When the conversation turns to open-air theatre in Germany, the Bad Hersfelder Festival is certainly among the first to come to mind. Its high artistic standard and unique festival venue in the ruin of a 12th-century church – Europe’s largest Romanesque church ruin – make for an unparalleled theatre experience. The specific theatrical character of the venue is even more impressive than that of Salzburg's famous Felsenreitschule or the Papal Palace in Avignon. No wonder it attracts an international ensemble and highly acclaimed actors and actresses from theatre, film and television, who have been bringing major works of world literature to life here every year since 1951. The festival is set to become more international under its new director Holk Freytag. The international exchange program EUROPOLIS 2050 will be shown in a reconstructed factory building with state-of-the-art technical equipment alongside the popular performances in the historic setting of the church ruin. VII- The excursionAs part of the 2nd International Theatre Youth Forum, an excursion has been organized by the Bad Hersfelder Festival to the former American observation post OP Alpha, known today as Point Alpha, which was NATO`s most important sentinel during the Cold War. Today, Point Alpha is a memorial. The entire unique complex bears witness to the power struggle played out between two political systems, and at the same time offers the chance to absorb history in an authentic setting.

VIII – The Summer Academy Europolis 2050 is the European program of the Bad Hersfelder Festival consisting of the 2nd International Theatre Youth Forum and the summer academy is a series of public panel discussions and debates that is organized for the 2nd time as part of the Bad Hersfelder Festival. Reknown scientists and academics debate on many different aspects the future of Europe. How does the coming generation reach the goal of a united Europe despite all the differences? How does the young generation deal with the cultural heritage? What are the expectations of the young people, what is expected from the older generation? Which role Europe plays on the international stage? How do we reach a common European identity? These are some of the aspects that has been discussed during the summer academy. The Summer Academy is presided by Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. Jörn Rüsen. Invited guest speaker: Prof. Egon Bahr.

IX – Talk with the ensemble from Hamlet

Two discussions were more specifically targeted to the young participants of the Youth Forum: > What is our hope? Tuesday 28th June 2011> Power of commemoration Thursday 30th June 2011

Following the performance of Hamlet, the young people met with some of the actors who performed in the adaptation of Hamlet by Jean-Claude Berutti, as part of the festival program.

7. Comments

It was really nice to see so many young people working together.

This is one of my best trips ever. I have got many new friends and I got inspired to continue with theater. I will, never forget this.

It’s been extremely learning. And also understanding and get to know people from other cultures have really made my look upon Europe change.

Very educational in many ways.

It was very different and good. This experience will change my life.

To realize a performance in such a short notice and to work hard for it was really exciting and usefull for my theater.

Got to know amazing people, enjoyed from the best plays. I love every part of it.

This was one the best 10 days of my life.

I’am not an actor and acting makes a lot of fun.

I have never done such theater work before, everything was nice. Everything was perfect. It would be perfect if ETC gives a chance to participate more than 1 year.
