As you are aware, end of 2009 EUSA celebrated

its10th anniversary with a magnificent gala

dinner in Vienna, an unforgettable night which

has seen the participation of our Member’s del-

egates, the Executive Committee and our staff.

To those who are going through the pages of our

Magazine for the first time, I would like to devote

a few words on our Association and the activities

carried out so far.

At present, EUSA is one of the most active Univer-

sity Sport Associations worldwide which gathers

43 European countries and organises yearly Eu-

ropean Universities Championships, EUSA Cups

as well as Conventions, Symposiums and other

events all over Europe. The appreciation and re-

spect which is highly reputed in our Association,

arises from its structure, its management, its ca-

pability to effect and communicate in the fields

of culture and education.

Moreover, the significant increase of the partici-

pation in our events is a clear demonstration of

the huge success achieved by EUSA in its activ-

ity being today the benchmark for the University

Institutions.

As you can see from the broad range of activi-

ties just described, EUSA is an Association that

does not stand still. It also provides a very useful

and updated Website which keeps our Members

constantly informed on the activities and all the

events, facilitating the universities in enrolling

their teams in our Championships. I feel very

privileged and honoured to be involved with such

a dynamic Association. However, all these activi-

ties are only possible due to the enormous level of

support and encouragement we receive from our

WEL

E AD

DRE

SS

Members and the huge work of our Secretariat

which can count on a new fully equipped office in

Ljubljana, Executive Committee Members, Techni-

cal Delegates, Student and Medical Commission.

Notwithstanding the great achievement we wit-

nessed through the last decade, EUSA is now ap-

proaching a new era in which innovative goals are

about to be reached. As a matter of fact, thanks

to a continued work aimed at spreading out the

values and the passion for the University sport, we

managed to involve more countries in our activity

as well as to meet high academic authorities. The

result of this effort is the establishment of the

EUSA Games to be held in Cordoba, Spain, which

for the first time will foresee the organisation of

10 different Championships at the same place at

the same time.

Moreover, EUSA has strengthened the relations

with other Continental Associations and is setting

up the organisation of Intercontinental Champion-

ships which will be determined in the nearby future.

Our Association is also involved in cooperation

with ENGSO and other partners in a project which

has been chosen by EU among all those presented

on the problem of doping. The project is supported

by the EU funds and will foresee the organisation

of Conferences and Seminars on this specific mat-

ter aimed at reducing doping in sport.

Last, but certainly not least, I want to gratefully

acknowledge our major sponsor – Asiana Airline

and partner – FISU, both demonstrating a strong

support and commitment to our Association.

Alberto Gualtieri, President

2010

EUROPEAN UNIVERSITIES CHAMPIONSHIPS 2010In 2001, when the EUC began to be organised,

EUSA started with two events – basketball and

volleyball. The list has been gradually expanding

ever since, and while some sports are organised

every year, some are organised biannually.

In 2010, there were 11 European Universities

Championships on the calendar of the European

University Sports Association. Individual student

athletes and university teams represented 296

universities from 30 countries participating in

the 11 successfully concluded events.

The number of participants at the championships has been steadily growing. If there were 250 par-ticipants in 2001, there are no less than 2770 participants in 2010. This is more than tenfold in

a relatively short time.

We are also proud of the increasing participation

of women. While some sports are still dominated

by men, in most other sports participation of

women is very high.

German and Portuguese students were present in

all editions of the European Universities Cham-

and Polish teams, missing only one championship.

We are also very happy to record participation of

some new countries, like Azerbaijan.

6th EUROPEAN UNIVERSITIES ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPAmsterdam, the Netherlands: August 19-22, 2010

The 6th European Universities Rowing Champi-

onship, taking place between August 19th and

22nd hosted nearly 500 participants, representing

70 universities from 13 countries competing in

22 boat classes. This makes the EUC Rowing 2010

not only the largest EUSA event of the year, but

also the biggest EUC ever held since the found-

ing of EUSA.

Due to the good and fair racing conditions com-

bined with some tail wind the standing records

were broken in six boat classes. The M2x record

of the University of Zagreb (6:51.20) got no rest:

Poznan University of Life Sciences (POL) broke it

in the first heat, Vienna was even faster in the

second heat. In the repechages the University of

Amsterdam sharpened the record with four sec-

onds, but in the final Poznan University of Life

Sciences finally turned it down to 6:30.97.

Students Sports Netherlands introduced a new

award for the best university: the EUSA SSN

Award went to the University of Economy Bydgo-

szcz (POL). The EUSA Salver for the best country

went to the team of Great Britain.

