ITALIAN LANDSCAPE WORKSHOP with NINA WEISS

at THE MONASTERO SS. ANNUNZIATA TODI and LA TORRETTA, CASPERIA

June 17th – 27th with field trips to Orvieto & Tivoli

The Italian Landscape Workshop with Nina Weiss is a wonderful opportunity for students to immerse themselves in the study of the classically beautiful Italian landscape. Designed for artists and art lovers at all artistic levels, this workshop allows students working in various mediums an intensive exploration of the romantic Italian landscape surrounding the medieval hilltop towns of Todi and Casperia. Located in Umbria, in the province of Perugia, Todi is a sophisticated town of gothic palazzi, narrow winding streets, and a magnificent central piazza. Vineyards, olive groves and sunflower beds surround the town. Casperia, an hour south of Todi in the Lazio province, offers us the striking mountainous landscape of the Sabine Hills. Working plein-aire, students will learn to extract their visions from these rich landscapes through sketches, drawing, painting, and photographic reference. Students enjoy the comfort and ease of hospitable lodgings, the instruction of a knowledgeable and passionate teacher, and the inspiration of the verdant Italian countryside.

THE WORKSHOP Every morning, students will be transported into the beautiful landscape surrounding Todi. We will spend this time in the field learning to recognize and capture elements of the landscape, and how to distill these crucial elements into drawings. Studies will begin with black and white compositional exercises, and progress to tonal studies of basic landscape forms. Use of color will then be introduced, including an overview of color theory. Emphasis will be on composition, gesture, technique, and complex color development. In the early afternoon, we will meet in the studio as a group to discuss and further explore our paintings, drawings and sketches. One very special day will be spent high on a hill at the farm of a local Umbrian family overlooking the Tiber River and their crops of sunflower fields. A workshop will be devoted to study within Todi of its’ unique architecture and perspectives. In the late afternoon, students will be free to continue their studies, or use this time to further explore their environment. There is a maximum of twelve students per workshop, ensuring each student focused and individual instruction and attention.

BUNRATTY CASTLE Bunratty Castle appeared in its present structure around 1425. It is an extensively restored authentic Medieval castle set in an Irish Folk Park on the banks of the Rathy River in the small town of Bunratty. We will visit the castle in the evening for the world renowned Bunratty Medieval Banquet. Our evening begins with a short walk through the park to the tune of a kilted piper. Costumed Ladies in Waiting serve mead wine in the Upper Great Hall, accompanied by Irish Harp music and vocals. In the Banquet Hall, we are seated at long oak tables surrounded by authentic tapestries and glowing candlelight. After a hearty authentic four course Medieval banquet, a concert of harp, fiddle, and choral Irish and Medieval music is presented.

LODGING In the Medieval town of Todi, students are housed in working 13th century Monastery only a short walk from Todi’s main square. Stunning outward views of the Umbrian landscape can be seen, as well as peaceful interior views of a spectacular garden and two courtyards. Antiques and original frescoes lend this quiet, spacious monastery a unique historical flavor. The rooms are simple and comfortable. Lodging is based on double occupancy. In Casperia, we will enjoy the comfortable architecturally enhanced and restored 15th century palazetto of la Torretta, a Bed and Breakfast lodging. Each room has a breathtaking view of the town’s terra cotta rooftops and cobbled streets, overlooking the beautiful Sabine Hills. An intimate outdoor terrace invites you to relax and soak up the sun. In this peaceful village, students will experience a relaxed daily rhythm. All rooms in both locations have en suite accommodations.

ARAN ISLANDS The Aran Islands slumber 30 miles off Irelands’ coast in the Atlantic Ocean. Protected for centuries by their isolation, the islands are still steeped in traditional Irish culture. The Aran Islands carry the Irish names of Inishmore (the big island), Inishmaan (the middle island) and Inisheer (the eastern island). The smallest of the islands is Inisheer, no bigger than 2 by 1 square miles. It is rich in Gaelic culture, heritage, andbreathtaking scenery. We will see ancient ruins (including a sunken church and a crumbling hilltop castle) from prehistoric and early Christian times, sheep, donkeys, ponies, thatched cottages with wild flowers growing around them – and beautiful coastal views. After our half hour ferry ride we reach Inisheer and its network of narrow stone walled lanes. Look for the traditional Irish fishing boat, (Currach), wander the lanes, explore ruins, relax on the beach; and find an authentic Aran Island sweater knit by a local to take home. There are several pubs and tea rooms on the island; a gift store selling traditional Irish goods; and a small grocery store.

