The Willesden Dodgers - 1st Base- Jive

En '83 Clive Colder had the idea of making a hiphop rhythm track LP. It did so well in the Statesthat afterwards a group of Zomba contractedfunk -rock producers and engineers joined theteam. This 2nd LP is the result. Expectations forit are to sell 250.000 copies in the USA. It's againfull of electro beat and at least bound for thedance charts.

Shirley Murdock - Shirley Murdock!- Elektra

Highly danceable and fast synthesizer funk tunes.Shirley has a dry, pinched voice especially greatin the lower parts of the gamut. In the higher partssometimes reminiscent of Michael J. in his Jack-son 5 period. Zapp team wrote and produced thealbum.

SOS Band - Sands Of Time- Tabu

SOS's music is melodious as always but their beatin general has become harder, less smooth. Thefinest, 1st single of this LP is doing quite well inthe UK. (17 for 3rd consecutive week). Produc-tion of course by T. Lewis and J. Jam.

En23,DISCO DANCE TALENT

Recommended new dance reco ds as selected by the editorial train of Music & Media, with good chances for a crossover to the pop charts. No distinction is made between 7" and 12" releases, the emphasis ison dance orientated product. Original country and telephone numbers are mentioned as known. Please note that not all records are necessarily released in every European country.

Grand Master Funk - Who Messed Up The World (Palladium) swede.Master available excl. USA. Contact: Torbjorn Sten at Palladium, te1.8- 540695.A rare thing, a New York rapper debuting on a Swedish label. This record is an electro rhythm rap combin-ing all kinds of noises from things such as a dustbin used as a drum and a plastic squeak doll for babies,Even Reagan's voice is fit in to suggest the answer to the question posed in the title. Great fun.

Fehlmann's Ready Made - Ready Made (Mercury) GermanyExtremely clever mix of various great film music themes like John Berry's Bond -tune and Ennio Morri-cone's 'Once Upon, all linked and wrapped up in a fashionable dancebeat. A noteworthy instrumental.

Rocky M. - Disco Lady (Arrow/EMI Electrola) GermanyGermany is still being washed over by Modern Talking clones and sound -a -likes (who can blame new talentfor trying? all MT's singles went to No. I). A boy who comes very near is Rocky M.; his soft -sweet voiceover this Patrick Cowley- like (131 BPM) could make the Germans go for it.

Gibson Brothers - Party Tonight (Julisa/Carrere) FranceThe men renowned for mass hits like 'Cuba' and 'Que Sera are trying to make their comeback. This timetheir vocal share has been diminished and replaced by females to support the chorus in a carnivalesquesing -a -long.

Candi Mc Kenzie - Turn Me Up (Adventure/WEN UKA Swain & Joiey production, not at all the stuff we're used to hearing from them. It sometimes revealssimilarities with Frank Arian's Eruption. Dark timbered female voice in a floorfilling groove. Already aclub fave in Amsterdam.

Wally Badarou - Novela Das Nose (Spider Woman) (4TH & Broadway) UKA jazzy latin sounding track by black instrumentalist W.B., as "empty" as the previous hitsingle 'ChiefInspector' of which a Precinct 13 version fills the flip. From the Oscar winning movie 'Kiss Of The SpiderWoman.

World's Famous Supreme Team - Hey! D.J. (Charisma/Virgin) UKA re-release, this cheerful and funky rap which origins from the time they supported Malcolm McClarenback in '83.

Precious Wilson - Jewel Of The Nile (Jive) UKAfter Ruby Turner's 'I'm In Love' and Billy Ocean's Eurohot no. 1 'When The Going' this could be thethird winning single from the OST Jewel Of The Nile. A moody and exotic uptempo ballad almost breath-ing an oriental atmosphere. But that might be on purpose.

Centerfold - Dictator (Injection/CNR) HollandAnother (sexy) Dutch female trio with much potential to crossover. This new single is even given airplayon the less commercial stations in their homecountry. Trendy floor filler in a very funky mood that reallydeserves to do well. Who wouldn't want to get in touch with this kind of Dutch ? Dance Mix by RutgerKroese who usually remixes records of the Star Sisters and Mai Tai (all on the same label). After onlytwo weeks they are already bound for the top 10.

Millie Scott - Prisoner Of Love (Fourth & Broadway) UKpubl. Island Music, tel. 1-8469141. Master owner Island, tel. 1-7411511Pushy black Hi-NRG backed by sharp brass sections. Millie is a powerful and very experienced vocalistalong the lines of Jocelyn Brown, Jenny Burton and Jennifer Holliday. Chart potential in Holland due toits appearance in the official retail tipparade overthere and AVRO's choice to make it record of the weekfor the necessary airplay.

