European Council It came into being in 1974
Highest political body of the European Union
Compromises the Heads of State or Government of the Union’s Member and the President of the Commission
Has no formal executive or legislative power
Deals with major issues and decisions taken

Meetings Its meeting is chaired by the member from the member
state currently holding Presidency of the Council of the European Union
Meetings usually take place four times a year (two per Presidency)
Special European Councils are also organised
All Meetings will be held in Brussels.
