Magazine AdvertMy Magazine advert contained many features that are typically see in most magazine adverts promoting a new album:

I used the same font for the band’s name on the magazine and digipak, making it easily distinguishable for the viewer by creating a personal house style. This is a typical convention seen in all types of genre music magazine adverts from bands such as Noah and the Whale and Coco and the Butterfields.

I also layered the title of the album underneath the band’s name, following the conventions of these folk bands.

I added two reviews with star ratings from The Guardian and Q Magazine, taking inspiration from Noah and the Whale’s advert for their album titled The First Days of Spring. This is a typical convention of magazine adverts as it is further attracting the consumer’s attention and selling the album.

Including when the album is out is an important aspect of the magazine advert, as it allows the consumer to know when they are able to purchase the album. I positioned this feature at the bottom of the page, taking inspiration from Noah and the Whale’s advert for Last Night on Earth.

Although I kept the same house style through the font of my magazine advert, I challenged the typical conventions of magazine adverts and used a different image on the advert to the digipak, unlike artists such as Ben Howard. However, Mumford and Sons also challenge this convention in their advert for Sign No More, as the image of the digipak is completely different to that on the magazine advert.

DigipakI used a minimal amount of text on my digipak as this is a common convention of most album covers, as seen on Mumford and Sons’ Sigh No More.

I included the actors playing the band members on the front cover of my digipak taking inspiration from Noah and the Whale and layered an image of tall grass over the top. This is challenging the conventions of typical digipaks which use just one main image.

For the inside panels, I used a simple picture of tall grass which relates to the folk genre. I included a thank you message, which is commonly seen inside many digipaks such as Laura Marling’s album Alas I Cannot Swim.

I used another tall grass image on the back of the digipak to keep a constant style throughout. Taking inspiration from Laura Marling’s album, I positioned the text on the left third of the page. As album’s typically contain 10-15 songs, I listed 10 songs on the back of my own album.
