OUR FILM

The plot of our film is that after her husband is kidnapped by Sergei, Piper (who is a secret agent) uses

her intellect and experience to get revenge and save the day, all without leaving her house. It is a film that

reverses gender stereotypes by having a strong female heroic lead role. It is a thriller/action thriller and so we would want to employ institutions that reflect this and

have distributed successful films of the action genre before. It will be an independent film rather than

mainstream with a lower budget.

OUR IDEAL CASTOur ideal cast would be…• Jason Statham for Sergei because he fits the strong, masculine aesthetic and is known for his work in many other thrillers, including Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Revolver.

•We would want Rory Kinnear for the character of John because he fits the innocent, square ‘accountant’ look we want for John as this will emphasise the difference in status and power between him and Sergei.

•Piper would be played by Natalie Portman because she has starred in various thrillers before, such as Leon: The Professional and V for Vendetta. She usually plays strong lead roles which suits the part of Piper.

OUR IDEAL INSTITUTION AND WHY?

•Since the Taken franchise was a large inspiration for our thriller, in an ideal world and if we had an unlimited budget we would want our film to be distributed by 20th Century Fox because they were the main distributor for Taken.

ABOUT 20TH CENTURY FOX•They are a prestigious studio, known as one of the ‘Big Six’ - the most successful Hollywood film studios. It was founded in 1935 by William Fox and Joseph M. Schenck. They are owned by parent company, Fox Entertainment Group.

•It’s highest grossing films include Avatar, Titanic, the Star Wars franchise and Independence Day. Whilst these are all films that they produced, they have also distributed various successful movies, for example Kingsman, the Ice Age franchise, Deadpool, Gone Girl, The Mazerunner, The Avatar Franchise, and many more.

THE ACTUAL DISTRIBUTOR

Based on what we actually made, I would want Icon Distributors to distribute

our film.

HISTORY OF THE INSTITUTION

• Icon Films Distribution is a British company• It was formed in 1999. • One of the UK’s leading independent film distributors • They have distributed both mainstream hits and

indie films

WHAT OTHER FILMS HAVE THEY MADE/DISTRIBUTED?

The majority of the films that Icon produce or distribute are of the thriller/horror/mystery

genre, including…•The Unfolding•The Forest•The Ones Below•Cold in July•The Resident

Page 8: Eval q 3 updated

Do they specialise in a genre?

• From my research I discovered that Icon Films mainly distribute films of the thriller/action/horror/mystery genres

Page 9: Eval q 3 updated

I believe that they would distribute our media product because the majority of the films that they have distributed in the past were of the thriller or horror genre, and our film is a thriller. Also, they are not an especially large company and so would be more willing to distribute a low budget film like ours than Lionsgate or 20th Century Fox. They have also been known to distribute directorial debuts and independent films which are not necessarily commercially orientated.

Page 10: Eval q 3 updated

Our film fits with the ethos of Icon because they have hired first time directors before – for example they produced Tom Ford’s directorial debut, A Single Man - and many of their films are of a lower budget, including The Unfolding and Man on Wire which had a budget of £1 million.

ICON films employed a low budget yet extremely successful tactic for marketing their film Paranormal Activity They let the consumers have their own hand in distributing the film by going on the film’s website and clicking the ‘Demand IT’ button which led you to a site where you were able to vote for the film to be exhibited in your city. You can also see how many people voted for the film to come to their city. I think it would be a good idea to use this ploy for marketing our film as well since it does not require a lot of money or resources.
