Third Sunday of Advent www.sangabrielmissionchurch,org Page Three

From the Pastor

Dear Friends,

Ritual and symbols are part of the treasure of our Catho-lic Faith. Today, the third Sunday of Advent is a little dif-ferent from the other three Sundays. This third Sunday is called “Gaudete Sunday.” The word “gaudete” is Latin for “rejoice.” On this Sunday the church invites us to intensify our longing for the coming, birth and incarnation of God in Jesus. Just like parents wait with great anticipation for the birth of their child, especially their first; we too are remind-ed of the gift that is given to us in Jesus. Most of the read-ings for today speak of joyous anticipation. Visually, the pattern of the purple candles on the Advent wreath is broken with the lighting of the pink candle. Perhaps, more than ever, we need this reminder to bring us back from the chaot-ic commercialism and consumerism that Christmas has be-come. Furthermore, our present experience of division with-in our country reminds us of our longing and desire for uni-ty. The Advent season is like a little Lenten season, hence, the use of the color purple. Purple is the color for repent-ance and mourning for our all that impacts and affects our relationships with God, others and ourselves. However, the great event that we are celebrating is a birth and this calls for celebration. The long awaited Messiah of which the ancient prophets have spoken of is finally here and this calls for re-joicing. The gospel of Matthew says: “Go tell John what you hear and see: the blind regain their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised and the poor have the good news proclaimed to them. And blessed is the one who take no offense at me.” Do you see yourself in these preferred recipients of the good news that Jesus lists? The message of Isaiah, Paul, and Jesus can only be-come Good News to you when you see yourself is need to be saved, healed, freed, and renewed. If there is no such awareness or need, then the birth and incarnation of God in Jesus can hardly be seen as a gift or cause for rejoicing. More than merely recognizing our sins, the Advent sea-son reminds us of our need for relationship with God and one another. It is through relationship that we are saved, healed, freed, renewed, and made whole again. Relationship is at the heart of who we are and what we are called to be-come. It is through relationship that we were brought into this world. It is through relationship that we grow, mature and create our own identity. It is through relationship that we begin to look beyond ourselves and begin to care for oth-ers. It is through relationship that we form and nurture kin-ship in our communities and societies. And it is through re-lationship that we finally reach our deepest longing: union with God. So, rejoice in the gift of love, mercy, compassion and relationship that God gives you, gives us, in Jesus, our new born King and Savior. May the birth of our Lord renew in us the desire for kinship and relationship with God and with one another.

Fr. Tony Diaz, Pastor

Queridos Amigos

FORMATION CORNER – THOUGHTS TO PONDER, WAYS TO LIVE

No one is prouder of their home state than I am. But although I was born and reared as a Californian, as I’ve had the chance to trav-el through other parts of the country, I’ve had to admit that the beauty of our state is not the same as that of other parts of the coun-try. The beauty of California is as diverse as its people. And because of its varied beauty and envious weather we can often be-come quite arrogant about our home state. And the beauty of our state, much like the variety in life, requires a season of Advent. And this is because Advent is rooted in the virtue of humility. There are many virtues through which we grow in our spiritual lives, but each virtue has its proper place, and humility is the virtue of those journeying through a diverse land. For the spiritual life itself is a journey. In between conception and death stretches a long path, along which we are called to exercise many different virtues, such as temperance, fortitude, justice, prudence, faith and hope. Each offers some spiritual fruit to nourish us as we travel through diverse territory. But all of these virtues lead ultimately in only one direction: into that perfect love which is called charity, or in the classical language, caritas. Saint John tells us that this caritas is the very nature of God: God is love, he says simply. Saint Paul tells us that this caritas is the greatest virtue, without which every other virtue is empty and meaningless. None-theless, sometimes we have to return to the basics. Advent offers us a chance to rediscover what Saint Augustine called “the founda-tion of all other virtues”: the virtue of humility. All of the other virtues of our moral and spiritual life grow out of the “spiritual soil” of humility. Humility is laying ourselves bare: it’s really nothing more than honesty about who we are and where we figure in the scheme of things, which is to say that we are nothing without God. This is why Advent is a penitential season. We seriously examine our consciences, go to Confession, and are reconciled with God and neighbor. This is so because only by admitting how much we are in need of God’s grace can we be ready to accept God the Fa-ther’s gift of His Son sincerely. Only with humility can we hope to draw others into the sweep of God’s love. If we allow ourselves to be loved by God and admit what a beautiful thing that love is, we want others to share in that perfect love of caritas. But you can-not force God’s love, or throw His love, into the lives of others. The only way for people to be first drawn into the mystery of its simple beauty is through humility.

Together we can help. —————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————

San Gabriel Mission Elementary School Students “Transform” Into California Explorers

Fourth Grade California Explorers Living Museum

Mission Elementary’s fourth grade students transformed into California Explorers for their social studies exploration unit! The stu-dents wrote journals in the first person point of view to explain the challenges and suc-cesses of the explorers who discovered parts of California. Then, students came to school dresses as their explorers to be ex-hibits in our "museum!" Each student gave a speech as parents and students "visited" our museum. The students said their favor-ite part was giving the speeches because they really felt like they were the explorer! It made learning come alive for them and they loved having other students come visit the muse

SGMHS Reconcilia on Prayer Service

San Gabriel Mission High School Veritas Campus Ministers led the community in a reconciliation prayer service. The In-ternational Baccalaureate Senior Cohort prepared a skit to remind their Mission Sis-ters of God’s gift of Mercy. We are thankful to our Claretian Priests, Fr. Ray, Fr. Pau-lus, and Fr. Paul, as well as visiting Priest, Fr. Paolo for sharing what reconciliation means to them and giving our students the opportunity to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation as they prepare for the coming of Jesus this Advent season.
