My Magazine Billboard

My front cover and the Billboard magazine front cover share a lot of the same features such as masthead, cover lines, main image, slogan and barcode. Billboard has also used a limited colour palate on their front cover which consists of purple, grey, black and white.

Masthead- For the masthead of my magazine I used the font ‘Rockwell Extra Bold’. My masthead follows the codes and conventions of existing magazines. For example, it could be compared to NME because both magazines use a short masthead with a slogan below it. Also, NME’s masthead uses a stroke effect like the stroke used on my masthead which helps it to stand out against the background colour.

People- The main artist on my cover follows the codes and conventions of a mainstream pop magazine as there is one single striking image. Nick Logan who was the editor brought the single striking image to the industry and I have used one because they are proven to be effective. Existing magazines such as Billboard have used this same approach to make the artist stand out

on the page. Unlike magazines such as Smash Hits, who have used multiple artists on their front cover, I have chosen to only use one artist on my front cover so the cover does not look too crowded.

My contents page and Billboard’s contents page have many similarities such as both our logos have been presented clearly and the heading is clearly seen on the page.

Editorial- Unlike existing magazines such as NME and Smash Hits I have not included an editorial in my contents page but magazines such as Billboard have not done this either.

Chart Update- Like Billboard I have included this week’s top 20 singles chart in my contents page. I have done this because my magazine is a mainstream pop magazine so the audience would want to know about who is number 1 and the newest singles this week.

Images- Like Billboard and Smash Hits, I have used more than one image on my contents page and put the name of the artist in the corner of the image. I have coordinated the colour of the box containing the artists’ name with the relevant box with the article page

Rule of thirds- All three existing magazines and my magazines all use the rule of thirds to structure their contents pages.
