Current position Pierpaolo Vittorini is Aggregate Professor in Computer Science (INF/01) in the Dep.of Life, Health and Environmental Sciences of the University of L’Aquila. His researchinterests are computational epidemiology, statistical processing of biomedical data,health information systems and artificial intelligence. He teaches Computer scienceand Health informatics in the Faculty of Medicine of the University of L’Aquila. He re-ceived the “Giuseppe Carruba” award as the best professor of the Faculty of Medicinefor the Academic Year 2006/2007. He was the Project Coordinator of the TERENCEEU research project (grant nr. 257410), as well as scientific responsible for otherprojects funded by companies working in the biomedical sector. He is author of 115publications on international and national journals, conferences and workshops. Hehas been member of the scientific committee of several international conferencesand workshops (e.g., ebTEL, mis4TEL, PACBB) and editor of special issues of inter-national journals (e.g., “Evidence- and User-based Technology Enhanced Learning”of IJTEL).

Research activities

Health informatics In the area of health informatics mainly applied to epidemiology, hygiene and preventive medicine, heworked or he is currently working on:

– the study of models and algorithms useful to simulate the evolution of fires and to compare different preventivemeasures (2016–);

– the development of devices, app and software in different contexts, connected with both medicine and computerscience (2014–);

– the development of algorithms useful to simulate the evolution of epidemics and to compare different preventivemeasures and interventions (2010–);

– the development, testing, and evaluation of the usability and pedagogical effectiveness of an adaptive learningsystem for poor-comprehenders (2009–2016);

– the development of web services useful for the statistical analysis of XML biomedical data (2006–2009);

– extending XPath/XQuery so to include statistical functions in XML native databases (2006–2009);

– proposed a reusable web-based information system supporting multi-centre epidemiological studies (2003-2005);

– proposed a web-based information system supporting residential health assistance (2005);

– the development of an algorithm useful to identify the optimal number and localisation of local health districts(2002-2003).

Research projects

GEOSAFE He is involved the H2020 GEOSAFE project (Geospatial based Environment for Optimisation SystemsAddressing Fire Emergencies) and in particular in the creation of robust, efficient and flexible responses forwildfire management by investigating first robust processes and dynamic environment prior to designing efficientresponses (2016–2020)

Tinnitus In collaboration with the BISITE research group, he is leading a project focused on the management of tin-nitus, whose aim is to develop both (i) an hardware device that can be connected to a smartphone/tablet able toexecute (a part of) the audiological and psychoacoustic examinations needed to diagnose tinnitus, and (ii) a ded-icated app that controls the device and automate both the execution of the examinations and the administrationof the questionnaires that measure the induced disability (2016–in progress)

TERENCE He was Project coordinator of the TERENCE research project (EU grant nr. 257410), and PrincipalInvestigator for the same grant, for the University of L’Aquila (2010–2013)

ARTO He was the scientific responsible for the “A.R.T.O.” research project, finalised to the design and realisationhardware and software of a telemetry system of the oxygen contained in CAIRE Inc. LIBERATOR oxygen bottles(2010–2011);

SPES He was the scientific responsible of the epidemiological unit of the “S.P.E.S.” research project, finalised to thecollection and analysis of data about the health status of the citizens of L’Aquila in the post-earthquake (2010–2012).

Ph.D. The research conducted during the doctorate focused on e-learning, with a particular focus on developing novelmethodologies and software tools supporting the reuse of learning objects. Furthermore, an algorithm that evaluatesthe complexity of a web-course was developed by means of ad-hoc metrics.
