Style/colours and fontsMy front cover was inspired by ‘Kerrang’ as well as ‘NME’ and

it was evident by my choice of colour scheme (red, black, white and yellow). I did this because of the identification of my target audience. Before I started my media product, I marketed my audience and these target audiences are ideally ‘in to rock’ or anything similar or relevant genre. I deliberately made the style of my front cover simple however dominated by huge sub-headings because I aimed to easily attract and engage my audience. I tried to produce a magazine that can easily make potential readers spot my magazine’s main topic which may attract and engage them. For that reason, I deliberately made my magazine’s headlines big and contrasting its background layer so that it will stands out visually. My front cover contained mainly just about bands, music, charts, gigs and exclusive interview – mainly just music and artists. This is because my objective was to achieve what my ideal readers would like to see. No extras but just music. The style of my cover may be funky due to Kerrang and NME’s influence, however, I made sure that the simplicity and classiness of the cover is evident on my cover. I kept this in mind because my magazine’s genre is mainly indie (although it may contain indie rock or pop). I kept the colour of white background to make it ‘safe’ and achieve a wider audience. Moreover, it is more conventional than using other specific colours like Pink or other secondary colours.

Contents pageMy contents page dominantly contained elements

of Kerrang in terms of the style (editor section, main photographs, style, fonts and borders – layout). However, I used the idea of NME’s band index because I wanted to provide my potential readers a broader variety of bands. This may appeal to them due to the numbers of bands that they could check out. It allows them to have a wider options to check out which may make them think “This magazine may be worth the money since there is a lot to check out”. My magazine do not limit the readers with one or two bands but more. I kept the fonts bold and strong because I wanted to attract the same people that the magazine of NME and Kerrang attracts. In my opinion, the use of this font style is also relevant to my magazine’s genre and it is conventional. It is professional and what the common font that music magazines use. It is the kind of font that people are used to. If I used a different font, it may only target a niche audience.

Representation and addressing my audience

My media product’s genre is indie which may also contain elements of rock or sometimes indie pop. Within this genre, it expands my target audience which I have addressed through my magazine’s mise-en-sene by identifying my stereotypical readers. I represented and addressed these readers by choosing a conventional layout and design of a rock magazine which is why I chose NME and Kerrang to be my magazine’s main inspiration. NME and Kerrang readers may stereotypically be the type of person who listens to bands (eg: Alesana, Black Sabbath, You me at Six etc) or sometimes, bands that may be more mellow however not artists like ‘James Brown’. They may also be the one who plays instruments or go to gigs and bands or wear grungy t-shirts. By identifying and targeting these type of readers, I created my media product based on their interests and likes. Therefore, my music magazine may appeal to them as it shows elements of funk/punk, rock (Kerrang’s layout and NME’s fonts) and also used photographs that may remind them of their favourite bands or something similar. I also did not limit my magazine’s gender which is why I used neutral colour scheme. I also used bands that are originated from England since my target audience are mainly English/British.
