Ethnographic Research
The Hammer Lab
The Hammer Lab, one of Hofstra University’s computer labs, is the area I observed for the ethnographic research.
The lab consisted of 29 students, 25 of them using school designated computers. Everyone was within the age range of 19-22.
It was a highly calm and quiet setting. Majority of the people have headphones in their ears and seem busy with their studies.
Many students who are not working on the designated school Mac’s, have their own MacBook laptops.
Around 5 students gather in a corner and discuss their problems with the printers, along with the weak wificonnections in their dorm rooms.
The man in the black hoodie plays his music very loudly, which is disturbing the other students trying to study.
Personal Interview with Christina Kaschte Have you ever
been a victim of financial fraud?
“I have never personally, I like to believe I’m smarter than that!”
“I think people need to get educated about Financial Scams over the internet, especially older people who are not as familiar with the internet as us young people.”
“We were thought to be careful of who you talk to or trust over the internet, maybe someone should focus on educating older people who do not know the dangers?”
Personal Interview with Edwin Samuels
Do you know anyone who has fallen victim to a financial scam over the internet?
“My uncle lost a few thousand dollars when falling victim to ‘junk email’ scams”
