The French capital really needs no introduction. Its renowned attractions – the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, the Champs Elysées, Sacré Coeur – are amongst the world’s best loved and most photographed, while her museums – the Louvre, the Musée d’Orsay, the Musée Picasso – are amongst the most visited and most cherished.

ParisChristmas Markets

A visit to Paris in December offers the opportunity to experience the city’s Christmas Markets as well as to enjoy its spectacular Christmas lights. Our included guided sightseeing and orientation tour will include the city’s famous sights, including the historic Île de la Cité, the Louvre, the fabled Left Bank of La Seine and of course the Eiffel Tower, Paris’ enduring symbol. The tour ends in the shadow of one of the latest additions’ to the Paris skyline, the ultramodern Grand Arche, near to the Christmas market at La Défense, which is one of the city’s best. The Christmas market on the Avenue des Champs-Elysées is the largest in the city. Stretching from the Champs-Elysées roundabout to the Place de la Concorde, wooden chalets selling a variety of wares including Yuletide trinkets, traditional gifts and speciality foods line both sides of this famous avenue alongside the trees adorned with sparkling lights. Elsewhere, scattered throughout the city there are other markets to enjoy including ancient Montmartre, Montparnasse Tower and Saint-Germain-des-Prés on the Left Bank.An excellent way to view this wonderful city and its Christmas lights is to take a late afternoon or early evening Bateaux Mouches Cruise along the Seine River.

Lasting for an hour, with English or French language commentary, this is a popular way to experience some of the city’s prestigious monuments and grand buildings from a unique vantage point. A route map for each member of the group is included.Away from the city centre, the residence of the kings of France from Louis XIV to Louis XVI, Chateau de Versailles, houses the Royal Apartments, including the Hall of Mirrors and bedchambers of the King and Queen, as well as the apartments of Louis XV’s daughters and heir to the throne. The extensive gardens, the Grand and Petit Trianon and Marie Antoinette’s hamlet are also well worth a visit, while a visit to the Place du Marché Notre Dame, Versailles’ open air market, is a must for its special atmosphere and fine selection of fresh vegetables, meat, cheese and other products.

Opal CoastChristmas Markets

France’s Opal Coast region provides the ideal way to introduce students to French life, culture and language. Within just an hour’s travel from Calais it is possible to enjoy the Christmas markets plus a wide range of other visits and activities. You can therefore make a worthwhile tour in just a day or, of course, stay away for one or two nights and take in all the region has to offer.

We base our tours around the lively and cosmopolitan city of Lille. In recent years, the city’s elegant centre has been transformed and designer boutiques now line the streets of the medieval centre. Numerous restaurants and cafés will be vying with each other for your custom - the cuisine a tempting mix of traditional French and Belgian specialities, particularly moules et frites, for which Lille is renowned. The Town Hall Belfry provides the ideal vantage point for admiring the city from

above. Don’t miss the old Stock Exchange building - the Vielle Bourse - a reflection of the city’s historical commercial importance. You may also want to visit Palais des Beaux Arts - France’s second largest museum after the Louvre - that has works by Goya and Rubens, as well as the city’s most striking monument, Louis XV’s triumphal arch, Porte de Paris.Lille’s Christmas Market is traditionally held at Place Rihour, which is adorned with decorations, colourful lights and market stalls. In the main square, a huge Ferris wheel is erected, which offers a great view of the city and its Christmas illuminations. In Amiens, the Christmas market is staged in the heart of the city, and is one of the biggest and best Christmas markets in northern France. The fresh alpine setting plays host to over 120 chalets and stalls which include a wide range of produce, from seafood, pâtés and cheeses to sweet treats such as the famous Amiens macaroons. There is also an open air ice rink, merry-go-rounds, singers and shows, the most mesmerising of which is La Cathédrale en Couleurs – a free light show held during December on the striking Gothic cathedral.

Arras, which is renowned as one of the prettiest towns in northern France, holds its spectacular Christmas Market in the Grand Place. Around 60 exhibitors offer a wide selection of arts and crafts, as well as local delicacies.

The Rhine and Moselle boast the best Christmas Markets in Europe. Aachen, Cologne, Koblenz, Bonn, Heidelberg and Rudesheim Christmas markets and festivities have to be seen to be believed!

RhinelandChristmas Markets

The Rhineland is an ideal destination to introduce students to German life, culture and language. There are a great number of Christmas Markets that we recommend you visit, naturally dependent on the duration of your tour and itinerary plans. The delightful city of Aachen, once the favourite residence of Charlemagne, is renowned for the Mediterranean flair of its historical old quarter, which is filled with bubbling fountains and its famous cathedral. Every year the squares and streets round the Aachen Town Hall are transformed for the Aachen Christmas Market with festive lights, music and market stalls, whose specialities include an amazing variety of Printen cakes.Cologne’s location on the Rhine has long been key to its status as capital of the region. Visitors come not only to see the awe inspiring Dom and Romanesque churches, but also for the city’s fine museums. There are actually four Christmas markets – in the Cathedral Square, at the Old Market, the New Market and in Rudolfplatz – which are open from late November. The magnificent Dom Cathedral, which has been restored to its former glory after the extensive damage during WWII, provides a wonderful backdrop for the largest market in the city centre.Located next to the Rhine, Bonn is best-known for being the birthplace of the world-famous composer Beethoven, but every year the city’s Christmas fair conjures up a festive atmosphere on Münsterplatz and Bottlerplatz, on Windeckstrasse, Vivatsgasse, Friedensplatz and Poststrasse.

