Preliminary Task • Looking back at my preliminary task, I feel that we didn’t do as well as we could have done

and if we were to re-film our preliminary again, it would be much better and the three rules ‘180 degree rule, match on action and shot reverse shot’ would be shown a lot more clearly.I do feel that some parts of our preliminary task were successful such as the digital technology however there were also many parts that were not successful such as the movement and handling of the camera.

• However I do feel I have learnt a lot about the different camera angles and movements and editing techniques during the preliminary task. When completing the preliminary task I didn’t have as much knowledge of the camera, camera angles and editing techniques but when going along and filming our preliminary task I learnt a lot more about these things.

Close-Up Shots

These are close up shots that I have taken from our preliminary task and our film ‘Unknown’. Close up shots denotes facial expressions and emotions and reactions, they are often used in programes and films to show a characters reaction or feelings & emotions. The close-up shot of the girl on the left denotes she is having a conversation with someone and it connotes that she seems to be having serious business like conversation and is listening to the other person talking.

Over the shoulder shot

These shots show an over the shoulder shot. As you can see the over the should shot in the first image is from our preliminary task and it isn’t really a good over the shoulder shot as the one on the right from our film unknown.Over the shoulder shot denotes the character and you can see what they are doing or looking at. The image on the left connotes a girl being interviewed by an interviewer and she seems very pleased what she is hearing from the interviewee. The image on the left connotes a hooded person sending a text to someone.

180 degree shot

This is a 180 degree shot from our preliminary task, this is one of the shots that I didn’t think went too well and if we were to re-film again then this shot would be filmed a lot more clearly. This shot denotes two females in a room having a conversation, it connotes that they are in the process of an interview.I think these were one of the shots that were least successful because the camera was constantly moving and the quality did not seem that great.

Shot reverse shot

Shot reverse shot is when it shows one character looking/talking to the the other character and then shows the other character looking/talking back to the first character. We used this shot in our preliminary task but I don’t think we used it very well. When filming, the movement of the camera was not still and it kept moving, when it come to editing, I felt we should have used more effects to emerge the shots together. I also felt that we should have filmed the shots many different times to get a really good shot and then used final cut pro to edit.

Match on Action

Match on action is matching two objects/compositions to graphically match , it is oftenused to establish continuity of action. These match on action shots are from our thriller opening unknown. It has a matchshot of the girl walking out the door and then matches it with her walking out onto thestreet after leaving her house. This shows that this is a continuous shot as the shotcontinues on from her leaving the house.

• Overall what was successful about our preliminary task is that the filming of the task was successful, we made sure that the camera was set up properly and we tried to include as many different camera angles as possible.

• The things that were less successful about our preliminary tasks are that not all the rules are clearly visible due to the lack of knowledge of different camera angles and movement. We didn’t shoot the angles lots of times like we should have done so that we would have a variety of different camera angles when editing. Also we did not do much research and planning. Which we should have also done as this would have been helpful and may helped us to improve our task.

• I improved upon each of these areas when making my thriller opening by filming lots of different camera angles so that we could get really good shots, we also made sure that we had high key lighting so that the clip was not grainy and dark and we made sure we needed to know everything about our camera we booked out by asking our technician what specific parts of the camera does.