GALWAY The city center of Galway lies on the banks of the River Corrib. The streets surrounding the river are narrow and winding, reflecting the medieval heart of this once walled city. Colorfully carved signs announce pubs and shops; rows of window boxes line the streets. Antique and knitwear shops abound, and bargains can also be found in other locally made goods such as linens and ceramics. A visit to the Galway City Center Museum will enrich your experience with an in depth look at the history of this important city. For lunch, you can sample hearty Irish fare in a sidewalk café or restaurant, or relax over an afternoon tea. Relax and watch the swans on the wharf and bridges surrounding the famous Galway Bay.

LEENANE Leenane (Irish An Líonán - the filling pool), is situated beside Ireland's only fjord, Killary Harbour, on the northern edge of Connemara. Be prepared to hold your breath in awe as we approach Leenane…..the views are spectacular from all directions! This pretty, old world village lies nestled between the Mwelrea, Devil's Mother and Maamturk Mountains and faces onto Killary Harbour. Mingle with the local fisherman and sheep farmers in An Carraig, Gaynors or Hamiltons Bars and you will get a real flavor of a by-gone era. Easy hiking is found along the Western Way trail, which takes us up along the sides of the Harbor and affords stunning views. For a historical and informative interpretation of the local culture and tradition take a stroll up the road to the Leenane Cultural Centre where history and culture is uniquely presented, including the history and traditions of the local wool industry. Warming teas are available.

ATTRACTIONS TODI Explore Todi’s history and architecture: Etruscan-Roman walls surround the city, and no less than three 13th century palazzos converge in the central Piazza del Popolo. There are six historically significant churches to explore, as well as the Museo Civico Pinacoteca, and the 13th century Duomo. The town is small enough to be familiar and peaceful, but big enough to offer an enticing variety of shops featuring the locally produced linen and ceramics. Many other shops offer the finest in Italian leather goods, linens, specialty foods, jewelry, and clothing. At night, join the locals on a tradition-al passeggiata, and seek out the town’s best gelato. There’s always something happening in the Piazza del Popolo! Shopping, sightseeing, and excursions into the countryside are sure to enhance your experience of life in and around Todi.

CASPERIA Casperia offers complete tranquility in a traffic free village of intimate winding cobblestone streets. Less than an hour from Rome, Casperia allows you to immerse yourself in an untouched medieval village, practically unchanged by the passing of time. Take a break from your work and explore the village, meet the locals; and relax in the sun of an out-door café. After dinner concerts in the Piazza invite you to linger, sip a drink, and enjoy the night air. Join the locals to experience the nightly beauty of sunset from the main piazza overlooking the Sabine hills and valleys. Olive oil from Casperia is said to be some of the most flavorful in Italy.

ATTRACTIONS The main attraction in Ireland is its astounding natural beauty. The wild seas, abundant, lush green pastureland, rocky islands, thatched cottages; wildflowers, endless stone fences and mysterious raised bogs create a landscape unlike any other. Each of our locations provides us with unique views of these beautiful landscapes. Our bus transports through Connemara guide us through the wild, rugged and beautiful landscapes of this region, giving us glimpses of untouched Irish countryside.

CLIFDEN A stunning example of this breathtaking landscape can be seen along the Sky Roads’ ten- mile loop outside the town of Clifden. There, we can freely explore on foot or by bicycle the picturesque ruins of the Clifden Castle. Clifden Castle was built by John D'Arcy (1785-1839, founder of Clifden) in a Gothic Revival style in the early 19th century. The castle was abandoned during the great famine of the 1840s. Clifden is surrounded by the majestic Twelve Bens mountain range and the boulder-strewn estuary of the River Owenglin. Its two main streets are full of lively shops featuring the best of Ireland’s local wares, pubs, and foodstuffs. Many of Ireland’s leading musicians pass through Clifden; and the pubs are full of music at night. This is the place to hear some amazing traditional Irish folk music and mingle with the crowds!