EUSA representatives; Mr ^eslovas Garbaliauskas,

Executive Committee member, and Mr Josip

Kosteli}, EUSA Technical Delegate for rowing,

expressed their gratitude to the organisers, con-

gratulated all participants for taking part in the

championship and welcomed many spectacular

results achieved this year.

7th EUROPEAN UNIVERSITIES TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPCoimbra, Portugal: July 25-31, 2010

The University Stadium of the University of Co-

imbra received 34 teams from 16 countries, a

record number of participants. Many players have

positions in current ATP and WTA rankings.

After more than 200 matches, the new European

champions were known this Saturday. In the men’s

team final, the title went to Kozminski who defeat-

ed Zagreb University by 2-0, in a very competitive

game. In the women’s team final the title went to

Leonard Da Vinci who beat Moscow by 3-0.

Besides the games, the participants got to know

Coimbra University, the city, its culture and tradi-

tions and Figueira da Foz Beach.

In his balance statement, the O.C. President,

Ricardo Duarte, considered that all delegations

had the same opinion: it was the best European

Universities tennis Championship ever. EUSA Ten-

nis Technical Delegate, Nick Grivas, agreed that

“the big numbers of participants shows that ten-

nis is a very popular sport among students. The

Coimbra Organizing Committee had done a tre-

mendous work ensuring players very good con-

ditions for playing tennis, living and socializing,”

adding that we are very proud that as a result

of Tennis EUC, Coimbra students and community

have now more courts to practice tennis.

Next year the Championship will take place in St.

Gallen, Switzerland.

EUROPEAN ANTI-DOPINGINITIATIVE (EADIn)The project is aimed at establishing an Europe-

an-wide Anti-Doping mentality in the youth

sector by establishing a moral tenor towards

concepts such as Fair-play, sensitizing and rais-

ing awareness on all levels of the complex social

environment surrounding the doping problem-

atic and implementing strategies to motivate

young people to pass on the message and create

a strong multiplying effect.

Core partners in the project are the Network for

the European Youth Work in Sports within the

European Non-Governmental Sports Organisa-

tion (ENGSO Youth), European University Sports

Association (EUSA), German Sports Youth within

the German Olympic Committee (DSJ), French

Olympi Committee (CNOSF), Olympic Committee

of Slovenia (OKS), Austrian Athletics Federation

(ÖLV), Italian Federation of Aerobics and Fitness

(FIAF), International Catholic Federation of Physi-

cal and Sporting Education (FICEP) and Doping

Prevention Center at the Heidelberg University

of Education (ZDP).

The actions of the project will be to develop a

peer-to-peer network of Anti Doping Junior

Ambassador (ADJA) through Youth Camps, de-

velop a best practice catalogue and an EU Model

for preventive Anti-Doping Education, implement

this model in several levels (Local, National, Eu-

ropean), produce educational training tools to

support the work of the ADJA and to spread the

information and organise seminars and confer-

ences on National and European levels in order to

encourage networking, communication and fu-

ture long-term cooperation between the partners.

The project started in 2010 and will continue in

different phases by the end of March 2012.

Success of the project is also a result of a good

cooperation of EUSA and ENGSO Youth, which

has been strengthened in 2010.

The European Anti-Doping Initiative is funded by

the EU programme Preparatory Action in the field

of sport, and promotes healthy sports participa-

tion, without drugs.

EUSA SPONSOREUSA is proud to see its sponsor Asiana Air-

lines nominated the Airline of the Year 2010

at the 2010 World Airline Awards - known as the

Passenger's Choice awards in Hamburg, Germany

earlier this year.

This award by Skytrex represents a true recogni-

tion of the front-line product and service that

Asiana Airlines is delivering to its customers, and

the slogan of 'the Passenger's Choice awards' un-

derlines the fact that Asiana Airlines are succeed-

ing in satisfying the hardest critics - their users.

Asiana Airlines is a member of the Star Alliance

group, and has signed a sponsorship agreement

with EUSA for the period of 2010-2012.

For more than two decades, Asiana's main goal

has been to offer its passengers the highest safety

and service standards. With the aim of guiding

every thought and action of its employees, Asiana

adopted the term Uncompromising Safety as the

main theme of its mission statement. In keep-

ing with this target of uncompromising safety,

Asiana maintains the youngest fleet worldwide

and, as the first airline in the world, was granted

ISO 9002 certification on aircraft maintenance.

With its young fleet, Asiana today serves over 80

cities in 20 countries, and represents the larg-

est connection between mainland China and the

rest of the world, serving also routes from Europe

(currently from Frankfurt, London, Paris).
