They played Crossley Heath from Halifax winning all their singles with Captain Will winning 4-2 against a higher rated player. In the semi-final, they played Netherhall School from Cumbria again winning all their singles for a 4-0 victory. In the final they lost to RGS Lancaster 5-1 with Monty remaining unbeaten in all of his singles matches. It is the best finish the school has had since the LTA brought in Regional Finals 4 years ago. The U13 team lost out to eventual winners St Marys from Newcastle in the semi-finals 4-2 with Louie winning his singles and teaming up with Daniel to win the doubles. U15 team Will, Monty, Daniel, Alfie and Jack. U13 team Louis, Oliver, Louie and Daniel. European Day of Languages The European Day of Languages, every 26th of September, celebrates the wealth of languages and cultures that exist throughout the continent of Europe. This year at Egglescliffe, we celebrated with a multitude of activities all throughout the school. Each tutor group was tasked with a project to research a European country and present the information as creatively as possible. Choosing the best three out of the whole school was a seriously difficult task, as the projects were all so great! Throughout the day, teachers from all different subjects brought languages into their classroom. Highlights included recreating a scene from ‘An Inspector calls’ in Drama whilst learning about the inaccuracies of translation engines, learning how Latin has influenced English and making spells in the English department, as well as naming cultural landmarks in Geography and having to ask for equipment in a foreign language in DT and Science. On top of all this, many teachers across the school could be heard trying out their foreign language skills on pupils during lesson time. At lunchtime, pupils enjoyed a special European Day of Languages themed menu in dining rooms decorated especially for the occasion. Over in Endeavour the theme of food and flags continued as pupils enjoyed decorating biscuits and flags to celebrate the day. Finally, pupils in KS3 had the opportunity to enter a national language competition, which this year invited pupils to create a piece of work in a foreign language about ‘a magical trip’. They have also been tasked with completing fifty language challenges over the next few weeks. The MFL department are really looking forward to celebrating the outcomes of these two tasks and awarding prizes to the winning entries!

Macmillan: World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, Friday, 27th September 2019 A huge thank you to the sixth formers and staff that helped out at this year’s Macmillan Coffee Morning and many, many thanks to everyone who baked or brought in cakes.

We raised an amazing £519.00 in just half an hour! The Main Hall was buzzing with staff and sixth formers enjoying teas, coffees and a veritable cornucopia of cake! The raffle also attracted a lot of interest thanks to the generosity of so many who donated prizes and Uzair’s great selling techniques – he managed to sell all the tickets! Mrs. Blake would like to thank everyone who supported this amazing organisation. Year 12 students smash five fells in the Lake District on Gold Training Weekend – Friday, 11th October – Sunday, 13th October 2019

Egglescliffe students have completed their first training weekend in preparation for their Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

Following a hectic week at school, the students and staff headed over to the Lake District, stopping first in Keswick. With the night drawing in, it was a chilly affair, but the students enjoyed their fish and chip supper sat by the gorgeous Derwentwater.

After a further 45 minute journey, the students arrived at their bunkhouse in Lamplugh, surrounded by the Western fells of the Lake District, where they were quickly put to work by Mr and Mrs Wood, our mountain leaders, who refreshed the students’ memories of navigation and compass bearings.

On Saturday, the students were put through their paces with expert leadership in navigation, bearings, back-bearings, pacing, and general walking and mountain fitness and safety. All of the Year 12s were exceptional during this day – ascending and reaching the peaks of four different Wainwright fells in the North-Western area. They were positive, focused, and kept up excellent morale throughout the day, despite some white-out conditions early on in the day, and some blustery wind on the tops. Some students chose to carry on with Miss Ghost and Mrs Wood to achieve a fifth peak, showing excellent determination and motivation.

Far trickier than the above, however, was the meal planning for the entire group. The students had been tasked with providing a three-course meal for the fourteen members of the party, and they rose to the challenge exceptionally well. Not only did they work incredibly well as a team, they also provided the staff with superb sustenance and an interesting after-dinner game of Werewolves.

Sunday saw far trickier conditions in the form of persistent rain whilst students undertook micro-navigation activities. Again, students were positive and resilient, and demonstrated fab senses of humour throughout the experience.

Miss Ghost, Manager of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award at Egglescliffe School, said: “This is the first time we have run the Gold Award at the school for a long period of time and we couldn’t be prouder to support students that we have shared the journey with from Bronze and Silver. The students were brilliant this weekend and we can’t wait to see them continue to grow and achieve their goals.”

The students will undertake a 4-day, 3-night practice and assessed expedition in 2020 as part of completing their DofE Gold Award.

The Gold DofE at Egglescliffe is supported by volunteer staff members Mrs Wood and Mr Wilkinson, and external leader Tom Wood, who give up their free time to train and develop the students across day walks, after-school sessions, and expeditions; a huge thank you must go to them as the programme really couldn’t run without their involvement.
