Music Video Research

We looked at Smashing Pumpkins – Disarm for inspiration of green screen use.

The conventions used in this video are very common in the alternative genre.

PropsThis prop used in RHCP – Give it away has a good effect when played in reverse adding to the conventions of non-linear

Page 6: Evaluation of a2 media project1

In our video we have not challenged conventions so that our video was as conventional as possible for the alternative rock genre videos

Alternative Rock genre has vague conventions so if we strayed from them too much it wouldn’t have the feel of an alternative video

Q2)How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts? The album cover doesn’t have a set meaning or

purpose. When researching existing album covers I found

that most of the covers from bands such as; Radiohead, Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Smashing Pumpkins. The examples shown to challenge convention in the sense that the album cover doesn’t tend to relate to the band.

The main feature that is generally consistent throughout the majority of album covers in the rock genre is either the bands name, the title of the album if it has been heavily publicised (instant name recognition) or a band member on the front if they are a well known or iconic figure .

What we can do next timeWe can continue to edit it the same way, maybe try

some different effects to play with the colour, time, editing between shots.

We need to make sure that our original footage is in sync with the music to avoid having to do any extra editing

Next time we could consider making a video with a narrative

We can experiment with different lighting effects to create a different mood

We can try to use less green screen and find good locations to film which will help cut down on editing