Ashford and Simpson - Time Talkin' (EMI) UKpubl. Spurs Music Publishing. Master owner EMI rel. 1-4864488High tempo-ed disco alternated by slower soul breaks from the couple that always perform vivid duets sowell. From the forthcoming musical 'Time' (starring a.o. Cliff Richard and Sir Laurence Olivier).

Swan - Don't Talk About It (Memory Records) Italypubl. Renata/B. Mikuiski tel. (Germany) 6436/4052One of the best Eurobeat 12" of '86 up to now, a smart production containing all the ingredients that makethis kind of music so successful. Pop market potential especially for France, Spain and Italy.

Michael Jeffries - Razzle Dazzle (Warner Brothers) USApubl. WB Music/Warner Tamerlane, tel. 213-2733323. Master owner Warner Brothers, tel. 213-8469090Extremely computerized funk (bass layers as catchy as in Deodato's 'Fire.) from "a dynamic new artistfrom the Bay Area" in the States. Best track of the OST 'Wild Cats'.

13B & Q Band - Dreamer (No 1 remix)/On The Shelf (Zyx) Germanypubl. Schacht Musikverlage, tel. 40-225143. Master owner (for GAS) Zyx, tel. 6436-4052Since their big hit 'On The Beat' ('81), the BB & Q Band (who moved from Capitol to the minor indies)have only gone downhill. Last year there was some revival with their (SOS band like) 'Genie and '86brings us the slow funky 'Dreamer' with a rhythm stolen from Princess' Say I'm Your Na 1' and the moreup tempo 'On The Shelf comparable with their music from those succesful early 80's.

David Grant - Close To You (Chrysalis) UKDavid Grant's new single has the capacity to hit several popcharts in Europe (for instance Holland): a silkyand floating ballad from a gifted vocalist that is able to produce hits on his own without the vocal supportof his personal friend Jaki Graham.

NEW TALENTRecords by new etc as selected by the editorial team of Music & Media for the Pan -European market and beyond. Active radii:10vprogrammers,are not necessarily released in all territories. International A&R experts and music publishers on the look out for new deals could contact thenumbers are men ioned as known.

Richard T. Bear - The Runner (LP) (Teldec) Germanypubl. and master owner: contact Heidi Muench at Teldec, tel.: 40-4019295.American session -musician who made his first album for RCA in 1977. This is his 5th album and his 2ndfor Teldec. A well-balanced set of American pop and ballads. The title track is the most commercial (andcommon) offering, originally written by Georgio Moroder for Diana Ross. 'New York City' is a romanticpiano ballad in the best Billy Joel -tradition. Bear is a good songwriter and his own compositions can easilymatch the quality of the cover songs.

Bezu et le Grand St. Germain - Ali Baba (Joy -Records) Francepubl. and master owner: contact Zyx Records in Germany, tel. 6436-4052.French quartet with Monsieur Bezu as the centre. A cheerful ditty that mixes a Honey M -type of productionwith a bit of oriental flavour and the typical French temperament. With the right type of promotional back-ing (e.g. appearances in big family shows) this could be the next novelty hit.

Memo - Everybody Loves A Hero (Polydor) Germanypubl. Chappell, tel.: 40- 441531. Master owner: contact Polly Schlodtmann, tel. 40308702.A mainstream Top 40 pop song with an infectious hook and a crisp production by the Anglo-Turkish Memo(Kurt). The song is taken from the conceptual album Anya & Marni. A novel by the same title was pub-lished last month as well (also written by Memo). Deserves a European release.

Paris Biz - Black And Blue (Really Blue) (Mekano Records) Swedenpubl. Sweden Music. Master owner: contact Willard B. Ahdritz at Mekano, tel. 8-7829569/631055.This is very, very good. An intriguing pop single with a slow but definite and forward beat. Enwrappedin a tasteful production, the slightly detached female vocals fare well in this synthesizer backed (blue-eyed)pop composition. A timeless melody and a styleful production, the best product we heard since very longfrom Sweden. Act now!

Trance Dance - Do The Dance (CBS) Swedenpubl. and master owner: contact George Reispass at CBS, tel. 8-980250.Infectuous percussion -driven pop by a multi -national foursome. Youthful hedonism in a colourful ModernRomance -type of production (done by the son of Motorhead's Lemmy, Paul Inder).

Style - Dover -Calais (Alpha) SwedenThose Swedish have a penchant for commercial bubble -pop. Although they didn't win the Swedish finalsfor the Eurovision Songcontest, according to the Swedish youth they deserved so. Easy and comfortablepop that, although not setting the world on fire, could steal the hearts of many in Europe. In two weeksthe single climbed up to no. 1 of the Swedish national charts and sales have exceeded platinum.

