FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: ANNOUNCING THE 2009/10 European Union Literary Award Shortlist The European Union, participating EU member states and Jacana Media are pleased to announce the shortlist for the 2009/10 European Union Literary Award. Jury Chair, Rehana Rossouw, comments, “The standard of writing by some entrants this year was incredibly high, which made the judges’ task of short-listing manuscripts quite easy. Some entrants stood head and shoulders above the rest. This made the task of choosing the winner more difficult, however. But our winner’s work is extraordinarily compelling – both the plot and the writer’s approach to telling a story. “The jury also commends Delight Buthelezi for her work, The Sunless Centre.” The shortlist manuscripts for the 2009/10 European Literary Award are: Fine Land by Norman Baines Deeper than Colour by James Clelland Master Land by Claire Robertson

ANNOUNCING THE 2009/10 European Union Literary Award Shortlist

The European Union, participating EU member states and Jacana Media are pleased to announce the shortlist for the 2009/10 European Union Literary Award.

Jury Chair, Rehana Rossouw, comments, “The standard of writing by some entrants this year was incredibly high, which made the judges’ task of short-listing manuscripts quite easy. Some entrants stood head and shoulders above the rest. This made the task of choosing the winner more difficult, however. But our winner’s work is extraordinarily compelling – both the plot and the writer’s approach to telling a story.

The shortlist manuscripts for the 2009/10 European Literary Award are:

Fine Land by Norman Baines Deeper than Colour by James Clelland Master Land by Claire Robertson

This year’s jury comprised Rehana Rossouw, adjunct creative writing lecturer at Wits University and features editor at the Financial Mail, Craig McKenzie, Professor of English at the University of Johannesburg and acclaimed author Mandla Langa.

The winner will be announced during the Cape Town Book Fair at the award ceremony on Sunday, 1 August at Cape Town’s historic Old Town House on Greenmarket Square.

The European Union Literary Award has at its core the ideal of promoting new South African literature that speaks not only to South Africans but also to an international audience.The award is the first of its kind in the world and is supported by various

member states of the European Union.Now in its sixth year, The European Union Literary Award is proving to be a driving force in uncovering new and talented South African fiction writers.

- The winner of the 2009/10 award receives a R25 000 cash prize. Jacana Media publishes the winner’s novel, and Exclusive Books, South Africa’s largest book retailer, includes the winning novel on its annual Homebru list.
