Evaluation- In what ways does your media product use, develop or

challenge forms and convention of real media products?

(Sonia De Abreu)

To help me answer this question I have analysed part of the movie fish tank directed by Andrea Arnold in 2009.

Analysis of fish tankIn this Drama movie of fish tank which is a movie similar to ours there is a lot of natural lighting. Similarly in our movie lots of natural light is present. As well as this when the character of Jade is walking up the ally the area looks quite rough similarly here as it is set in an estate it looks more lower class and ‘chavvy’.

Clip 2 A lot of close ups are used in fish tank. Here the focal point is on the protagonist. The rule of third is also being used and the view is the city is blurred out highlighting her importance. We incorporated this in our opening sequence by making the focal point clear.

Clip 3In our opening sequence we establish the whole thing with a shot of me applying my makeup. This is simply what teenage girls love doing; they love their makeup. By using this in our opening sequence it adds to the realism of the character.

Clip 4The costume used by the character is quite similar to the one we used in ours. The hoops and the hair up look was incorporated by us to depict a ‘chavvy’ character. Within our opening sequence we tried to make it look as close to real as possible which I believe in terms of the miseen scene we succeeded in.

Clip 5 The whole miseen scene of this clip shows poverty and the characters financial status. Everything is in poor condition and there is smoke on the bottom left of the door. As well as this one of the characters is walking round in simply a top and knickers showing a lack of respect.

Relating back to the questionEvaluation- In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge

forms and convention of real media products?

I think that after analysing these clips our opening sequence uses many forms and conventions of real media products. Many close ups are used, over the shoulder shots. The dialect of the character the setting and location. The costume, the actresses and in general the characters used are all similar to the ones in fish tank. The only thing that I would say that is noticeably different is ‘Jades’ bedroom because I would say its more girly than the one used in fish tank, yet this was done on purpose to exemplify the idea that you don’t have to be of a particular stereotype for your life to go downhill. We wanted to show that you don’t have to be of a low status, have financial issues, come from a rough background, estate for example to be an asbo teenager. We wanted to basically illustrate that you should never judge a book by its cover.
