Applications are invited for the position of

Full Professor of Measurement Technology and Instrumentation Science

in the group “Signal and System Technology”, of the Department of Applied Physics which will become available on 1 September.

A broad experience in applied physics and, in particular, in instrumentation problems concerning advanced measurement and signal processing equipment is required. Experience should preferably have been obtained, at least partly, in a field of activity other than academic education.

At the moment, the group “Signal and System Technology” consists of the following sections : Pattern Recognition, Signal Processing, Simulation of Systems, Micro Circuits and a laboratory measurement group. Three full professors arecurrently attached to the group, of whom one holds a dual post at the Departments of Mathematics and of Applied Physics. In total, the group includes fifteen scientific staff members.

Specifically, the successful candidate will be responsible for the research in the Pattern Recognition section. Starting from the research at present carried out there (pattern recognition and, in particular, image processing), he will be required, in cooperation with the present staff, to extend and guide the section’sresearch programme. He has to maintain and stimulate the group’s interest ininstrumentation problems, with the emphasis on the role of measurement in the acquisition of scientific knowledge. Moreover, he must be able to develop new fields of research. In order to bring new techniques, developed by the group, to the attention of those outside, it is necessary that he has a natural ability for communicating with people.

Apart from an overall responsibility for the entire educational programme of the group (a total of about ten semester courses, the supervision of research for bachelor, master and doctoral degrees and some laboratory courses), an active participation in about four semester courses in physics will be expected. The candidate should possess good didactic qualities.

Applications, including a curriculum vitae, an account of professional experience and publications, and the names of two referees should be sent to :

de heer prof.ir. B. P. Th. Veltman, Lorentzweg 1, 2628 CJ Delft. Tel. 015-785037where further information concerning the post and the department can be

    obtained.

Europhysics News is the official journal of the European Physical Society that comprises 28 National Societies, Academies and Groups, over 3000 Individual Ordinary Members and 30 Associate Members. Governing bodies of EPS are the General Meeting, Council and an elected Executive Committee responsible for detailed policy. EPS promotes the collaboration of physicists throughout Europe and encourages all aspects of international exchange in physics. EPS awards scholarships for research and studies in different countries. EPS publishes, in addition to Europhysics News, Europhysics Conference Abstracts, Europhysics Education News and the Proceedings of its General Conferences. Individual Ordinary Members receive Europhysics News (subscription for non-Members: 75 Sw. Fr./a), substantial rebates on many publications and pay reduced fees at conferences. Application for membership is made through the permanent Secretariat in Geneva. Annual subscription for members of a National Society from 1 January, 1980 is 32 Sw.Fr.
