Overview

This chapter describes the classifications of major accidents involved in AGW. It also shows the procedural flow to handle the accidents in an effective manner.

Handling Major Accidents

This section explains briefly about the major accidents in AGW. Major accidents refer to alarms, faults or failures that cannot be located or settled through alarm or notification messages, which affects normal service of AGW system.

Overview

Classification Major accidents which affect the normal service of AGW system are classified into five parts.

Basic services cannot be provided due to causes, such as equipment breakdown, system down, system disorder, environment or human factor. The faults cannot be removed after preliminary handling and emergency handling is needed immediately.

Interruption of service that affects the major sites or customers, which draws the attention of main officials of customer.

Total interruption of foreground-background communication.

Influence on basic services provisioning by the other equipment.

Harmful to safety of the customer caused by the product.

Principles Main principles of handling major accidents are:

Once user identified or report the critical fault (level-1 fault), it is required to clear the faults and restore the system as soon as possible, so that the damage or loss caused by the fault should be minimal.

Customer’s interest should be taken care and try to protect it.

In the meantime, user can get technical support from ZTE local office or product division.

Sometimes faults may arise through the system. Faults such as total or partial power failure, network failure and database failure and other causes. User must thoroughly check the system, so that power and communication are confirmed without any faults. Then user may shift to Alarm management system to locate the possible node in which problem exists.

Procedures Once major accident happens, call the authority department immediately and report him to take timely measure to rectify the problem. Afterwards, submit a failure report to the authority department and supervisors. Besides these, organize relevant technicians, units and equipment suppliers to figure out causes of the accident, so that notes for effective measures can be taken from the subsequent operation to avoid its happening again. After handling major accident, fill in the detailed major accident record carefully and archive it.

Procedural flow of handling major accidents is shown in Figure 1.

Handling Common Faults

Overview

This chapter describes the classifications of common faults involved in ZXWN AGW. It also describes the methods to handle the common faults in an effective manner. Common faults are categorized into four types such as signaling and support faults, service faults, billing faults and alarm faults.

Interruption of Inter-Module Communication

Communication between the modules is interrupted. Symptom

Faults are found through background O&M system. Source

OMP board and UIM board Related Boards

The inter-module communication is controlled by the UIM_2 board. Therefore, the following causes may contribute to the blocking of inter-module communication:

Cause of Fault

Both the active and standby UIM_2 boards are unplugged or damaged at the same time.

GCS sub card on UIM_2 board is damaged.

OMP backplane RMPB, the UIM_2 backplane RUIM1 or the connection line is damaged.

OMP board is unplugged or damaged.

First make sure the states of the OMP board and the UIM_2 board is normal. If the board or sub card on the board is having any fault, then replace it.

Troubleshooting

Check the backplane for connecting OMP and UIM_2 boards and the internal network cables.

If any board is damaged, inform to local ZTE office. Precautions

Interruption of Communication between the NM server and MP

Communication between the NM server and MP is interrupted. Symptom

MP and NM Server Problem Related Modules

Cause of Fault In WiMAX system, data generated from the foreground are transferred from MP to NM server. They are further transferred to each operation and maintenance console. Once communication between the NM server and MP is interrupted, indicates that background loses contact with foreground. Maintenance personnel cannot able to monitor the running status of the foreground. These faults are caused by the following factors:

Network cable is broken or cause of fault switch.

Fault on network adapter of NM server.

Fault on OMP backplane RMPB.

OMP has been shut down or it is restarting.

Troubleshooting Following actions can be taken to avoid interruption between NM server and MP.

Check whether the MP is running normal.

Check whether the network cable and switch is normal.

Check the status of network adapter of NM server.

Check the network configurations of NM server and MP are correct.

If the NM server and MP are not located in the same LAN, please check the corresponding IP address configuration and gateway configuration are correct.

MS cannot Ping through the External CSN

When user pings through the external CSN from an MS, data packets cannot be returned by AGW.

Symptom

Source Faults are found through background O&M system.

GGLP Problem Related Board

Data sent by AGW are lost in IP layer. Cause of Fault

Check whether any transit route occurs on AGW user plane in route configuration. If no route has been found, then add on to the configuration table of AGW.

Troubleshooting

Precautions Check normal status of the system.

User Activation Fails on Non-Transparent Mode

Symptom AGW fails to activate the user on the non-transparent mode.

Faults are found through background O&M system. Source

If authentication during user activation is configured in AGW system, then:

Client information should be configured in the RADIUS server.

