10Scary MadridMadrid isnt a particularly spooky place, buthere are ve strange phenomena which seemto appear around the month of October.

The metro is taken over by uglypeople, especially on line 5

This month, the lmstar looks and pearly-whitesmiles of the tanned Adonises and Aphroditesso prominent in the metro during the summermonths begin to vanish. From mid-October tomid-May, you will notice your fellow metro pas-sengers have an ever-increasing resemblanceto Quasimodo. Their numbers are greatestbefore 9am (it is believed that some feardaylight), so those of us with the ill fortune ofhaving to ride the early morning metro will berubbing shoulders and hunchbacks with themon a daily basis. The cause is a mystery, butconsole yourself that there are worse horrorson the Cercanias trains.

Being infected with Swine Flu thiswinter is a nigh inevitabilityAside from the general displeasure of cominginto close contact with the afore-mentionedEsmeralda-chasing ex-inhabitants of NotreDame, the dirty old Swine Flu has gone pan-

demic and is as contagious as the viruses in allthe zombie movies of recent times. However, avoiding the metro wont spare you Spanishnotions of personal space will see to that. And even though Spanish Health MinisterTrini Jimnez has ordered us all to sneeze intoour armpits and to forgo greeting kisses, theSpanish habit of standing very close to people(compared to the distance most foreignersare accustomed to) will ensure transmissionof the bug.To demonstrate this, a study has shown thata group of eight Spanish friends who enteran empty bar of 100m2 will quickly arrangethemselves so as to occupy a total surfacearea of less than 2m2. If youre close enoughto feel someones breath, youre closeenough to eat their germs.

All women over 50 have short hairThe sight of a middle-aged to elderly woman

is not frightening in itself, granted. But whenyou come to realize that all the countryswomen beyond a certain age have short hair, there must be something going on. Rumoursabound of a machine in the back room ofevery hairdressers which processes every oneof them. And a mind-controlling chip in theirnecks compels them to return each time theirhair grows beyond a certain length.

You cant say no to a night outYou begin to nd it impossible to decline aninvitation for drinks and dancing, regardlessof the overdue assignments you have foruniversity or tomorrows early start at work. This suppression of your willpower usuallycontinues until aer Christmas, though forsome guiris, it becomes a terminal state.

You wake up at the other end of yourmetro line

Maybe this is just me, but you mysteriously slipinto unconsciousness as you travel home onthe rst metro of the morning aer having lea nightclub some time before six. You awaken, feeling sub-human and as if there were somestrange hunching beginning to aect yourback, only when a short-haired old womansneezes in your face. A shower and a changeof clothes doesnt appear to rectify yourdishevelled appearance, but you shue backonto the metro in the direction of your work.Oh, whats that? A sneeze? Must be an allergyor something.

    Dont have nightmares!Lu

Halloween. Its that magicaltime of year where houses

get battered in egg, children get encouraged todress like superheroes orprincesses and go bangingdown doors in search ofstrangers with candy, andthe twenty-somethingsof the modern world gostorming into thri shopsacross the map, lootingand pillaging the shelvesand racks like Spaniards ontrash day.

And although Halloween hasntbecome so mainstream here as backhome, it is at least starting to catchon with the younger generation ofSpaniards, so get on board.

So, what to do on this night of nightsin a city with an uncountable numberof bars and clubs? The possibilities areendless, I know. But to keep things easy, lets start from the beginning and laydown the foundation for a successfulevening. Costumes. Anything goes, ofcourse, but the dierence between agood night and a night youll still betalking about to your kids friends, isyour costume. The more your characteris cleverly portrayed and/or easilyrecognizable, the more Spaniardsyou can startle on that 6am Sundaymetro ride home. And who doesnt lovestartling Spaniards? But seriously, ifyou nd yourself in a pinch for an idea,

just head down to your nearest bazaar

(maybe aer a couple cocktails?)and see what types of treasures youcan nd buried in the clutter. Justplease, dont commit the cardinalsin of coming as yourself. Hey, whatother night of the year can you goout dressed like John Rambo and taketequila shots with Big Bird? And whoknows? Maybe the Halloween scoersand virgins out there will see howmuch fun youre having and decide toparticipate next year.

Okay, okay, weve got the costumesnailed now, so what next? Well, ifwere to take the city by force thanit must be strategized like a wellplanned attack. First o, get an earlystart. Think pre-game time around10ish, with location being the closestat you can nd to the city centre.Walking will be the preferred mode oftransportation tonight, so think twicebefore you go half-toga. It is, aer all, nearly November.

