EUSA EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING 03 - 2006

The 3rd EUSA Executive Committee Meeting in 2006 took place in Paris, France from October 6-7, 2006. The meet-ing started with welcome speeches from Mr. Jose Savoye, the President of the French University Sports Federa-tion (FNSU), Mr. Henri Sérandour, the President and Mr. Claude Gallien, the Vice President of the French Olympic Committee (FOC). The EUSA President Alberto Gualtieri welcomed all the members of the Executive Committee and thanked the President of the FNSU and FOC for the organisation of the meeting. The following decisions were made at the meeting:

BEST UNIVERSITY AND FAIR PLAY AWARDSThe awards for the Best University and Fair Play for the EUC will be awarded from 2007 on. The awards will be presented at the EUSA GA where Rectors of the awarded institutions will be invited to the assembly.

CONVENTION FOR THE EUC ORGANISERSThe Convention for the organisers of EUSA events in 2007 will be organised in Valencia, Spain on Friday, December 3, 2006 in the afternoon. Up to two representatives from the Or-ganising Committees EUC 2007 will be invited to the Conven-tion, together with the newly appointed Technical Delegates.

EUSA SYMPOSIUM The EUSA Symposium will be held in St. Petersburg / RUS in September 2007.

EUSA GENERAL ASSEMBLY 2006The 2006 General Assembly of the European University Sports Association will take place in Valencia, Spain from De-cember 1 to 3, 2006. All EUSA members are welcomed to participate but are required to register by the end of October.

MEETINGSDanube Rectors’ ConferenceDuring the Danube Rectors’ Conference (DRC), the EUSA President and Secretary General took the opportunity and met with Mr. Winckler, the President of the European University Association, Mr. Sovic, the Mayor of Maribor, Mr. Rozman, the Rector of the University of Maribor, Mr. Zupan, the Slovene Minister of Higher Education, and Mr.

European Olympic CommitteeThe President Alberto Gualtieri met on October 22 the EOC President and IOC Member Mr. Patrick Hickey, in the pres-ence of the IOC Executive Committee Member Mr. Mario Pescante. The Meeting took place at the European Olympic Committee head office located in Rome. During the meet-ing, the President Gualtieri has explained the report, the goals and the future programs of the EUSA as well as the duties carried out so far. The President Hickey has shown interest in our Association in particular towards the Sports activity aimed at the University competence that represents undoubtedly part of the European life and it is furthermore a fundamental element for our cultural growth and for a full development of Europe. Mr. Hickey could approve the EOC official recognition of EUSA, on demand of the EC of the latter. In order to explore the areas and the activities shared by the EOC and the EUSA, Mr. Hickey and the President Gualtieri have arranged a new Meeting that will take place in the second half of next November in Dublin.

European Sport for All CongressOn 12-15 October 2006 in Portorose Slovenia President Gual-tieri has taken part on 1st European Sport for All Congress. The meeting, opened by dr. Milan Zver Minister of Edu-cation and Sport, Republic of Slovenia, has registered a large participation of various European organizations, like ENGSO, BVLO, CESS, ISCA UBAE, USEC and others.The Congress through various Seminars and Workshops has discussed many aspects of the important movement of Sport for All in Europe particularly in respect of the physical activity of youth.The Congress was concluded with a Presidential meeting among all the Presidents of the participating Associations where President Gualtieri, after giving a more detailed presentation of EUSA has analysed the possibility to col-laborated in future with the other organisations, mainly ISCA and CESS, in all those areas where would be possi-ble joint activities without creating overlapping for a better promotion on Sport for All among young people.

SLOVENIAThe 2006 Danube Rectors’ Conference which took place from September 20 to 23 in Maribor, Slovenia, attracted over 300 attendants from European Univer-sities. The conference was hosted by the University of Maribor. One of the keynote speakers was also Mr. Alberto Gualtieri, the President of the European University Sports Association (EUSA), who presented the role of EUSA in the organisation of the university sports.

FISUFISU NEWS• The Heads of Delegation meet-

ing for Winter Universiade 2007 took place in Torino in September. The purpose of the meeting was to check how the venue prepara-tion is going on as regards both the structures in Torino and the mountain venues. The delegates visited Bardonecchia, Cesana San Sicario, Pragelato and Torino’s ice stadiums.

• Up to now, 18 World University Championships have already been attributed for 2008, 16 of them to EUSA member federations. The remaining sports open for 2008 are: Boxing, Flatwater Canoeing, Wildwater Ca-noeing, Equestrian, Golf, Field Hockey, Wrestling, Match Racing (Sailing), Waterski, Softball, Squash, Sailing and Woodball.

CONTINENTAL ORGANISATIONSThe city of Tshwane, formerly known as Pretoria, Capital City of South Africa hosted the 4th FASU Games (African University Games). 15 delegations took part at the games, which were supported by the highest regional and national authorities. The program of competitions included 11 sport disciplines. Dr. Malumbete Ralethe, FISU Assessor and Honorary President of SASSU (South African Student Sports Union) was very pleased to welcome also a large delegation from FISU and EUSA representatives.

The University of Pretoria, the largest University of South Africa (34,000 students) has provided sports facilities of very high standards, such as the High Performance Cent-er, centre where all South African top athletes and teams are getting prepared for the international competitions. At the same time, the election of the new Executive Com-mittee of FASU was held. The newly elected president of FASU became Hassan CHIKH (ALG).

