European In-house Counsel SummitJanuary 23, 2014 • The Waldorf Hotel, London

INTRODUCTIONInternational Financial Law Review is returning for the second IFLR European In-house Counsel Summit in Londonon January 23, 2014. In its first year, over 250 in-house counsel from top European corporates (public and private)and UK and European-based banks met to discuss matters relating to financial law, including M&A, capital markets, liability management and competition.

The 2014 event is set to be even bigger. The European markets may not be as bright as the rest of the world yet, butdeal activity is increasing. Companies need to know their options for raising finance in the capital markets, how toget the best credit for acquisitions (including from alternative sources) and remind themselves of the role of offshorejurisdictions in such structuring.

However, the iron grip on expenses is unrelenting. Companies may be moving towards more financial market activ-ity, but in-house departments still need to cut costs and run on smaller staff numbers than pre-crisis. It has neverbeen more important to be pre-emptive, rather than reactive, despite these pressures.

As ever, it is essential to balance the short-term shareholder-friendly agendas of boards with longer risk manage-ment timelines.

The IFLR European In-house Counsel Summit will tackle these issues in a panel format. The programme has beendeveloped in conjunction with general counsel from top corporates and banks and will deliver an update on a rangeof legal and commercial issues that in-house counsel face on a daily basis.