Related route information should be added to AGW

Address of the RADIUS server should be added to background configurations.

Check the configurations of RADIUS server and related Username and password.

CSN Cannot Ping through MS

CSN cannot ping through MS. Symptom

Cause of Fault CSN cannot able to send the data packets correctly to the corresponding GGLP, unless a route to next hop address of GGLP is configured on CSN.

Troubleshooting Configure a route on CSN from MS to AGW. Precautions Check normal status of the system and activation of MS.

DHCP Response Timed Out

DHCP does not have any response. Symptom

Faults are found through background O&M system. Source

Causes of Fault DHCP Response time out fault may be caused due to following reasons.

There is no route between GGLP and DHCP server.

The scope and address of DHCP server are not in the same network segment.

DHCP client IP has not been configured in IP Protocol Management.

Following measures can be taken to avoid DHCP response time out fault.

Troubleshooting

Check whether the static route is added through OMC client.

Make sure to add corresponding routes to DHCP server.

Modify the mask and scope of DHCP server to remain same as DHCP server.

User Activation Fails because NAI Does Not Support It

User activation fails because NAI does not support it. Symptom

Source Faults are found through background O&M system.

None Problem Related Board

NAI does not support user activation. Cause of Fault

Troubleshooting Configure the corresponding NAI via the background; or query through the signaling trace to check the correct NAI.

Precautions Check normal status of the system.

User activation fails in AGW system. Symptom

Faults are found through background O&M system. Source

Cause of Fault Address IP pool of AGW system is null.

Check the background configurations and make sure the IP address pool of corresponding NAI is too small. If it is quite large, please use a probe to query the R_GIPOOL table entry on OMP to make sure the corresponding NAI has an idle address (status=0).

Troubleshooting

Check normal status of the system. Precautions

User Activation Fails because of Failure to Obtain DHCP Server

Symptom User activation fails due to failure in obtaining DHCP server.

Faults are found through background O&M system. Source

Fail to get DHCP server Cause of Fault

Following measures can be taken to avoid user activation failure Troubleshooting

Check whether the DHCP server address is configured correctly on corresponding NAI configuration.

Check if there is any route between the GGLP and DHCP server. If there is no route found, add a static route to DHCP server in protocol stack.

Check the scope and address of DHCP server are located in the same network segment (Mask of scope should also be same as DHCP server).

Precautions Check normal status of the system.

Following measures are taken to avoid the fault.

Check if there is any route existing from RADIUS server to RADIUS client.

Check the address of RADIUS client is configured on the background. Preferably the RADIUS address should be located in same network segment as the signaling address of the AGW. If address of RADIUS client is different from signaling address of the AGW, add the address of RADIUS client.

Check the communication between the RADIUS server and the GGLP to see that they are in same network segment.

Find the server.cfg file on RADIUS server and change IP address into the address of RADIUS server.

Run RADIUS server configurations and add a client in the client configurations, fill in the IP address and share key of the RADIUS client, open [Control Panel --> Services] to stop the “zxRADIUS” service, and then restart the service.

Precautions Following precautionary methods should be taken.

Refer to file “radius*.log” to view the information, where * indicates the number. As there may be multiple log files, just find the latest one.

User account suspended: User group where the user is located is set as "Attack protection", but the property should be set as "Normal".

Password mismatch: Check the share key and password is correct.

Glossary

A byte, generally, is an 8-bit quantity of information, used mainly in referring to parallel data transfer, and data storage; also generally referred to in data communications as an octet or character.

Routers In IEEE 802 local area network (LAN) standards, routers are devices that connect autonomous networks of like architecture at the network layer (layer 3). Unlike a bridge, which operates transparently to communicating end-terminals at the logical link layer (layer 2); a router reacts only to packets addressed to it by either a terminal or another router. Routers perform packet (as opposed to frame) routing and forwarding functions; they can select one of many potential paths based on transit delay, network congestion or other criteria. How routers perform their functions is largely determined by the protocols implemented in the networks they interconnect.

Server In a network, a server is equipment that makes available file, database, printing, facsimile, communications or other services to client terminals/stations with access to the network. A gateway is a server that permits client terminal/station access to external communications networks and/or information systems.

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol Client manages network configuration by registering and updating IP addresses and Domain Name Server (DNS) names. Do not have to manually change the IP settings when a client, such as a roaming user, travels throughout the network. The client is automatically given a new IP address regardless of the subnet it reconnects to—as long as a DHCP server is accessible from each of those subnets.
