game “Payday 2” gameplay and it shows that the character is wearing a mask to hide his face making his character mysterious and wanting the audience (players) to find out what he looks like and what he is hiding. This is similar to the media use in my product as in mine the characters are both wearing balaclavas making the audience feel as if they are hiding something (especially the female character hiding her gender until the end of the opening sequence).

What is The Dark Knight about?• The Dark Knight is a sequel

to the Batman trilogy. This is the second of the three and is about Batman, James Cordon and Harvey Dent foreign an alliance to defend and fight the crime in Gotham city and the Joker. The Batman was training throughout the first of the three films and turned into Batman near the end. This film is predominantly about the Joker, Heath Ledger, and the relationship that Batman and him share.

Similarities to the opening sequence in The

Dark Knight• In this shot, from The Dark Knight, we can see one of the characters take all of the money for themselves showing the greed and the influence money has on the characters. This is a similarity to my opening sequence as the idea of money causes both the characters to become selfish and ravenous for all of the money.

• This shot, from The Dark Knight, shows a similarity between my media product and this sequence. As in this shot we see the greed that the money is causing just like in my opening media piece. We also look up at the character holding the gun, in both shots, to show the power each of them have.

• In this shot we can see that we are looking up at the mysterious character who is wearing a mask to cover up his/her face. This is similar to my shot on the right as in my shot there the audience is also looking up at the character wondering about their mentality and their reason of their importance to the sequence.
