5G Standardization Roadmap

• 5G features are phased. Not possible to standardize all in time for Rel-15 completion and earlydeployments (2018-2020) Early Drop (ED) end of 2017. Done!

• Release 15 (aka phase 1, by June ‘18): a first phase of expected deployments in 2020 (JapanOlympic Games) NR+NC

• Release 16 (aka phase 2, by Dec ’19) will target the ITU IMT-2020 submission

Standards

• Operators: 2020 appears to be a likely start date:

– Nordic & Baltic Regions: common 5G development plan for earlier launches (2018)

– Italy 5G cities

– DT will introduce 5G in its entire footprint from 2020

– Orange 5G launches between 2020 & 2022; trials with Ericsson & Nokia, and recent agreement with Peugeot to develop the 5G connected car. 3 new trialsannounced.

– Telefonica committed to 5G, but wants to adapt the network to the customer and not the other way around…
