What have you learned from the audience

feedback?

Q1 Do you feel the music corresponded well with the lyrics

in telling the narrative• Every member of our

target audience who took part in the survey answered yes. This was a positive start as ultimately it told us that the audience understood the narrative and the codes and conventions were adhering to. Also that our choice of music corresponded well and was synchronised with the lyrics.

Codes and Conventions of a

love story

Q2 Did you understand and feel the emotion of separation and loneliness that both characters

were trying to convey?

• Again, all questionnaires answered yes. This fundamentally means that we have achieved our aim and the audience felt and understood those codes and conventions of a traditional happy ending love story. We felt it was very important that the audience felt these emotions and understood the conventions we were trying to convey.

Q3 Was the beat of the music in time with the fades and effects

between shots to distinguish the right pace and timings?

• This was an interesting question and from evaluating the survey’s it’s clear that the majority of the scenes that the synchronisation wasn’t 100% all of the time. Several survey’s mention that to improve we could have slowed the fades down to show the transition between the two characters. Timing is crucial in this video, especially when showing continuity and expressing the codes and conventions.

Problems with synchronisation whilst editing

Q4 Do you feel that the lighting, effects and the clips showed

strong continuation?• Similarly to the previous question, the

continuity with the lighting, effects and clips are crucial in conveying the codes and conventions we chose to. All survey’s show the audience thought the continuity was accurate and consistent which is very pleasing.

Q5 Towards the end of the video, do you feel the pathetic fallacy created by the

rain creates the mood of romance within a traditional style love story with the

two finding each other again?• The majority of the audience believe the rain

does emphasise the feeling of romance and traditional convention of the two finding each other and a happy ending. However a few felt that the rain somewhat created a dull atmosphere in what should have been a bright, happier setting. Therefore a few people felt the pathetic fallacy had the opposite effect yet most found it to be positive.

Use of pathetic fallacy

Q6 Does the narrative convey those traditional codes and

conventions of a happy ending romance story?

• This question almost casts aside all the techniques we implemented to the video, and simply focuses on the story behind the video. All survey’s came back as yes which is positive because achieving those codes and conventions was our main intention. The audience felt they could relate to stereotypical storyline used in previous videos and it showed similar characteristics and styles to those used previously.

Q7 Were there enough effects and transitions in cooperated to the video and do they have a positive effect in conveying the codes and conventions

of a love story g • The majority of the survey’s express that we used

effects and transitions well and they had a positive effect, yet to develop this further we could have in cooperated a wider variation of transitions. In particular more fades to show the transition between the two characters and the

effect their separation is having on both of them.

Use of different effects and transitions

Q8 Did the settings used; lake, field, woods and bedroom befit

the narrative well?• The audience feel that

the settings used were well picked and certainly belied the story well. However, the majority feel the bedroom setting was slightly weak and often hindered the codes and conventions that were being expressed. I would agree with the audience that it was the weakest of the four settings.

setting used

Q9 Were the actors convincing in portraying the codes and

conventions?

• Essentially this is one of the more important questions because having strong actors, as well all other aspects, for us was absolutely crucial. Without strong actors we would have struggled immensely to express the codes and conventions and for the audience to think they were strong and ‘believable’ is excellent news.

Q10 Did the video flow and make sense like a typical narrative

based music video?

• The feeling across the whole was that they understood it was primarily a narrative based video, and there was a story being told. A few survey’s mentioned that it was a story they became engrossed in and was very clear that it was a typical fairytale love story.

Relating present survey to initial results

13

• From evaluating the initial surveys taken back in October to see which elements of a music video our target audience preferred, we can now relate those which our post-production surveys.

• This will allow us to see which ideas of our initial surveys we managed to put in to the product, and which ideas were changed and or adapted slightly.

• From comparing the two, it’s clear that we had to adapt several initial ideas to suit the codes and conventions of the video, whilst trying to balance those with the likes of the audience.

13

14

Did the video flow and make sense like a typical narrative

based music video?• In the initial survey the results showed that the

majority preferred a mixed based video, with elements of; narrative, performance and concept.

• Therefore, even though the product is mainly a narrative based one, we tried to implement elements of a performance. Such as Lucy sometimes being the main focus and showing her singing.

14

15

Does fashion/mise en scene make a video or contribute?

• It became clear through the initial survey that around half of the audience thinks it makes the video, and the other half feel it’s a contribution.

• We therefore felt that elements such as, clothing, colours, choice of props etc were very important, especially when expressing the cods and conventions. For example, dark colours wouldn’t have been a positive connotation of the character Lucy was portraying.

Feedback online

• We felt that as well as holding an audience feedback and viewing session, it would be effective to post the video on to Facebook and Youtube with the link to our blog so people could comment.

• The comments showed a both positive aspects to the video which is good to be objective

17

18

• Those are just a few examples of ideas that we implemented and or developed within the video based on audience feedback.

• We have certainly learned a lot through audience feedback and in particular the importance of both a pre and post-production survey. This allows you to see how successful you were in balancing certain codes, conventions and elements to suit the buyer.

• It’s important to stick to the initial ideas as much as possible but fundamentally you have to cater for your target audience. Therefore surveys and viewings are crucially important.