Chico Hablas - Events (LP) (Mercury) GermanyPubl. and master owner Phonogram Hamburg, Tel: 40-308703.Musical poetry, composed, arranged and produced by guitarist/keyboard player Chico Hables (even thealbum design and the beautiful artwork plus the short stories on the back sleeve are by him). Nine in-strumental pieces based on and inspired by historical events ('Stanley & Livingstone') and personal ex-periences and impressions ('Los Voladores'; 'Flight Over Peru'). A very talented musician who translateshis stories through an impressive spectrum of acoustic & electric sounds.

Due to a very unfortunate mistake last week's Air-play Top 50 appeared to be the one of issue 15.Although the information as stated in last week'ssingles guide was correct with regards to posi-tions etc., the corresponding airplay chart was notthe contact one. We hope this has not caused toomany inconveniences for those basing theirprogrammes on our compilations.

In the meantime Madonna has this week bestplayed single in Europe as Live To Tell moves inits 3rd week from 5 to 1 and puts the 5 week charttopper Absolute Beginners (the longest airplaytopper of this year) back to no. 2. It is Madonna'sfirst airplay topping single since last year's IntoThe Groove,

Peter Gabriel's latest single Sledgehammerpicked up a considerable amount of airplay thisweek and many love its soulful leanings; in its 2ndweek the single climbs from 19 to 8.

The highest airplay entry has Sade with hernew single Never As Good As The First Time. Itis the 3rd single from the Promise album, follow-ing earlier hits Is It A Crime, that entered at 15 inthe Airplay Top 50 the beginning of this year, andThe Sweetest Taboo (entering at 14 in the AirplayTop 50). Second best entry this week for PeteWylie, that wicked sinner with his obsession forthe popsong in grandiose style. Sinful! enters at34 after good airplay in England and some tipsfrom the Continental correspondents.

Yet another track is released from DireStraits' best selling European album of 1985Brother In Arms, entitled Your Latest Trick. If wecounted right this is already their 5th from that al-bum (including the CD single Brothers In Arms)and the band just broke another record in the Eng-lish charts by having their album for the 50th con-secutive in the Top 10. This has only happenedwith 8 albums before now.

After the worldwide success of The NeverEnding Story single Limahl comes with his newsingle in over a year. Entitled Love In Your Eyes,it was again produced by Giorgio Moroder and tosay it honestly: it is a bit too romantic for ourtastes. However, with the unmistakable Moroderstamp it will find its way to the charts very easily.

That wonderful talent Suzanne Vega is out

with a new single called Left Of Center, probablythe best track on the A&M soundtrack Pretty InPink. We hope this single will be picked up bymany of you. Also from that same OST comes thenew OMD single If You Leave. Already a hit inthe States and the UK will most likely be next.

The production sound of Jimmy Jam and Ter-ry Lewis is firmly entrenched in today's disco/popcharts. Their cool and spare mark can be hearedon the latest albums of Force M.D.'s, Janet Jack-son, Alexander O'Neill' and Patty Austin. This indemand team can also be heard on the S.O.S.Band's latest single The Finest. Already a hugehit in the UK and now also slowly taking off on

the continent as well. Check them out!If you have room left on your playlist don't for-

get to add the new singles of Blancmange (/ CanSee It), Diana Ross (Experience) and PhilipBailey's latest Nile Rodger's produced State OfThe Heart.

George Michael has his first European charttopper with A Different Corner (Careless Whisperstuck at 3 in the Hot 100 october 1984), puttingAbsolute Beginners back to no. 2. Living Doll isnow at 7 and that is utterly utterly good!

Other moves in the Hot 100 for Simple Minds(11-23), Samantha Fox (12-22) and Sam Cooke(16-45).

HOOK HEAVY WAXAs you may know by now, Wax combines the mu-sical and songwriting skills of Andrew Gold, theCalifornian singer/songwriter and GrahamGouldman, once of 10 CC and way back involvedin the hits of Yardbirds, The Hollies and Herman'sHermits. While their single Right Between TheEyes is still waiting to enter the Hot 100, the duohave released their first album, entitled MagneticHeaven, this week. It has become a hook heavyalbum with an overwhelming amount of catchysongs. The whole of side 1 has hit feel in everygroove and we urge you to check out Hear NoEvil, danceable and full of good moods, ShadowsOf Love with its E.L.O.-like vocals and hearingBall And Chain over again, it is unbelievable thatthis powerful pop single failed to make impact lastyear. We also like Systematic, the first track on theB-side. Let's give them a chance.

For those in favour of roots pock 'n' roll werecommend the 2nd album of The Del -Lordswith their EMI America album Johnny ComesMarching Home, an album that we tipped a fewweeks back. Operating in the basic setting of gui-tars, drums and bass, the band impresses most intracks like Heaven, Love Lies Dying (Del Fuegos-like) and Against My Will with its country lean-ings. The production of Neil Geraldo (of PatBenatar's backing band) is immaculate and theband can surely heat up your airwaves.