    From the pre-party its recommended

that you do one of two things, butpreferably both. Were on to the

bar-hopping now, and its probablyearly enough still to catch somedrink specials. My rst thought righto the bat, is to nd yourself a barwith minis. The Little John in theNottingham of Spanish drink sizes, asolid litre of the golden bubbly shouldbe just the kick in the pants you mayneed to get into the proper spirit, ifyou arent already.

For stop #2, peek in to your nearestneighbourhood sidreria for a few ciderpumps a round of Halloween toasting. And while youre at it, why not eventry your hand at the overhead pour? This, while aggravating the hell outof all the employees and frighteningthe locals, will at least provide

entertainment for your group whilesimultaneously testing your levelof sobriety, upon which your nextsequence of decisions will depend.Do make sure to pour over a bucketthough, to keep it respectable.

That being said, why not put an endto the pussyfooting and tighten upthat drinkin belt? Its time for someshots and chino beers. Make yourway over to the Chupito Sabor nowand kick back a few face twistersbefore roaming through Malasaaen route to Sol. Of course, on theway, purchase one or two of thosemysteriously frosty chino beers forthe walk. This, I guess you could say, would be the half time break. Please

do try though, to prevent your ninjafriend from round-housing every binin sight along the way.

Alright, so by this point, youll havegot the ol one eyed squint goin onto keep the vision singular, and willbe as primed as ever to hit someIrish pubs where youll be wooing thecrowd with your cleverly constructedcostume in hopes of winning free bartabs or bottles. Free alcohol right nowmight not be the best solution, but isfree booze ever a bad thing?

Now with time winding down, letsdo a little lap (just for the hell ofit) around Plaza Santa Ana beforemaking your way along Gran Va andCalle Princesa to end the night atcostume contest #2 in Orange Caf.All in all a tall order for such a shortnight, I know, but many only get oneshot at a Halloween out in Madrid dont you want to look back and sayyou did your part to spread the spirit?

n a musical universe with innite stars,no two in the Latin music galaxy shinebrighter than Paulina Rubio and Shakira. With combined record sales in the range

of 100 million, these pop divas have as muchpull as any artists in the world today. Both

beautiful and talented, the supernovas theycall careers exploded around the same time, making it an all but irresistible temptation notto compare them. But while they share a nativetongue and great success, not everything abouttheir careers has run parallel.

Born in Barranquilla, Colombia, theprecocious Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripollbegan writing songs before the age of ten.Her rst album, Maga, was recorded whenShakira was only 13 years old. Maga, andher second album, Peligro, though known inColombia, were commercial failures, whichthe artist attributed to poor production. Aera respite from recording, Shakira released Piesdescalzos, with newfound production valuesand a matured sense of self as a songwriter. The opening tracks title, Estoy aqu, said

as much as anything: Shakira had arrived.Hers was a rich voice with a twinge unlikeanything else heard in mainstream musicat the time. The album was a resoundingsuccess with six singles becoming hits andslews of awards heading Shakiras way. Allthis came to the artist before the age of 20.

With her subsequent album, Dnde estnlos ladrones, Shakira proved a bankableartist. She received widespread criticalacclaim, winning her rst Grammy awardsas well as great fan support. To date, thealbum has sold over seven million copies.During the same period, Shakira recordedand released a live album, MTV Unplugged, which ranks among her best selling andmost-praised work. So greatly receivedwere her albums and subsequent tour that

even more ambitious plans were hatched:namely, crossover. While Shakira dominatedthe Spanish-language charts, she had yetto break into the English-language market. With her musical prowess, drive, and thebacking of Emilio Estefan, the path to worlddomination began.

Newly bleached blonde and holding a swatheof English-language tracks, Shakiras famequickly became stratospheric with LaundryService. Many of Shakiras loyal fans feltbetrayed, as she was no longer the singer-songwriter with an acoustic guitar and funkybeats; instead, she was an ber-polished popsinger with blond hair. Many questionedher authenticity, and others dismissed herability to sing in English. Nevertheless, heromnipresence was undeniable; circa 2002,

whether in English or Spanish, Shakirasmusic spun everywhere. It was nighimpossible to enter a bar or disco withouthearing her distinct yodel or the sounds ofpanpipes.

Following up on success oen proves dicult, but with Shakira, the ceiling has proved

The poised pijaperfection of Paulina Rubio and the raw shewolf sensuality of Shakira? Ryan Craggs helps us decide bytelling the stories of the dominatrices of Spanish-language pop.

limitless. She released two albums in a sixmonth span in 2005: Fijacin Oral, Vol. 1 andOral Fixation, Vol. 2. With tracks like La torturaand Hips Dont Lie leading the way, the albumscombined for 20 million record sales. Shakirafurther cemented her imprint in mainstreamconsciousness with her performance at the2006 World Cup nal in front of 3.5 billionviewers. Its safe to say Shakira has reachedsummits most artists only dream of.

