Preface
EuroVis 2011, the 13th Eurographics / IEEE Symposium on Visualization, was held June 1 - 3, 2011, inBergen, Norway. The proceedings are published as a special issue of the Eurographics Computer Graph-ics Forum journal. The symposium, which started in 1990 as the Eurographics Workshop on Visualizationin Scientific Computing and was called VisSym after 1999, has been known as EuroVis since 2005.
EuroVis attracts contributions that broadly cover the field of visualization. Topics include visualizationtechniques for spatial data, such as volumetric, tensor, and vector field datasets, and for non-spatial data, such as graphs, text, and high-dimensional datasets. EuroVis also covers the theory of visualization, hardware acceleration, large datasets, perception, interaction, user studies, visual analytics, and manyapplication areas of visualization.
After the submission deadline in early December 2010, 194 manuscripts were reviewed in a two-stageprocess that resulted in 54 accepted papers for an acceptance rate of 27.8%. Four additional off-topicpapers were desk-rejected by the chairs without review. During the first review cycle, each paper wasreviewed by at least four reviewers. The primary and secondary reviewers were all members of theInternational Program Committee (IPC). The primary reviewer recruited at least two additional tertiaryreviewers, typically from outside the IPC. After all the reviews were completed, the primary reviewerled an online discussion among all reviewers and was responsible for writing a summary review andrecommendation.
Based on the reviewers’ recommendations, the reviews, the online discussions, and after a thoroughdeliberation by the chairs, 54 papers were conditionally accepted with minor revisions. Four papers weredeemed to have substantial potential after major revisions, and were invited for fast-track reviewing forComputer Graphics Forum for possible publication in a future issue.
After the second review cycle, the revised papers were again reviewed by the primary reviewers, andall were finally accepted for publication. The review process was double-blind for tertiary reviewers:only the members of the IPC and the chairs knew the identity of the authors. A great effort was made toidentify and prevent conflicts of interest at all levels, and all reviewers were asked to read and agree tothe IEEE Visualization and Graphics Technical Committee (VGTC) ethics guidelines.
As the co-chairs of EuroVis 2011, we are thankful to everybody who helped to enable the symposium. In particular, we thank keynote speaker Scott McCloud for his talk “Comics: A Medium in Transition”as well as M. Eduard Gröller for his capstone address. We thank Ivan Viola, organizational chair ofEuroVis 2011, for the great effort he invested, and the visualization research group in Bergen, who helpedtremendously with many aspects of this symposium. We deeply appreciate the hard work of the membersof the IPC and the many tertiary reviewers. We thank James Stewart for his excellent and timely supportof the Precision Conference System (PCS) that was used for the entire submission and reviewing process. We also thank Stefanie Behnke, who handled the publication of this journal with professionalism andpatience. And we thank the authors of all submitted papers and all of the conference attendees.
We also thank our supporters and sponsors for their important financial support: the Norwegian ResearchCouncil, Statoil, Christian Michelsen Research, Institute of Marine Research, Schlumberger, MedVizNetwork Bergen, GE Vingmed Ultrasound, Siemens, NorSIGD, VRVis Research Center, Rocksource,IBM Research, VACCINE Center of Excellence, NVIDIA, and Morgan Kaufman.
We hope that you enjoy reading this collection of high-quality visualization papers.

Comics: A Medium in Transition
Scott McCloud
AbstractMore than any other popular art form, comics are sensitive to the formats, platforms, and devices thatconnect them to readers. How can this unique medium communicate content effectively when all as-sumptions about its form are up for grabs? Author and comics artist Scott McCloud puts a blizzard ofnew trends into perspective in a fast-moving visual presentation.
Short BiographyScott McCloud has been writing and drawing comics since 1984. His book Understanding Comics wasa New York Times Notable book for 1994, and is available in 16 languages. McCloud has lectured andconsulted on comics and digital media for Google, MIT, Pixar, Sony, and the Smithsonian Institution. His online comics and ongoing commentary can be found at scottmccloud.com.
