The European Nursing Module (ENM) Networkwas founded in 1994 by a group of educationalinstitutions around Europe. The Network offersbasic nurse education programmes leading tothe right to practice nursing in their specificcountry. The principle behind the Network wasto develop a Module, agreed and accepted byall member institutions that could be accessedby student nurses studying within those pro-grammes. Students would have the opportuni-ty, within that Module, for an exchange with an-other member institution, allowing experienceof a health care system within another Euro-pean country and of the social and cultural nur-sing issues within that country.The Institute of Nursing was accepted into theENM Network in June 2014.

– To develop the students’ understanding ofthe concept of culture.

– To develop the students’ understanding ofEuropean and professional cultural issueswhich will promote and enhance health careby individuals practising in a range of set-tings.

– To enable students to recognise the interna-tional dimension of professional nursingknowledge and health care.

– To develop the students’ awareness, under-standing and acceptance of cultural differ-ences.

– To develop the students’ awareness of, andrespect for, clients’ individual cultures.

– To develop the students’ understanding ofthe influence of historical, philosophical, eth-ical, economic, political and professional

factors on their own and others’ professionalcultures.

– To develop the students’ awareness of pro-fessional culture and role, and an increasingawareness of their own cultural identity.

– The student will have developed her/hisawareness of the influence of culture onhealth, welfare and professional nursing.

– The student will value the sharing of multi-cultural knowledge and experience.

- The student will demonstrate an awarenessand tolerance of other cultures.

- The student will reflect on her/his values andattitudes relating to nursing and health care.

- The student will share her/his learning expe-riences with colleagues.

- The student will gain understanding of, andempathy for, the experience of “being astranger”.

- The student will develop her/his understand-ing of how nursing cultures define nursingand the nurses’ role.

The theoretical setting contains discussions,lectures, experiential learning exercises and re-flexion. Clinical practice visits will be in the fieldsof general acute, psychiatric and geriatric nur-sing.

Target group: Bachelor of Nursing Students inthe second half of their program. The Module isheld in English. (Recommended Level B2)

Approximate student expensesAccommodation for 2 weeks: 100 Euro with ahost family; 400 Euro in youth hostel/backpa-ckersMeals per day: 15 – 20 EuroTransport: up to 150 Euro + cost to/ fromZurich Airport by train 15 Euro

Housing / LocationThe ZHAW endeavours to find a host family ora room in a backpacker or youth hostel. Winter-thur is a very pretty, small town 20 km from Zu-rich. The cities of Zurich, Berne and Lucerne aswell as the Swiss mountains with its Skiing re-sorts are easily reachable by public transport.

Requirements for attending clinical visitsMandatory vaccinations: Tetanus, Polio, Hepa-titis B updatedHealth Insurance: “European Health InsuranceCard” for EU-Country members; adequateHealth insurance for non-EU-Country memberscompulsory. Liability insurance for all studentsrecommended.

The exchange programme is aimed at studentsin their 6th semester.