Paulina Rubio, the Golden Girl and Queenof Latin Pop, was born to be a star and hasbeen one in her own right; the child of aprominent Mexican lawyer and Mexicanactress Susana Dosamantes, Rubio joinedthe pop group Timbiriche at the age of tenand quickly rose to stardom. In addition torecording and performing 11 albums in hertime with Timbiriche, the Golden Girl alsobegan starring in a number oftelenovelas(soap operas). A clear star, Rubio moved onto solo work with 1991s La chica dorada, making her rst signicant impact on theLatin music scene. Her debut album hassold over 2.5 million albums to date, andher success continued with 1993s 24 Kilatesand 1995s El tiempo es oro further played onthe golden motif. From the blond locks tothe gold records, its a motif that takes littlescrutiny.

The Queen of Latin Pop took a hiatus frommusic for several years soon thereaer, living in Spain and working in televisionto a small extent. She made her fullreturn to music with the release of thealbum Paulina, garnering a number ofawards as well as having the #1 sellingLatin album of 2001. With record sales inexcess of ve million and more hit singles,Universal Music decided it was time forher to crossover, just around the same timeShakira was beginning to. The release ofBorder Girl marked Rubios rst foray intoEnglish-language songs and brought herto mainstream outlet prominence (makingappearances on The Tonight Showwith JayLeno and Rolling Stone) riding the wave of,

and building momentum for, the explosionof Latin music in the United States. Shetoured with other famous acts, sold millionsof records, and became a star of now

international and multilingual renown. Allthe same, while Paulinas crossover provedsuccessful, it was not to the same extent asShakiras.

The 2004 release ofPau-Latinamarked ashi back toward pop in Spanish for theGolden Girl. It was her second consecutiverelease to debut at #1 on the Top LatinAlbums as well as in topping the chartsin countries throughout Latin America.Earning her share of awards and goldrecord sales, Rubio became the rst femalehost for the MTV Latina America Awardsand in 2006 Rubio even performed at theNobel Peace Prize gala in Oslo, Norway.Though not successful on the same levelas Shakira in the English-language marketand sometimes criticized for the quality ofher live singing, Paulinas overall worldwidesuccess and her general dominance inSpanish-language markets trumps whatevershortcomings any detractors may point out.Simply put, she has fully earned her title asthe Golden Girl.

With tour sales and record certicationsmounting, theres no end in sight for thetremendous success of these two femaleartists. The Queen of Latin Pop droppedher newest album, Gran City Pop, in Juneof this year, and Shakiras She-Wolfis outthis month with a mostly English set-list(another predominantly Spanish album iscoming in 2010). Whether its at awardsshows, on tour stages, or through recordsales receipts, the preeminence of theseLatin luminaries cannot be denied. Somemay see them as rivals in the momentwe juxtapose their careers, but to do so isnearly fruitless; comparing the successes oftwo artists known worldwide and who havesold millions upon millions of records is likejudging Mt. Kilimanjaro and K2 against eachother. Perhaps somewhere, some day, therewill be bigger stars than these two, but itscertainly a dicult sight to imagine. Bothartists have enough tracks to ll a playlistof their own on any iPodand in fact, doing

so will probably lead to a good deal of toe-tapping and booty-shaking. Enjoy them forwhat they are, because theres never beenanything like them before.

comparing the successes of two artistsknown worldwide and who have sold millions

upon millions of records is like judgingMt. Kilimanjaro and K2 against each other.

Lisbon is a place that, if yourespending enough time in Madrid, you have no business missingout on. Its that simple. There aretrains, planes, and automobiles of

all sorts shuttling bodies back and forthbetween the two European capitals on anhourly basis. Getting there is a snap, notto mention there are myriad things to seeand do. Isnt that the reason to travel inthe rst place?

In some ways, Lisbon is a little likeMadrids chilled-out, younger brother. It may not be as big or as crazy, butit has its own unique character and

it doesnt just give way in the siblingrivalry. Theres still plenty of Iberianavour in store, and, just to sway you inits favour, a few days in Lisbon shouldprove cheaper than a few days in Madrid.Everyone likes cheaper, right?

