Evaluating Heat Pump EfficiencyPowerWise Systems is undertaking a state-funded study to evaluate the efficiency of heat pumps. In this presentation, we will explain the monitoring configurations for different heat pumps, how to ensure consistent data streams, how to use wireless communications to simplify installation, and how to calculate energy efficiency ratio and coefficient of performance.

Conclusions & what have we learned
• COP Coefficient Of Performance• COP = (The change in the heat level of an area) / (The
energy consumed) • Heat-Pumps are expected to have GOP values of 3-4 as
opposed to a COP of 1 for a conventional electrical resistance.
• In general heat-pump are meeting the specs 85-95%• Correct installation is key – we did see a few system that was
not pressurized correctly.• Common sense temperature set points and use • Heat-Pump technology has improved the last 5 years • Still makes sense –even with the low oil/gas prices

Installations - What Experience Has Taught Us
• Online survey to gather basic info• Site visits are helpful:
• Locations of equipment• Pipe material and dimensions• Network access• Can we install monitoring equipment?• Participant concerns• Ability to isolate the heat pump, in case other
systems are installed
