Introduction:(Background)

The word euthanasia evokes emotions, regardless of the way it is used. Both fight for dignity, liberty, autonomy, rights and humaneness. For some people euthanasia is a manifestation of the individual’s autonomy equal with a responsible control of one’s destiny for other people, euthanasia is merely a euphemism for killing, the violation of human life and an infringement of the human right to life.

Global Perception about Euthanasia

Like attitudes regarding euthanasia, euthanasia law and practices are divergent.While euthanasia is prohibited in most countries, a few countries have legalized euthanasia recently,

Voluntary euthanasia has been legally permissible in the Netherlands and Belgium since 2002 (Griffiths, Weyers, and Adams 2008)in Luxembourg since March 2009.

In the United States, only Oregon and Washington have legalized assistedsuicide.

The Swiss government permits assisted suicide by nondoctors on foreigners, which has triggered so-called suicide tourism (Griffiths, Weyers, and Adams 2008, 477; Harding 2004).

SETTING: major tertiary care hospitals in Karachi

SIZE: 200 doctors as extracted by statistical formula.

PROCEDURE: Non Probability Sampling

Inclusion criteria: doctors working in ICUs and Emergency, or having exposure with terminally ill patients.
