Language German Genre Drama

A small protestant village in Northern Germany at the advent of World War I: the pastor, the doctor and the baron rule over a society that is structured by conservative and hypocritical beliefs. The pastor has the children wear white ribbons as a reminder of their innocence and punishes them for trivial offenses. The doctor and the baron also play their role in exploiting and humiliating the villagers. When mysterious things happen, the teenagers of the village appear to be at the heart of something that seems like a ritual punishment.

With this film, Michael Haneke explores the origins of terrorism, be it of political or religious nature.

On one hand, there is the desert eating the land. On the other there is war. The village well has run dry. Trusting their instinct, most of the villagers leave and head South. Rahne, the only literate one, is heading East with his three children and Mouna, his wife. A few sheep, some goats and a dromedary, are their only riches. They are traveling through hostile lands, under a lethal sun. Set in Poland after World War II, the film tells the story of the friendship between an elder woman and a young man. Marta (Krystyna Janda), who suffers a fatal illness without knowing it, and who is married to an always busy countryside doctor, searches for happiness in the arms of the much younger man. They go swimming in the river, it is summer, and the air is full of the smell of sweet rush, which is also the smell of death, reiterating the leitmotiv of the film.

Their innocent relationship is just about to develop, when the young man, Boguś, drowns, entangled in the roots of sweet rush, which he wanted to pick for Marta.

The film is dedicated to the cinematographer Eduard Klosiński, late husband of Krystyna Janda, who died during the filming. His wife wrote a very personal monologue, which now constitutes the framework story of the film, further exploring the experience of death and the emotions connected with it.
