Evaluation Question 1How did you USE, DEVELOP and
CHALLENGE soap codes and conventions of real media products?
Forms and Conventions of a soapMultiple main characters (more than one
storyline at a time)Set in one place. E.g.-Coronation Street set in
ManchesterMain location for all characters to come together.
E.g.- Rovers Return in Coronation StreetDrama/conflict in each episodeRealistic make up and clothes4th wall cameraFilters on cameras to add effect of
day/evening/night
Research For my soap, I needed to look at other soaps
for conventions to both use and challenge. I looked at social realism soaps such as Coronation Street and Hollyoaks.
Hollyoaks Trailer Analysis
I looked at camera shots, mise en scene, sound and editing
How did you USE codes and conventions of real media products?Camera:
Over the shoulder shot, reverse angle
Camera:
Close up
Camera
Establishing shot with characters in the background
MusicFor my trailer, I used my song called “Hear
Them Calling” because the beat has a dark tone and is at the right speed to help with editing. The lyrics also match the trailer as someone is having an affair and received a text blackmailing her to which the lyrics say “I hear them calling me” and also between the 2 men she is with “Its like I have an angel and devil on each shoulder”
How did you CHALLENGE codes and conventions of real media products?
The character on the right is part of the other persons mind, he isn’t real and acts as a devil on her shoulder. Normally for someone's inner thoughts in a soap the convention is to have a non diegetic monologue and show the characters face, I challenged that convention by having a literal being there to provide those thoughts of conflict within her mind.
How did my ancillaries USE, DEVELOP and CHALLENGE codes and conventions of real media products?
Magazine front cover
I used similar photography to “TV & Satellite Week”, the strap line, the box of images (middle) and a plain colour background (right).
Magazine front cover
I developed by changing the layout of the headline by putting the date and website above it.
Magazine front cover
I didn’t challenge the conventions.
Billboard
I used the E4 logo and branding, as well as the 3 people in the image.
Billboard
I developed by having a location background as opposed to just a plain background.
Billboard
I challenged by only having one row of purple tape instead of 2.
