KEVIN NTUEBA

My Trailer conforms with the conventions of its genre which is Horror and forms that are used in existing Horror trailers, although there are a few that I have taken from elsewhere and developed in my own work. These are the ways in which I both followed some of the Horror movie conventions and deviated from them.

CAMERA SHOTS

Camera ShotsIn term of the camera shots that I used, I followed the conventions in Horror movies which consist of, an establishing shot, which sets out the location/ setting of the film. Another camera shot I followed was close ups and extreme close ups which create a sense of tension. The masks and the faces of the victims are often displayed in close ups, In a mirror or an extreme close up. In my Secondary Research (image top right) I found that the colours worn by the perpetrator was often dark and the disguise worked well in concealing their identity.

PRODUCTION COMPANY AND DIRECTORS

Production Company I followed the convention in the horror movie trailers which displayed their film production companies (name and logo), I created two of my own using iMovie. The directors of the movie are also shown. Below are examples of how they were used in the three horror movies I am using in this presentation for demonstration purposes. In my film I was called the ‘ Metro-Hoffman-Mayer Pictures and The Documentary Film Partners’. Below (on the right) is an image from a presentation I did on the conventions of a film trailer, it included Film Production Companies and their Logos. There are a few more examples of Production Companies taken from the trailers I analysed Lionsgate,Twisted Pictures (The Collection and Saw) and IFC Films (The Human Centipede 2).

RELEASE DATERelease DateThe release date was shown in the Horror movie trailers I had analysed, which tell the audience when to expect the film, I followed this convention, below are some examples of how the trailers I looked at displayed their release dates.

In my Secondary Research of film trailer conventions I found that the release date is displayed on the trailer, informing the audience of when the film is set to be released.

SETTING/LOCATIONSetting/LocationIn the Horror movie trailers I looked at I noticed that although we are introduced to a room or building, as the audience we are not given the specifics on where the movie is taking place. I am deviating from this convention because I think that my trailer would work better with the audience being aware of where it is set.

In my Secondary Research which is displayed earlier in my blog page (image on the right) I found that the setting for Horror movies consisted of Graveyards.

LIGHTINGLighting

In the Horror movie trailers I looked at I noticed that although lighting was used to convey a dark/sinister mood to the film. Darker lighting is commonly used to build up suspense. The use of lighting denotes that something bad is going to happen.

COSTUMES/PROPS

When conducting my secondary research on Horror movie conventions I found that the characters types consisted of a villain/serial killer and law enforcement.

SOUND AND EDITING

Sound and EditingIn the Horror movie trailers I looked at there are high pitched screams, mechanical sounds (grinding metal or bone). Eerie sounding music and sound effects such as footsteps, doors creaking. To some extent I used some of these conventions.