EUROPEAN UNIVERSITY CHAMPIONSHIPS 2006All nine European University Championships, organised in 2006, have successfully finished. We are very proud to announce, that the participation has increased from 1,530 participants in 2005 to 2,200 participants in 2006, which represents 44% growth. The number of participat-ing universities increased from 200 in 2005 to 255 in 2006 (28% increase). 26 European countries participated at the championships in 2006. Universities from France partici-pated at all 9 championships, Germany, Croatia, Poland and Portugal sent their teams to 8 championships, and the other countries a bit less. Universities from Sweden and Lithuania participated at the EUCs for the first time.

EUC HANDBALLThe 1st European University Hand-ball Championship was organised from June 26 to July 1 in Besançon, France. Eleven men and seven women university teams from 11 European countries participated at the event. The first European Uni-versity Champions became University of Besancon in men and Piotrkow Trybunalski University in women competi-tion. EUC ROWINGThe record number of 350 participants, representing 52 Universities from 13 European countries took part at the 2nd European University Rowing Championship. The championship took place in Brive La Gaillarde, France, from September 1 to 2, 2006. The tournament took place on the CSN Brive facilities. The overall standard in most of events was high and competition for medals was excellent. Medals went to 12 different countries.

EUC FUTSALThe 3rd European University Fut-sal Championship took place in Novi Sad, Serbia, from July 16 to 24, 2006. 14 male university teams from 12 countries participated at the championship, which was or-ganised by the University Sports Association of Serbia. Competition took place at the Sports and Business Centre Vojvodina. Organising Committee took a large number of activities in order to promote the championship in the best possi-ble manner. All major newspapers wrote about this event, while other media broadcasted it daily. Games were played in sport hall that has a 1000 people capacity. The Tampare University team, Finland, was specially awarded for a fair play and Milan Rakic was elected the best shooter. The next Futsal EUC will take place in Koper, Slovenia in July 2007.

EUC BADMINTON

The city of Lisbon (Portugal) was the venue of the 3rd Eu-ropean University Badminton Cham-pionship. More than 150 students from 13 countries responded to the invitation of the University of Lis-bon and came to the

championship, which occurred between 12th and 16th of July 2006. The tournament took place at the Sports Uni-versity of Lisbon. The organisation of the event was on a high quality level and set a good standard for the next organisers. The EUC 2007 will take place in St. Petersburg in Russia.

EUC BEACH VOLLEYBALLThe 3rd European University Beach-Volleyball Championship took place from June 23rd - 26th, 2006 in Latina, Italy. 22 men and 17 women university teams from 17 European countries took part at the championship, and this repre-sents a new record according to the number of participat-ing countries on the EUC. The championship was organ-ised by the Italian University Sports Association (CUSI) together with the CUS Roma. The preliminary round of the tournament was played in a round robin pool play, but the main draw was played with an official double elimination 32-bracket. The participant’s level was very good: there were some experienced players from FIVB World Tour

Qualification events and some competitors who played the World University Championship in Protaras 2007.

EUC BASKETBALL12 women and 16 men teams par-ticipated at the 6th European Uni-versity Basketball Championship, which was organised by the Uni-versity of Minho Sports Hall and Multiusos Sports Hall in the beauti-ful Portuguese city of Guimaraes. The championship started on 11th and finished on 16th of July 2006. The organisers used a big sport complex, “Multiusos”, with two basketball courts as main venue. All courts were well equipped and had the highest technical standards, so the conditions for all players were excellent. University teams from Lithuania took part at the EUC for the first time in the history of EUSA, and won one gold and one bronze medal. The next EUC will be organised in Geneva / SUI.

EUC TENNISThis year’s major event EUC 2006 that combined the European Uni-versity Championships in Volley-ball, Football, Tennis, and the Wa-ter-Polo Cup, took place in Eind-hoven, the Netherlands from July

2-9, 2006. 16 teams from 12 countries participated in the men’s championship and 11 teams from 8 countries in the women championship. Totally, 27 teams participated from 13 countries. There were 6 men players with current ATP ranking (the highest at 660) and 2 women players with cur-rent WTA ranking (the highest 664). The 3rd EUC tennis was held on 11 artificial grass pitches located at walking distance from the student sport centre. The next EUC Ten-nis will be held in Moscow / Russia.

EUC FOOTBALLThis year’s championship took place in Eindhoven, Netherlands, from July 2-9, 2006, and was combined with two other sports championships, Ten-nis and Volleyball. The organisers of this major and biggest event this year was Eindhoven Technical University. The 4th EUC Football was held at the football pitches of sport centre “De Hondsheuvels”, which is a 5 minutes walk from the Student Sports Centre. There were five official size pitches available. At the centre, 14 changing rooms and decentralised cafeteria was available for the compet-ing teams. At the tournament, there were 14 university teams in men competition and 7 university teams in wom-en competition. In the women’s finals, the University of Zu-rich defeated the Groningen & Hanze University with 4:1, and in the men’s final Halig University beat the University of Camerino 3:2.

EUC VOLLEYBALL 6th European University Volleyball Championship was organised in the city of Eindhoven from July 2-9, 2006, alongside EUC Football and EUC Tennis. This was the first major EUSA multi-sport event. This

year’s women’s championship included thirteen teams, with the men’s team increased to nineteen teams. These is by no means a clear record participation in EUC Volley-ball. The 6th EUC Volleyball took place in the three sport halls of Student Sport Centre, two of which were used for matches. The other was available for warming-up and training purposes. In the men’s competition Eindhoven (NED) won, with la Sapienta Roma (ITA) the runners up, and in the men’s competition Eindhoven (NED) were win-ners, with Surgut (RUS) second.