First things rst: you have to get toLisbon to enjoy the sights. If driving, ajaunt out on the A-5 to the A-6 shouldget you to Lisbon in about 6 hours ifyou happen to agree with speed limits. If youd rather sit back and relax, thena few options are at your disposal.Bus companies Alsa and Auto Resrun several lines between Madrid andLisbons principal station, Sete Rios. Ifhitting the rails is more your style, thena train between Madrids Chamartn

and the Santa Apolnia station can runyou under 100. When time, comfort, and money are all considered, yingmay be the best option. Low-cost carrierEasyjet and all-inclusive airline Vuelingoer ights for under 100. Getting toand from the airport is also relativelycheap; an Aerobus card costs only 3.50,and taxis to the city centre should costsomewhere around 10not too shabby.

What to do, what to do? Well, rst, youneed to familiarise yourself with thecitys layout. From the train station, youll nd Praa dos Restauradores tothe north, Bairro Alto to the west, andCastelo de So Jorge and the Alfamadistrict to the east. The Lisboa Ask MeCentre, located on P. do Comerico, should help any traveller with maps andmore information, and Ask Me Lisboakiosks can be found throughout thecity. Truthfully, Lisbon is a city worthhaving a walk around; the vibrantlycoloured buildings in many sectionsoer a contrast to what one mightexpect to nd in a capital. In addition,

many white paved streets remind thewandering tourist of a small town inthe south of Spain. Luckily, Lisbon issomewhere in between a small townand the overarching metropolis. Takethe ambling streets of the small town, add in a spate of attractions, and thatssomething close to what youve got.

While walking is certainly worth doing, dont miss out on the public transport inLisbon. Sure, theres the standard fare ofbuses and metro, but for more character, the Portuguese capital oers up tramsand funiculars. The bright yellow andwhite trams are a throwback to days of

less crowded streets and far fewer cars, and the funiculars are just plain fun forgetting a birds eye view of everythinghappening below. The best way to getaround on all modes of transport isthrough the 7 Colinas pass, which can becharged with single trips or day passes. For a vacation of several days, the daypass oers unlimited trips on all formsof public transport. Once again, Lisbonaims to please.

When all is said and done, transport isjust another way to get from Point A toPoint B. The great thing about Lisbon isthere are hoards of Point Bs. The Alfamadistrict is a great place to start. Thislabyrinth-like area, full of slanted streetsand alleys will transport any traveller to

a place wholly original in itself. The bestsight in the area is denitely the Castelode So Jorge, which holds breathtakingviews from high above the city. Forthose not interested in walking, buses 37and tram 28 will help out.

The downtown area, known asBaixa, was reconstructed during theEnlightenment and contrasts greatlywith some of the older neighbourhoods, and makes for a great walking tour. Ifgetting high is your thingno not thatkind of highthen continue onwardto Santa Justas Elevator. Designed bya disciple of French engineer GustavEiel, Santa Justas Elevator connects thedowntown with the Trinidade.

The Belm area highlights any tour ofLisbon. Here, the Golden Age of Portugalshines, with days worth of sights andactivities. In this area, youll nd theMosteiro dos Jernimos, a monasterydating back to 1496, and Museu doDesign, which contains a collection backinto the 1930s, and holds many Art Deco

and even recycled art from Frank Gehry. Also check out the Presidential Palace, which used to be the Royal Palace ofBelm, and the enormous statue toAlfonso de Albuquerque. And if yourenot in the mood for reading up on sightsand having any idea what it is yourelooking at, well, just take in the parksand the river.

Now, while the days are lled withsights to see and plenty of trekking todo, the food of Lisbon is more than justa means of refuelling. Pastis de nata,or custard tarts, are the local favouritesfound throughout the city, and are oen

dusted heavily with cinnamon. Oneof the best places to go for said tarts,Pastis de Belm, is located right nextto the Mosteiro dos Jernimos. Thatsgood news for the weary, hungrytraveller. Authentic Portuguese dishesare best sought in the Alfama area, though the Bairro Alto should provejust as worthy of a visit. Just likein Spain, the pratos do dia, or dailyspecials, take even less of a dent out ofthe wallet, while still allowing for thecomplete gastronomic experience.

Of course, as with any place on a coastwith plenty of sunlight, Lisbon teemswith nightlife. For something moresubdued, head to a Casa de Fado, wheredownbeat traditional Portuguese song can

be fully experienced. No trip to Lisbonshould be devoid of the soulful fadomusic. For those seeking wild nightlifeakin to that of Madrid, have no fear. TheBairro Alto bursts with people, drinks, and bars every night of the week (with anenergy akin to Madrids Malasaa in theeighties). Art Deco bars somehow lookeven cooler once youve put down a fewcaipirinhas. The docas, or docks near theseaports, are usually plenty of fun, witha variety of bars and discos to choosefrom. Lisbon even has a disco, Lux, thatwas partly bankrolled by John Malkovich.Partying with John Malkovich in Lisbon, while not exactly Being John Malkovich, isstill pretty darn cool.

