THE BAY ORGAN & KEYBOARD SOCIETYThe Bay Organ and Keyboard Society (Bare, Morecambe) celebrates its fortieth anniversary this year after three changes of venue and a change of name.Originally named The Grange over Sands and District Organ Society it began life with seven members meeting in each other’s homes, then forming a committee and a set of rules, most of which are still in the constitution today. They met on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month and were given lessons by local dealers who also provided an organ for the night. The years passed and the membership grew to a maximum of fifty-one in 1989 by which time money borrowed from members had bought their own organ and been paid back by funding from tea dances. On the third Sunday of the month during the summer six or so concerts are held to help cover costs and a replacement organ when necessary. As membership dropped, due mainly to old age and illness, it was decided to change to their current name and venue. The society is now thriving with around thirty members and they look forward to many more years of happy Wednesday evening music. Please visit their website at www.baymusic.co.uk

BARNSTAPLE ORGAN & KEYBOARD CLUB.In 1962 the Hammond Company of America decided to have a commercial seminar for the music trade to promote Hammond Electronic organs. This took place in Blackpool and a Mr H.W.Whiting who was the proprietor of Nicklins Music Shop on The Square in Barnstaple attended. In 1963 he introduced informal meetings for the owners of Hammond Electronic Organs at his shop, actively supported by his staff- a Mrs Derges and Mr Peter Corney, and so the Barnstaple group of the Hammond Organ Society was formed. A committee was created under the chairmanship of Mr Carl Jennings, Mr Frayne became Hon Treasurer and Mrs Una Arnold Hon Secretary (until recently a current member). The first meetings were held in the shop, so advantage could be taken to discuss and play various instruments that were on display and for sale. The first highlight evenings were in the nature of special promotions arranged with different organ companies/manufacturers. However on Monday 12th April 1965, The Queens Hall, now the Queens Theatre presented an Hammond Organ Showcase with Keith Beckingham, and it is very likely that this demonstration/concert brought greater awareness to the town and in particular to the newly formed Hammond Organ Society at Nicklins.Such was the interest in the society at this time that it was decided to hold public concerts, and in the autumn of 1965, three were arranged at the Imperial Hotel which featured Dudley Savage, David Nicholas and George Blackmore respectively. The Club then went from strength to strength and in the following years notable artistes such as Ena Baga, William Davies, Robin Richmond, Arnold Loxam, Harrild Smart and Trevor Bolshaw, to name but a few all appeared. In between times informal meetings still took place at Nicklins Music Shop. Vespers was a name given to interval music provided by the members. The proprietor of The Three Bears café – a Mrs Garlan, who herself was a member, provided refreshments. There is also record of the fact that in 1976 organ demonstrations were arranged at the Braunton Road Motel now the Brend Barnstaple Hotel.

The Club still retains copies of minutes from committee meetings dating back to 18th April 1974. The Chairperson at this time was Mrs Una Arnold, while the Vice-Chairperson was Maurice Benbow. In May 1976 the club changed its name to The Barnstaple Organ Society to reflect the members choice of the various organ that were then available. There were other local organ clubs that had been formed and reciprocal events were arranged, notably with Bideford, Ilfracombe and Launceston. Membership fees at the time were £3.50 single and £6.50 double, but in 1977 they were reduced by £1. In this same year Nicklins Music Shop moved from The Square in the High Street, but five years later it closed on the retirement of Mr Whiting. This presented the club with a major problem, no sponsor and no organ to play. Indeed there was talk of closing the club down unless there was fund raising to purchase an organ. An extraordinary General Meeting was called and as a result the membership fee was raised again, plus new members for the first time were required to pay a joining fee of £3 to go towards the organ fund. An organ was purchased – an Hammond Regent, and the club President (from 1981) Armsbee Bancroft was invited to inaugurate it by playing at a special arranged summer concert. The period 1986-7 saw a change of management at the Imperial Hotel, and with its increasing room rental costs it was decided to move venue, and at the same time change and upgrade the club organ. This was done and the Club acquired a Yamaha portable, which was more suitable for the move to the Newport Primary School. However due to the requirements of the Devon County Council this proved unsatisfactory and in 1990 the clubs home became the Village Hall in Bishops Tawton, at which time there was a further name change to The Barnstaple Organ and Keyboard Club. The building of the Sainsburys complex at Roundswell gave the club through the auspices of the then Club Secretary – Len Wharton, the opportunity to take advantage of the Community Centre for its larger audiences in excess of two hundred. From the very beginning the club has mainly met monthly with Members own nights added during the winter months. Christmas parties have in the past featured the likes of Douglas Braunton and Ted Manley, whilst more recently club member Gordon Dockings has led a group of accordionists – The Barum Players. In addition Maurice Benbow and Roy Crabb brought the sound of the big band being members of the Barnstaple Concert and Cedars Showband. The club is still very much active today under the chairmanship of Alec Thorne who is supported by an enthusiastic committee including Clive Free who is currently responsible for programme planning, and the successful Roundswell concerts. The finances were for many years in the capable hands of Anne Cooper, Geoffrey Clarke, Victor Harris and more recently by Geoffrey Broster. Other committee members all play their part in various ways. Paul Roberts became the Club President in 1989 in place of Armsbee Bancroft, and he actively supports and attends club functions as and when he is able, as well as, giving the occasional concert. An increasing membership put pressure on the club meetings at the Village Hall in Bishops Tawton, as a result of which a further move was made to Christ Church in Bear Street, Barnstaple which took place in 1999. More recently the club has moved permanently to its current venue which is back to the Roundswell Community Hall in the Sainsbury complex. Membership in recent times has fallen back, but this is in common with many other similar clubs throughout the country, as a result of an aging population who enjoy this type of easy listening music. To make the club more appealing and in tune with the trends adopted by the various manufacturers, the club is now known as The Barnstaple Keyboard and Light Music Club, a far cry from its initial inception.

EAST COAST ORGAN SOCIETYThe East Coast Organ Society are pleased to report that they will be ‘making music’ again in the near future. One or two heads have been ‘banged together’ a new committee formed and a new constitution has been agreed, along with one or two changes in format.
