What are Eurocodes The Eurocodes are a set of harmonised European standards for the design of buildings and civil engineering structures There are 10 Eurocodes made up of 58 parts which cover the basis of structural design actions on structures the design of concrete steel composite steel and concrete timber masonry and aluminium structures geotechnical design and the design of structures for earthquake resistance

Publications about the Eurocodes come in several different forms There are the codes themselves along with their national annexes and there are guidance documents of one sort or other These can include what is known as lsquonon-contradictory complementary informationrsquo as well as execution standards introductions and design handbooks

The guide here is by no means definitive and will be kept under review Most of the links will take you to a place where you can download the publication or purchase it Otherwise the ICE Library is likely to hold copies either for reference or loan

Similarly if you have any specific enquiries on the Eurocodes and related articles or books please contact the ICE Library on 020 7665 2251 or libraryiceorguk The codes themselves

All 58 codes with national annexes associated NCCI and Published Documents (PD) are available for purchase from the BSI website Further information can be obtained from the dedicated BSI Eurocodes website The ICE Library also holds a complete reference set of the documents General guidance A number of organisations have produced guidance on the Eurocodes and related matters Much of it is freely downloadable although one or two documents may require you to register to gain access Regrettably the government publications have been moved from one url to another several times They are now effectively regarded as historic although they remain useful If you have difficulty finding them the Library should have copies Department of Communities and Local Government

Provides easy access to many of the Centrersquos publications about Eurocodes 2 and 6 comprising design guidance and advice Much of it is freely downloadable and includes worked examples webcasts and software

Eurocode 3

Steel Construction Institute

The SCI contributes to two websites for the steel Eurocode

Access Steel ndash a joint venture between SCI and CTICM it is also supported by a number of European steel manufacturers It claims to provide step-by-step guidance from scheme development to detailed design and harmonised quality-assured information in English French German and Spanish It looks to me as though Polish and Czech are available too You need to register to access information but otherwise it is free Information is found by use of a search box There are a set of FAQs which appear to be entirely about fire engineering

Steel NCCI ndash a joint venture between SCI BCSA and Corus the website lists all the lsquonon-contradictory complementary informationrsquo about steel You can search for NCCIs by text and by clause and as above you must register to gain access to the full text

Eurocode 5

Timber Research and Development Association (TRADA)

A single portal which brings together all of the publications that TRADA has produced about Eurocode 5 These include technical information of various kinds design tools training courses and at least one case study The latter are freely available as long as you register Much of TRADArsquos other information is free only to its own members However the construction briefings can be accessed by anyone In particular there is one which summarises and compares the design methods of Eurocode 5 and BS 5268 Part 2

The links below provide lists of the software available either open source or commercial

Free Eurocode Design Software Commercial Eurocode Design Software

Training

Thomas Telford Training offers a wide range of Eurocode training courses covering technical best practice

Suggested websites General

British Standards Institution

A single portal for all the Eurocodes which lists and describes them along with BSIrsquos own guides and allows purchase It also explains the National Annexes NCCIs and Execution Standards and how to use them and offers videos news and FAQs You can sign up for a Eurocodes newsletter as well as a RSS feed

Eurocodes Expert

Another single portal to all the Eurocodes supported by ICE and the Institution of Structural Engineers It has useful lists of publications software and web resources but is no longer being kept up-to-date

Highways Agency

Registered charity number 210252 Charity registered in Scotland number SC038629 - 14 -

A specialist site on the Agencyrsquos implementation of the Eurocodes it hasnrsquot been updated in over a year Has a very brief explanation on using the Eurocodes for bridge design

Institution of Structural Engineers

The site sits within the technical topic areas on the ISE website There are a few documents on implementation of quite an early date but primarily it allows access to the website for the UK Wind National Annex The latter contains data that can be used free of charge including values of base wind speeds and wind factors and an ENcalculator program

Eurocode 2

Concrete Centre

Registered charity number 210252 Charity registered in Scotland number SC038629 - 15 -

Eurocode 6

Eurocode6org

Specialist website for Eurocode 6 supported by the International Masonry Society and the Brick Development Association amongst others It provides material to support design and construction of masonry to the Eurocode such as design aids examples and programs as well as FAQs and a list of appropriate training courses In addition the site features a description and explanation of the code and a full list of supporting standards

International Masonry Society

The Societyrsquos own webpage about Eurocode 6 Again it looks as though it hasnrsquot been updated in a while but it still offers two or three freely downloadable design aids

Eurocode 7

Eurocode7com

Maintained by the company Geocentrix the website has lots of information about Eurocode 7 One of the contributors is Dr Andrew Bond author of Decoding Eurocode 7 Apart from listing books and articles available there is information about training courses and the development and future evolution of the standard Dr Bond writes a blog and although only one of the articles is downloadable several of the webinars and lectures are as are the design examples