All in all, Lisbon has just abouteverything a traveller could ask for ina short trek from Madrid: cheap prices, beautiful scenery, good food, richhistory, and plenty of bars. You may notunderstand Portuguese, but no worry;just be sure to tell your Portuguesefriends obrigado when you leave, asyoure sure to enjoy your stay.PasTis dE naTa

In some ways,Lisbon is alittle likeMadridschilled-out,youngerbrother. Itmay not beas big or ascrazy, butit has itsown uniquecharacterand it doesntjust give wayin the siblingrivalry.

    wordSbyryAN CrAggS

Ryan Craggs takes us around the other Iberian capital; a place which will feel strange but familiarto people who know Madrid. Large areas of The City of Seven Hills had to be rebuilt aer thedevastating earthquake of 1755, but Lisbon has emerged today with an intriguing diversity ofdistricts and sights waiting to be explored.

    Segovia

An hour and a quarter by bus or half an hourby AVE, Segovia is one of the most attractiveoptions for a day trip or weekend getaway fromMadrid. Matt Johnson went to explore and cameback making a big fuss over a little pig.

One of the great thingsabout this city, as anytrue gato can attest,is its central locationand ease of accessto surroundingsmall town day trips.

Although I havent exactly madethe most of this opportunity (as ittook me the better part of a year tosimply cross over to the other sideof Madrids mountains), Ill refrainfrom cursing myself for suchprocrastinations, and instead saythat if anything it was well worththe wait.

So what lies beyond yonderhills? Well, Segovia, of course.Typically mentioned in thesame breath as its twin daytripcounterpart, Toledo, Segovia is amedieval island in a sea of green, with snowy mountain peakslooming silently in the distance.

Not quite as closed in and quietas the dark alleys of Toledo,Segovias airy streets werebustling with the comings andgoings of tourists and localsalike upon our arrival; all life

emanating outward from itspulsing center: the ancientRoman aqueduct. Now, Idheard from people before aboutthis freestanding architecturalwonder, but I always shruggedit o as euphoria-induced,touristy hype. What could be soimpressive about an aqueduct?Big deal they had plumbing.Congratulations, Segovia.

Cynicisms aside however, assoon as we stepped o thebus, we were standing in thecool shadow of the aqueductshundred foot high, multi-leveledstone faade. Staring down at ustauntingly and stretching o outof eyeshot in both directions, itssmooth, stone slabs seemed eachto weigh a ton apiece as theyrocketed impossibly upwardsinto the clear Segovian sky. Theblocks were set so perfectlyon this masterpiece of ancientengineering that I could do littlemore than stand, mouth agape,in perplexed thought. First of all,how much manual labour mustit have taken to transport thesemassive quantities of rock? How

precise must those cuts havebeen for it to withstand so manycenturies of weather and wars?Howd they manage to keep thewater constantly owing so asto quench the thirst of an entiretown? Whose big idea was this

anyway? Little time was wastedin pondering these questionsthough this was aer all aday trip. The clock was ticking, our time was waning, and I stillhad a castle, a cathedral, and acochinillo to catch.

So we headed away from theaqueduct, pictures snapped andmemories logged, in the directionof Segovias ancient cathedral. Now, let me say that no matterhow many cathedrals Ive visitedduring my European conquests, the shear enormity of their sizenever ceases to amaze me. AsI stood, neck craning and eyessquinting to make out the faint

gures depicted on its manyaltitudinous apertures, I guredthat from front to back, minus thegigantic choir los and pulpitsoccupying its centre space, onecould play a proper game of full-contact football, or at a stretch, apickup baseball game. Aside fromthese pre-modern Megadomefantasies, I took in the goldenaltarpieces and intricately carvedcapillas, imagining with wonderthe amount of time and moneythat must have gone into such aconstruction. If wed taken justve seconds to examine eachpiece of artwork, Id probablystill be there today no doubt

jobless, dehydrated, and certainlynot taking the time to write itall down for our October issue.Regardless, we wandered aroundfreezing through our t-shirtsfor about an hour or so beforedeciding to listen to our growlingstomachs that it was nally timefor our long awaited rst taste ofSegovias specialty: roast sucklingpig, or cochinillo.