November – December2016 & 2017

The atmospherically illuminated façades around the Münsterplatz form festive scenery for the market booths.Koblenz is situated within the picturesque landscape of the Rhineland and is home to an abundance of cultural monuments and historical buildings. Its traditional Christmas market is held in the picturesque old town, just a stone’s throw away from the main shopping street. There are over 130 festively decorated wooden stalls offering an extensive range of hand-made goods and Christmas decorations, as well as a huge range of seasonal gift ideas.Another choice is to visit the magnificent city of Heidelberg, which boasts a Christmas Market stretching over five squares. Famous as one of Europe’s most romantic settings and for the operetta ‘The Student Prince’, Heidelberg attracts visitors from all over the world, drawn by the castle, the market and the medieval Altstadt. From Heidelberg, it is a short journey to Rüdesheim, for the chance to enjoy the magical atmosphere of its market stalls and famous Nativity scene.

A sample from our wide range:

Boppard to Koblenz Rhine CruiseCombine a Rhine River cruise past castles and vineyards with a breathtaking ride on the cable car from Koblenz over the Rhine to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress. The combination of a cruise (1½ to 2 hours long), the return cable car ride and admission to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress is a popular choice.

Romanticum KoblenzHoused in an impressive building this interactive exhibition of the Middle Rhine Valley is staged around and area of 800 m2. Setting out as a passenger on a steamboat you are taken on a journey through time, experiencing the romance of the Rhine up close, its’ romance, legends, and fairytales.

Schokoladenmuseum CologneThe Chocolate Museum is located in a glass and metal building constructed to look like a ship on the Rheinau harbour peninsula near Cologne Cathedral. It takes you on a tour through the 3,000 year history of chocolate - from the Aztec ambrosia "food of the gods" to modern industrial chocolate products.

This mountainous region in southwest Germany with its vast dense evergreen forests, beautiful lakes, charming valleys and picturesque villages inspired some of the Brothers Grimm fairy tales. There is much for students to be inspired by, and as they explore the region they’ll soon discover there is far more to the Black Forest than just the famous gateau.

Black Forest

The Black Forest offers a variety of educational and cultural visits, many of which embrace the great outdoors and for some of those living in the region traditional economic activities are still an important part of daily life.

The main Christmas market in the Black Forest region is in Freiburg, held from the end of November into December. Located in the very heart of the city’s beautiful old historical quarter, most of the market is located on the Rathausplatz and then spills down into neighbouring streets. There is ample opportunity to marvel at, buy and enjoy what is on offer at over 130 individual stalls. Delicious treats range from ginger cake and biscuits, to good, hearty food and a wide selection of punch and mulled wines, much of it from local producers. The many arts and crafts include ceramics, designer candles, hand puppets, amber jewellery and Christmas decorations.

The city of Freiburg sits on the edge of the Black Forest and is Germany’s southern most and sunniest city boasting one of the country’s prettiest old quarters, with its characteristic bächle – the narrow channels of water that run alongside the pavements. Add to that a wealth of culture and history, scenic surroundings and a laidback atmosphere, it is an ideal city for students to experience German life, culture and the language. A stroll through the old quarter overlooked by the 500 year old 116-metre-tall spire of the stunning minster

is one of Germany’s most beautiful religious buildings. The square on which it stands is the largest in the city centre.

After discovering the city on the ground, take Germany’s longest loop cable car up to a height of 1,284m. A comfortable and environmentally friendly way of ascending Freiburg’s landmark Schauinsland mountain and to enjoy the fantastic panoramic view of Freiburg and the Rhine Valley right up to the blue band of the Vosges.

A sample from our wide range:

Black Forest Open Air MuseumSee the last 400 years of Black Forest culture and history come to life. The regions architecture, traditions, customs and trades, and the way people lived and farmed throughout the ages are presented in fully-furnished farmhouses, several outbuildings and gardens located across 12 acres.

In addition to a guided tour, school groups can take part in a variety of interactive learning experiences.

Europa Park Theme ParkThe Europa Park theme park is Germany’s largest and Europe’s second most popular theme park. With more than 100 attractions including 11 rollercoasters and shows, it is a popular choice for a fun day out. Being themed around 13 European countries, students can also gain an insight into different countries and cultures.

Dorotheenhütte Glass Factory This factory in Wolfach still manufactures mouth blown glass using traditional methods. During a visit you can discover the fascinating history of glassmaking, the growth of glass artistry, see how glass is blown and cut, and older students have the opportunity to try glass-blowing for themselves.

Gutach Waterfalls - TribergGermany’s highest waterfalls are a splendid spectacle of nature. The waters of the Gutach plunge over 160m in seven cascades into the valley below. Nature and wildlife can be observed along the pathways to and from the waterfalls.
