Evaluation Question 1: In what ways does your media

product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions

of real media products?

TitlesThe inter titles in any short film or trailer can really show the audience what style of film or genre it is. I have included a screen shot of the titles to the short animation ‘The Owl’ which is shown on the BBC.

The style of inter titles within this is very similar to that of which I used in my animation. Both are in a very loose, almost hand written style which works well with the way the animation has been produced. The inter titles in the short ‘The Owl’ are also placed at the beginning of the film which is a conventional feature, which I have also used. I believe that the context in which I have included my inter titles also challenges the conventions of short animated films. This is because a lot of the examples which I have looked at only include them on one screen just before the story starts whereas in my film, they appear during the opening sequence every few seconds, which then leads up to the main title before the film starts.

StyleI believe that this is an area which I have really challenged during the making of my short animated film. Due to the rise in technology quality, the style of animation has changed dramatically over the past few years. Most animations that are seen on the television these days are created using high-tech computer software creating realistic 3D images, whereas before they used to be completed entirely by hand. As I did not have the relevant high-tech equipment to produce and animation, I referred back to the classic style and drew mine out by hand. I think that this was a big risk in itself due to the fact that I had no experience or knowledge of animation and the style is no longer very often/if at all viewed by the younger generation any more. After carrying out my questionnaire at the end of my project, I found that a lot of the adults I asked mentioned that it reminded them of Roobarb and Custard a program some would have watched when they were children. I did focus on trying to create a style similar to that of Roobarb and Custard but with a more modern twist and a less ‘loose’ style. I think that I managed to achieve this as all of the children that I showed it too said that they really enjoyed it and wanted to see it again!

Shot typesThe type of shot used within any short film or TV program is very important in displaying the characters/ location in the most suitable way. I found that a lot of cartoons/ animations aimed at the younger audience have a lot of close ups and long shots of the characters as these are the most appropriate to show the characters well. I have used a number of close up shots within my animation to really show the characters emotion which also helps to show their characteristics. This is a conventional feature which I have stuck to. I have also used the conventions of using 2 shots to show the relationships between characters and also long/ establishing shots to show the viewer where the film is set.

Genre and Elements The content of any film is very important as it is what appeals to their audience. There is no point having a children's film which is really serious as they will soon lose interest as it is not appropriate. For this reason I decided to use lots of comic elements. This is very conventional of any program or film aimed at the younger audience as it is what appeals to them. To make my animation feature some realistic elements I included some aspects carried out by the dog that could and have happened in real life. For example I have seen dogs run into glass doors many times which is amusing to all generations, and also the dog trying to fit though the cat flap. I think the elements which I have used within my film are in a way conventional as they are very comical, however I also believe that it also challenges the conventions in the fact that some of the elements are based on reality rather than completely make believe which can become quite extreme.

End creditsThe style in which I produced my end credits I believe is relatively unconventional. Many credits nowadays just crawl up the screen from top to bottom, however I want to make mine different. I found a style which I really liked on YouTube where an image is displayed along with a short selection of credits. The image would then change and more credits will appeal. I think is more effective than the conventional way as children are more likely to pay attention to the credits as they will be drawn to the images.