To many this may seem a cruelendeavour, the slaughtering ofinfant animals. My apologies toPETA. But to me, baby animals, adult animals, raw animals, small animals, uy animals, fried animals, happy animals, sadanimals everyones welcome tothe palate party. My taste budsdont discriminate. A bit barbaric, yes but Im an omnivore, damnit all of the above simply spelldelicious, and cochinillo, theSpanish delicacy that Ive forso long seen devoured by TVhosts on travel programs backhome, was certainly worth thehype. Cute? I guess. Cuddly?Perhaps. Tasty? You bet yourshorts. Would I like to pet onebefore I eat it? Well, lets not getcarried away, but we did havesome laughs over the idea of acochinillo petting zoo before themeal was served. And when the

food nally did arrive, it took allI had to keep from going face toplate like a county fair contestantin the no-hands pie race. It wastherefore with a well-manneredexercise of self-control that, cutlery wielded and ready, Imouthed a silent apology to both

Piglet and Pooh, and crunchedthrough. What ensued was thepinnacle of pork-dom on earth:an outer layer of crispy, goldenskin giving way to a succulent, salty white meat centre;altogether so tender and delicate

that the grinning camareros whoquartered it tableside were ableto do so using only the bluntedge of a dinner plate. I couldveeaten more much more, and itsaddens my heart (but not mywaistline) to know that cochinilloisnt something I can orderevery day at my corner-sidecaf. Regardless of this post-coital-like comedown though, wemanaged to regroup once againand continued on to the days lastdestination: Segovias Alczar.

The supposed inspirationfor Disneys Magic KingdomCastle, we found the Alczarsitting proudly atop a cli at the

highest point in town, perchingprotectively over its kingdomlike a mother grizzly watchingher cubs. And when we crossedthe drawbridge over the driedup mote and entered the castlegates, I couldnt help but feelingthat I was walking through aportal into another time, and itwas easy for the child-soldier inme to imagine being suited inarmour atop a trusty steed, mybattle-blunted blade victoriouslysheathed, returning homewith honour aer a successfulconquest in the name of Espaa.

I was a bit disappointed to learn

however, that this castle, like somany other Spanish landmarks, had been badly burnt during oneof Spains numerous wars, andwas now just a partially rebuiltmodel of what it once was. Theoutside at least, along withmany artefacts, had managed tohave been salvaged somehow, and although the inside didcontain slight twinges of modernmasonry, the time-travellingeect still remained on in fullforce. All the antique furnitureand tiny suits of armour ondisplay served as a comicalreminder of how small peopleused to be in those times as well, and I laughed to think that thewar heroes of yesteryear onlycame up to my chest. If only Idbeen born a few hundred yearsearlier too small to make it inthe world of pro sports today,I couldve easily been a battleproven warrior back then knighted by the king, sendingenemies of the throne intoknee-knocking ts of tremblingterror, and causing unsuspectingseoritas to swoon with a smile.

Anyway. Another highlightof the castle was its armoury, which contained numeroussuits of armor, swords, arrows, cannons, and glass box displays

of expertly craed cross bowsand antique archery equipment. As fascinating as these weaponswere to examine though, it waseerie to think how many liveshad been taken at the expense oftheir sharpened tips, and dicultto imagine trying to ght hand

to hand not only while encagedin a constricting shell of clankingmetal, but to simply see anythingat all through the narrow slits ofthe knights enormous, globularhelmets. The shadows of lateaernoon were starting to stretchlonger though, and so it was witha determined demonstration ofself restraint that I begrudginglyobeyed the NO TOCAR signspasted all over creation andturned to the exit head down, hands in pockets, and ready forthe last leg of our castle tour.

Aer winding our way up the152 spiralling stairs to the topof the Alcazars tower, we werewelcomed with a truly panoramicview for miles on every side. Tothe south and west, a quiet villagenestled itself cosily into the hills;to the north and east, a sleepyriver snaked through thickets oftrees, past the walls of Segovias

town limits, and upwards towardsthe mountains; and everywherewe turned the landscape waswashed in the glowing warmth ofgolden sunshine. While we stoodtaking it all in and regrettingthe advancing short hand of theever-impatient clock, a lightbreeze carrying with it the scentof fresh grass played winsomelyat our apping shirt sleeves aswe watched the shadows of asinking Spanish sun deepen likepuddles of twilight, splashingnavy blue tiger stripes acrossthe countryside and bringingwith them the close of anotherbeautiful Iberian aernoon.

