MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY-I(Effective from the admitted batch 2008 – 09 onwards)

Time: 3 Hours Max.Marks: 60

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------  Instructions: Each Unit carries 12 marks.

Answer all units choosing one question from each unit.

All parts of the unit must be answered in one place only.

Figures in the right hand margin indicate marks allotted.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

UNIT-I

1. a) State and explain the factors that determine the selection of a

casting allay and casting process to be employed 6

 b) What is draft allowance? How is it provided for patterns?

Explain 3

c) Explain the importance of permeability in sand molds. What

are differences between green strength and dry strength? 3

OR

2. a) Why is it necessary to carry out testing of sands? Enumerating

various tests, explain their importance and justification/

usefulness in foundry practice 6

 b) Explain why natural sands cannot be used in CO2 process?

Explain the principle of CO2 process. Give the advantages and

disadvantages of this process  6

UNIT-II

3. a) Explain with figures the various types of gating systems 6

 b) Critically explain the solidification phenomenon of metals and

alloys with suitable figures and examples 6

OR

  b) Explain about the following casting defects

i) rat tails ii) Misruns iii) Hot tears 6

UNIT-III

5. a) What are the various factors that affect the heat affected zone?

Explain them fully. Show the various regions in heat affected

zone 6

 b) Sketch the natural flame in oxy-acetylene welding process.

Explain the chemical reactions taking place in the various

zones of the flame. Compare this with oxidizing and

carburizing flames 6

OR

6. a) Explain the principle of arc welding process. Compare the

merits and demerits of AC & DC arc welding processes 6

 b) Explain the Electrical characteristics of an arc 3

c) Explain how arc is initiated in arc welding process 3

UNIT-IV

7. a) What do you mean by spot welding? Explain spot welding

process. What metals may be spot welded? Can dissimilar

metals be spot welded? Give reasons 6

 b) What are the important design considerations in brazing

process? Explain. Distinguish between brazing and braze

welding 6

OR

8. a) Explain the factors that influence the selection of fluxes in

soldering, brazing and brazing welding processes. Discuss

about various types of inorganic and organic fluxes 6

 b) Define and explain the terms cold working and hot working 3

c) Explain about 2-high rolling mill 3