ORVIETO Orvieto is a charming medieval city situ-ated high above the plains on a dramatic outcropping of “tuffa” (volcanic rock). The cliff is honeycombed with defensive caves and passageways. Tours of this underground city are recommended! Orvieto is the site of rich Etruscan history and archeological finds which are housed in the amazing Archeolog-ical Museum. Orvietos’ Duomo is one of the most striking in Italy, including the Chapel of St. Brozio, featuring Signorellis’ Apocolypse. The world famous “Orvieto Classico” is produced here! Sample a cup after taking a break from exploring the many shops of Orvieto featuring locally crafted goods. TIVOLI A short drive from Casperia in the Lazio region is the fa-mous hill town of Tivoli. This charming town was once a favored resort of the ancient Romans, who left behind their sacred temples, still visible today. The town’s most famous sight is the Villa d’Este, a sumptuous country residence created in the 16th century. Its’ spectacular terraced gardens and moss-hung fountains will be our artistic inspiration for a day a field of sketching. The villa has a bookstore, a cafete-ria, and restaurant, all with spectacular views! The romantic grounds of the Villa Gregoriana can also be visited, includ-ing a hike down a lush ravine to view its’ famous waterfall. Take some time to stroll Tivoli’s main pedestrian shopping street through the center of town; stop for cappuccino; and explore the many great shopping opportunities.

FOOD Irish food has improved vastly since I first visited 30 years ago! The scones are still the best in the world, and the hearty “full Irish breakfast” needs to be seen to be believed: sausage, bacon, eggs, tomato, toast….and more. For a lighter version of breakfast, hearty Irish oatmeal is a favorite of mine. Buffet breakfast choices also usually include a selection of cereals, meats, cheeses and fruit and juices. We will dine in our hotels on gourmet locally produced food, prepared with the freshest and finest of ingredients, including many varieties of fresh seafood. Dinner might include a Seafood Chowder, Baked Salmon, and warm goat cheese on toast. A hearty seasonal plate of vegetables is always available “family style”, including the freshest potatoes and carrots. Lunches will be picnic-style including locally produced meats and Irish Farmhouse cheeses. For our meals out in Clifden, Roundstone and Galway’s pubs we can sample the typical (and wonderful!) Irish staples of Bangers & Mash, Irish Stew, and Fish & Chips. Our farewell dinner is a Medieval Banquet served on authentic crockery at the Bunratty Castle. Highlights of the meal include homemade mead wine, Irish stew, and traditional Irish soda bread, and authentic medieval harp and lute music.

THE WORKSHOP Our lodgings by the sea place us in the middle of some of the most stunning landscapes in Ireland. To allow for inclement weather there is studio space provided in each of our 4 primary lodgings. Each day’s Workshop will be spent learning to recognize and capture the elements of strong landscape composition, and how to distill these crucial elements into your drawings and paintings. Studies will begin with black and white compositional exercises, and progress to tonal studies of basic landscape forms. Use of color will then be introduced, including an overview of color theory. Emphasis will be on composition, gesture, tech-nique, and complex color development. Workshop times vary in length from morning to full day explorations. Afternoons will find us meeting in the studio as a group to discuss and further explore our work, or attending a demon-stration of materials and techniques. In the late afternoon, students will be free to continue their studies, or to use this time to further explore their environment. There is a maximum of twelve students per workshop, ensuring each student focused and individual instruction and attention. Mediums demonstrated may include Pastels, Graphite, Oils, Gouache, and Travel Sketching; as the class requires.

ITALIAN LANDSCAPE WORKSHOP with NINA WEISS

at THE MONASTERO SS. ANNUNZIATA TODI and LA TORRETTA, CASPERIA

June 17th – 26th with field trips to Orvieto & Tivoli