All in all it was a perfect day.I was sad to say goodbye toSegovia, my new favouriteneighbour, but thanks to Spainsincreasingly ecient system ofhigh speed railways, its littleless than a stones throw away. And although I wont be makingmonthly visits, I can at least takecomfort in knowing that whetherIm homesick for green grass andfresh air or just hungry for someroasted piglet, Segovia, like itsaqueduct has proven, isnt goinganywhere any time soon.

If pop culture hatesa void, teen popculture more so. Asthe pre-teen andteen-ction fansappetites grew evermore voracious andanxious with theHarry Potterseriesreaching its climax,Stephanie Mayers

Since Twilights release in 2005,Meyer has gone on to spin the yarninto a four-tome series and sell over 70million copies. The love story between

the human Bella Swan and the vampireEdward Cullen in the series rst bookwas turned into a movie that grossedalmost $70 million in its rst weekendalone in the US and Canada.

Like with the Harry Potterlms, thebooks are already written and therewill be no plot surprises for those who

are already fans, just the satisfactionof seeing the live action depiction. Forthe rest of us The movie begins withEdward breaking up with Bella andleaving town to protect and keep heraway from vampires. The distraughtBella achieves visions of her lostlove through dangerous pursuits andbegins to forge a close friendshipwith Jacob, who is revealed to be awerewolf. Some girls have all the luck, you might say. But it does turn out tobe fortuitous when Jacob and his packof werewolves are able to save herfrom vampires (seeking revenge onBella for the death of their companionin Twilight).

In the meantime, a Romeo & Juliet-style twist leads Edward to think Bella

has killed herself and he decides hedoesnt want to exist without her. Hetravels to Italy to seek out and provokethe wrath of the Volturi, the worldsvampire royalty who are capable ofdestroying him. Edwards sister tellsBella and the pair set o to save him.Guess what happens next?Revamp of the vamp romp.

his summer, as the crowds atthe Estadio Santiago Bernaburoared their approval at newsignings Kak, Cristiano Ronaldoand Karim Benzema and

chanted the name of their newly re-instatedpresident, demonstrating their approvalat the second coming of the Galctico era,Florentino Prez himself was quick not totake all the credit. The sporting model uponwhich his two stints at the helm of thecapital club have been based is the work ofone Don Santiago Bernabu Yeste, who alsolent his name to the very stadium which isnow home to the new recruits.

Perhaps the single most importantman in the history of Real Madrid, it isnot surprising that the anniversary ofBernabu's death is commemorated everyyear on 2 June in both his hometown and inMadrid itself. Indeed, this year, on only hissecond day in charge, Prez concluded aday of negotiations for Kak by attending

the annual memorial at the Iglesia de losSagrados Corazones, opposite the stadiumwhere his legend was born. The man who would occupy various roles atthe club, beginning as a striker, ending aspresident and in between acting as captain, manager and board member was born 8

June 1895 in Albacete to a lawyer father, aprofession which he too would pursue. TheBernabu family moved to Madrid whileSantiago was young, and having regularlyattended matches as a fan, he joined theyouth ranks of the club in 1909 at age 14.

The youngster, who quickly establishedhimself in the side becoming a rst teamxture by age 17, also volunteered to help inthe construction of the clubs rst purpose

built stadium, the ODonnell Stadium, in1912. The story goes that he was the rstto dig up the ground and paint both thefences and lines at the new ground.

He wasnt paid a peseta for his eorts, but the rewards began to come when hewas captaining the side only four years

later. Notching up over 200 goals for LosMerengues, Bernabu eventually retiredas a player in 1927 but this was onlythe beginning for Bernabu. Up until theoutbreak of the Spanish civil war in 1936 he

remained at the club, initially as a directorbut then becoming assistant manager andnally, manager.

Bernabu was decorated for services tothe Nationalist cause in the war; in fact, hewas forced to ee to Paris when he wasdenounced by fellow club members at RealMadrid, who themselves had Republicansympathies.

Upon his return, Bernabu found the clubhad been eectively destroyed. Severalmembers of the old administration hadbeen killed or had disappeared during thewar and some trophies had been stolen.Still, he set to work.

Taking over as President in 1944,

Bernabu restructured the club at alllevels, ensuring every section and level ofthe club had independent technical teams. He also recruited Raimundo Saporta as PRChief - a tough negotiator who would laterplay a crucial role in the signing of AlfredoDi Stefano - who quickly set to workcharming the journalists that mattered.Aer a year at the helm, the Presidentset about reconstructing the Chamartnstadium and following a blessing andsplashing of holy water by a Priest,Bernabu himself broke the rst ground ofthe stadium with a pickaxe. The stadiumwas inaugurated two years later in 1947.In 1952, to celebrate Madrids half century,Colombias Millonarios of Bogot wereinvited to a mini-tournament and broughtwith them a 23- year-old Argentine by

the name of Alfredo di Stfano. Bernabuliked what he saw, and despite the factthat Di Stfano had signed for Barcelonaand even turned out for the club in twofriendly matches, following a complicatedtransfer saga he eventually found his wayto the capital club which would later makehim honorary President.