On her latest album, Bonnie Tyler has chos-en the epic way. By teaming up with producer JimSteinman and with the help of musicians like RoyBitten and Max Weinberg (of E -Street Band fame)the album gets a full blown production sound andthat coupled with her thrilling voice makes this a

worthwhile listening experience. Including thehits If You Were A Woman, Loving You's A DirtyJob and Holding Out For A Hem, it further con-tains hit potentials like the Jim Steinman pennedRavishing and the R&B classic Band Of Gold.

Raised On Radio is the 11th album of theAmerican rock band Journey. The band is nowtrimmed down to a trio, still featuring the power-ful vocals of Steve Perry and the guitar works andkeyboards by Neal Schorr and Jonathan Cain. Theband always used to be strong in delivering powerballads and Girl Can't Help It, the opening trackof the LP, is a good example. We also like BeGood To Yourself, the uptempo solid rocker Posi-tive Touch and the title track.

After having appeared in the Levi's 501 ads,22 years after his fatal death, Sam Cooke is inthe middle of everyone's attention with the charm-ing Wonderful ifbrld. RCA released a doublecompilation album, digitally remastered and assuch a wonderful introduction for the uninitiated. It contains all his best songs like Chain Gang,Cupid, Twistin' The Night Away and You Send Me.A legend lives on.

Ry Cooder wrote the musical score to thesoundtrack of the film Crossroads out in Europesoon. An album full of blues traditionals andsome original compositions by Cooder himself. After the Paris Texas and Alamo Bay scores, itproves that Cooder is a much in demandcomposer.

A new no. 1 in the Hot 100 as the 4 weekschart topper Rocky IV is dethroned this week byRolling Stones.

TV 6 REACHESVID CLIP DEAL

Only two months after its launchFrance's TV6 has reached agreementwith record industry body SNEP onpayments for video clip use. Similaragreements are expected shortly withLa Cinq and Tele Monte Carlo, pay-tvservice Canal Plus having concludeda clip deal back in 1984.

Under the terms of the TV6 agree-ment, which takes account of thechannel's theoretical geographicalcoverage, payments will be no lessthan 4,000 FF (£372) per clip perscreening.

However, there is still no agree-ment between SNEP and the state-controlled tv channels, which con-tinue to regard record industry de-mands as excessive. With one sidemaintaining that clips are a form ofdisguised record promotion, and theother unlikely to settle for anythingless than the 4,000 FF basis estab-lished with the Canal Pius and TV6agreements, the chances of an earlyresolution to the dispute appear slim.

ITALIAN RECORD INDUSTRY ON THE UP DUTCH SALES BEST SINCE 1980CD's Cause For Optimism 11.3% INCREASE IN TURNOVER

by VittorioAfter several years of a downwardturnover spiral, the Italian record in-dustry found real reason for optimismin 1985, despite national economicproblems.

Last years's turnover, at retailprice level, hit a £106.5 million markfor records and prerecorded tapes, a6.1% improvement on the figure post-ed in 1984. A 10% overall price in-crease levied by the government toease Italian economic pressure clear-ly helped the turnover bottom line, but it affected only the October -December quarter's trade.

In unit terms, too, there was an in-crease of 4% up to 38.712 million, asagainst the 37,114 million of 1984. In-dustry leaders, most of them based inMilan now, see the statistics as being"distinctly positive".

The most significant trend is seenin the Compact Disc sector, Italyreflecting the action in virtually allpan-European territories. CD unit -sales were up by 52.8% to just over amillion units, last year and this factor.gave the industry its biggest boost.'But prerecorded cassettes were up to11.4% on 1984, and LPs marginallyup, by 1.6%. Singles, however, weredown by 6.1% on the previous year.

In repertoire divisions, interna-tional pop product gained 14.4% onits 1984 market share, while Italiandomestic pop was down 2.4% and

Castelliclassical down 9.1%.

However Italian record companiesput out /2% fewer new releases lastyear. And 1.8% of the total turnoverwas from the U.S.A. For Africa char-ity fund-raiser product.

AMERICAN ACTSCANCEL TOURS

Several major US acts have an-nounced that they are cancelling Eu-ropean Tours this summer because ofterrorist actions taking place in Eu-rope. The artists concerned includePrince, Starship, The ManhattanTransfer and Patti Labelle. The acts'agents feel that the Libyan crisismakes it unsafe and unwise to appearin Europe as they could easily be-come a terrorist target, though mostfeel that the decisions are postpone-ments rather than outright cancel-lations.
