Message from Bishop Coyne I announce the second phase of the reopening of our churches
to celebrate daily and Sunday Mass. The obligation to attend
Sunday Mass remains lifted until further notice, especially if
you are part of a vulnerable population and/or have an
underlying health condition. Please approach the celebration
of Mass with charity and love for our clergy and faith
community by following the protocols:
• Stay home if you are sick or not feeling well.
• Wear a mask in Mass.
• Sanitize your hands upon entry. Due to shortages of
sanitizer, please bring your own if possible.
• Sit in designated pews and respect social distance
between others of 6 feet or more unless you are one
family unit.
• Refrain from congregating in tight areas or entering
cordoned off areas.
• Follow the protocols to receive Holy Communion as
directed at Mass. While these protocols are intrusive, they are necessary as they
allow us to celebrate the sacraments in person while doing our
part to help stop the spread of coronavirus.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
– Bishop Christopher Coyne

Help Spread the Word of Divine Mercy with a Lawn Sign…
Jesus told St. Faustina: Not in the beauty of color, nor of the brush
lies the greatness of this image, but in My Grace (D.#313)
Our Divine Mercy Neighborhood Campaign is a way to promote
the Divine Mercy Image through these beautiful 18 x 24 inch,
double sided lawn signs. We envision dotting the state of
Vermont with Jesus’ image, which speaks for itself…Jesus, I Trust
In You! If we do our part, God will do the rest.
For those who would like to join this Campaign, please contact
Nicole Pion at 802-744-9952 or Theresa McAvinney at 802-744-
6272 to order your sign. The cost per sign is $13.75 for local
deliver or pick up. May He bless our efforts to help lead souls to
Himself.
Jesus, we trust in You!

First Friday Devotions
A “First Friday” is the first Friday of the month and is often
marked by special devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus since
Jesus died for us and won our salvation on a Friday. Every
Friday of the year, and not only the Fridays in Lent, is a special
day of penance as stipulated in the Code of Canon Law: “The
penitential days and times in the universal Church are every
Friday of the whole year and the season of Lent” (Canon 1250).
St. Margaret Mary Alacoque (1647-1690) reported visions of
Jesus Christ directing her to promote devotion to the Sacred
Heart of Jesus on nine consecutive First Fridays in reparation
for sins and in order to show love to Jesus. In return for this act
of devotion, which usually includes Mass, Communion,
confession and even an hour of Eucharistic Adoration on the
eve of the first Friday of the month, our blessed Savior
reputedly promised St. Margaret Mary the following blessings:
“In the excess of the mercy of my Heart, I promise you that my
all powerful love will grant to all those who will receive
Communion on the First Fridays, for nine consecutive months,
the grace of final repentance: they will not die in my
displeasure, nor without receiving the sacraments; and my
Heart will be their secure refuge in that last hour.”
The devotion is officially sanctioned, but it was not so at first. In
fact, St. Margaret Mary met with resistance and incredulity from
the start in her own religious community, and not until 75 years
after her death was the First Friday devotion to the Sacred Heart
officially recognized. Almost 240 years after her death, Pope
Pius XI stated that Jesus had appeared to St. Margaret Mary in
his encyclical Miserentissimus Redemptor (1928), fully eight years
after she was formally canonized a saint by Pope Benedict XV.

Prayer before the Blessed Sacrament
Eternal Father, I acknowledge that the infinity of your love has
come to save me.
You are patient, kind, compassionate, and pious, thanks for not
letting me fall into the most challenging moments.
The only way I can thank you for the mercy you have shown me
is by praying. I stand before the presence of your loving spirit. I
wish to remain at your side to forgive myself for my sins and to
renew myself in the passion for paying you homage with praise
and adoration.
Oh! Blessed Jesus, I have come before you to receive the virtues
of your divine and kind heart, accompanied by all the faithful,
the Holy Church, and the religious who profess your word.
Adorable holiness, Jesus, I wish that this time may be filled with
love and that I may receive all the grace You have reserved for
me.
Dear Virgin Mary, I ask you to embrace me with the sentiments
of your immaculate heart. Oh, my God! I believe and love you,
so today, I ask forgiveness for those who do not understand or
do not trust in your infinite divinity.
Most Holy Trinity, receive my deep love by asking forgiveness
for every sacrilege with which our beloved Lord was offended.
Amen!

Dear Friends,During these unprecedented times in response to the
Covid-19 pandemic, we have faced personal and collective challenges, including the closing of our churches and the suspension of the public celebration of the Mass, the other sacraments, devotions and funerals. But we have also realized once again something we have known throughout the history of the Church: There is nothing that can stop us from proclaiming the Good News of salvation, caring for the neediest and spiritually feeding God’s flock.
Our ministries have continued in new and creative ways. The Diocese and local parishes now live-stream daily and Sunday Mass as well as devotional prayer and other faith engagement activities. During the shutdown we continued to operate Catholic schools and provide emergency aid and residential care through Vermont Catholic Charities. Now, by the grace of God, we have been able to open our doors to celebrate the sacramental worship of the Church together again.
But we still face many challenges. Prior to the pandemic, I was about to launch the first statewide capital campaign for the Catholic Church in Vermont based on the Diocesan Synod priorities that we spent two years developing. That obviously had to be postponed. Still a great deal of time and money has gone into the planning of this campaign, and the contract with the company I engaged to help run the campaign is running down. All things being equal, I would not be starting a capital campaign at this time. But I think we have to and not just for contractual reasons.
Now more than ever, we need to move forward with our synod priorities and launch the Christ Our Hope: Building a Vibrant Church capital campaign. We cannot give up on the future of the parishes and ministries serving the faith
community. Many of them have seen significant downturns in terms of funding, and they need our help.
This campaign is rooted in the works of Christ (Matthew 4:23) and the outcomes of the synod to build vibrant parishes (Preaching), strengthen our evangelization (Teaching) and communicate the compassion of Christ in our service to the most vulnerable (Healing).
“And he went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every infirmity among the people” (Mt 4:23).
This campaign offers a wonderful opportunity for each parish to use 60 percent of the funds they raise to address specific parish needs with the other 40 percent going to the larger Catholic community to strengthen our faith formation programs and expand emergency aid to the most vulnerable among us.
Next week I will celebrate the official public kickoff at the beginning of the Sunday 10 a.m. Mass that will be live-streamed at www.vermontcatholic.org/tvmass. I invite you to join me or watch at a later time. Please also take the opportu-nity to watch the Christ Our Hope video which explains why we need to move forward with the campaign and how it will strengthen our church for the future: www.christourhopevt.org.
I have already made a personal pledge of over $10,000 towards the campaign. I ask you to please join me in being generous as well. With Christ as our hope, whatever we raise will be for His glory and the Kingdom of God.
Sincerely Yours in Christ,
The Most Reverend Christopher J. Coyne Bishop of Burlington

When the pandemic hit and our churches closed our ministries continued in new and creative ways. We quickly embraced new technology and kept the faith community connected with live-streamed Mass and faith engagement opportunities. Our Catholic schools provided quality online learning and our VT Catholic Charities residential homes cared for the elderly and distributed emergency aid to many families impacted by COVID-19. Your support allowed us to keep going.