La Saeta Rubia (the Blond Arrow), as he wasknown, was to change Madrids footballingfortunes forever and solidify PresidentBernabus reputation. During 11 seasonsat the club, Di Stfano won eight league

titles and ve European Cups, scored 49goals in Europe, was named Pichichi (topleague scorer) ve times and twice won thecoveted Ballon dOr.Meanwhile, the President himself washonoured by the fans in 1955 when theyvoted, against his own wishes, to renamethe stadium the Santiago Bernabu intribute to the one who had helped build theclub from its earliest beginnings. However, the man himself continued to refer to it asthe Chamartn stadium.

Bernabu even had a hand in laying thefoundations for the Champions League, meeting with the LEquipe journalist GabrielHanot in a Paris hotel room to discuss theidea of building on the Copa Latina whichwas at the time an international football

tournament for club sides from Spain, Italy,France and Portugal. It seems perhapstting then that Real Madrid are the alltime record holders having won the trophyan unprecedented total of nine times.

His last public appearance came at theage of 82 at the ground which bore hisname, where ttingly he witnessed a4-0 drubbing of Barcelona. He had beensuering from cancer for some time beforehe nally succumbed to the disease. Lessthan a month later as the 1978 World Cupkicked o in Argentina, players wore blackarmbands and a minute of silence wasobserved. In 2002, he was posthumouslyawarded the FIFA Order of Merit, the highesthonour bestowed by the governing body.It seems only death could put an end

to Bernabus association with RealMadrid, whose ties to the club wouldlast an amazing 69 years. During the 35years spent as president, the club won 6European Cups, 16 League titles, 6 SpanishCups and ensured that the name of RealMadrid would forever be associated withsilverware.

Florentino Prez has secured his place in Real Madrid history by presiding over two eras ofGalcticos and turning them into the biggest sports club business in the world. But will he everde-throne Santiago Bernabu Yeste? Halima Ali recalls the life of the legend who built the legend.

    in 1955,they voted,against his

own wishes,to renamethe stadiumthe SantiagoBernabu intribute tothe one whohad helpedbuild theclub fromits earliestbeginnings.

Sweden need a big performance inthat game in Copenhagen aer ridingtheir luck in the last two matches. Alast gasp winner from Ibrahimovic inHungary and an 82nd minute own goalin their favour against minnows Maltarescued a qualifying campaign that wasin tatters.

TheSwiss will be especially keen to exorcisethe memory of their humbling homedefeat to the Luxembourgers a year ago.If they do that, they will need just a drawat home against the inconsistent Israelis.Israel will be most realistically aimingfor the playo spot and crossing theirngers for other results to go their way.

The Greece against Latvia matchstands out as the crunch tie, the onemost likely to set up a way into theplayos for the Euro 2004 winners or

the Baltic state still bidding for theirrst World Cup Finals.

hardworking Slovakia will qualifyfor their rst major nals if theyavoid defeat against the Slovenes

in Bratislava. Even if they lose, victoryin their nal match against Polandwould see them qualify.

Northern Ireland, Czech Republicand Poland fans are rmly awarethat Slovakias role is the key to theoutcome of the group, and they willbe cheering the Slovaks to victory asif they were their own on the 10th knowing only a win for the Bratislavaboys will furnish them with any realchance of a playo spot. The racefor second place looks wide open onpaper, but Slovenias nal game fallingagainst San Marino makes anything

other than another three points almostinconceivable. The most realisticobjective for UEFAs smallest memberis to keep their total number of goalsconceded in qualifying under 50.

Northern Irelands inconsistencyhas le them with little more thana glimmer of World Cup hope. IfSan Marino cant produce a miracle,Northern Ireland will need a baddefeat for Slovenia and a convincingvictory on their visit to the CzechRepublic.

The Czechs themselves are in thebest position to supplant Sloveniasplayo spot claims with the advantageof home crowds in both of their nalgames.

    The largely disappointing Poles,

still reeling from the sacking ofmanager Beenhakker, can only wintheir two games and cross their ngers.

Wales are chasing only the prideand higher seeding that third placewould confer to them. To do it,however, will require two away wins, the rst of which against third-placerivals Finland in their own lair.
