Ethnicity & Disease Annual Report 2018 2
From the Editor-in-ChiefRoland J. Thorpe, Jr, PhD
Dear Friends,
Thank you for making 2018 yet another remarkable year for Ethnicity & Disease (Ethn Dis)! This year marked the journal’s 28th year of publishing research and scientific evidence on ethnic health and disease patterns and associated risk factors.
Before I share our accomplishments, I would like to express my sincerest gratitude to the many individuals who make Ethn Dis a great journal. I would like to thank Anne M. Dubois, MWC, managing editor and Mark H. Betourne, technical director, for their tireless efforts in overseeing the critical infrastructure and day-to day operations of the journal. Our 11 associate editors, editor-in-chief emeritus, and 12 editorial board members of the 2018 editorial board continued to play a key role in maintaining the highest quality and direction of the journal.
In February 2018, we learned that the International Society of Hypertension in Blacks (ISHIB), who was the publisher of Ethn Dis, was merging with the American Heart Association (AHA). However, AHA did not have any intention of expanding their journal collection. We were asked by ISHIB to take on the journal and we moved forward with creating Ethnicity & Disease, Inc. as publisher of the journal. We are proud to announce that Ethnicity & Disease, Inc., is now a Maryland nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, whose sole purpose and mission is the publication of the journal. I am grateful for the leadership of ISHIB for their oversight and support throughout the years. This collective, dedicated team has done an outstanding job at expanding our readership and strengthening our quality of peer-reviewed publications.
My vision for Ethn Dis is straightforward: to review manuscript submissions in a timely fashion while maintaining scientific rigor; to provide health disparities and health equity scholars a home for their work; and to encourage the submission of thought-provoking, cutting-edge articles that can lead to policy- and intervention-relevant solutions. My goals, which we have already begun to address, for 2019 include:
• publishing three supplements,• enhancing the reviewer experience and panel, • increasing visibility for the Ethn Dis and improving metrics measuring impact,• involving the editorial board members.
It is with an extraordinary amount of pride that I present this annual report that highlights many of Ethn Dis notable achievements in 2018. Within this report, you will find empirical updates as well as organizational and process initiatives for the journal. Please celebrate these achievements and continued progress with me as we continue to pursue the journal’s goals for the upcoming year. The accomplishments during the past year and the work ahead depends on the contributions of the dedicated editorial team, the support of our subscribers, the contributions of our authors, and the interests of our readers who extend the journal’s reach by translating our published research into policy, programs and other activities that work toward improved health outcomes for all populations. I am immensely grateful to those individuals whose energy and support sustain and expand the journal.
Thank you and I look forward to another amazing year for Ethn Dis!

Ethnicity&Disease
Ethnicity & Disease is an international journal that exclusively publishes
information on the causal and associative relationships in the etiology of
common illnesses through the study of ethnic patterns of disease. Our peer-
reviewed journal publishes original reports, reviews, editorials and perspectives,
special articles, commentaries, and letters on such topics as ethnic differentials
in disease rates, the impact of migration on health status, social and ethnic
factors related to health care access, and metabolic epidemiology. A major
priority of the journal is to provide a forum for exchange between the
United States and developing countries around the world.

2018 & 2019
Peer Review Panel
In 2018, the peer review working group developed a mentoring-in-peer-review
program, which will rollout in early 2019. Through this effort, the journal’s
associate editors will offer a structured, high-touch training in peer review via
regular mentor-mentee interactions. Mentees, junior faculty at research institutions
across the country, will improve skills in providing a constructive, critical
assessment of scholarly papers.

The 2019 and 2020 volumes will feature themed issues on topics important to
the journal’s focus to encourage basic research in the ethnic patterns of health and
disease, to improve the educational procedures for teaching about these diseases, and
to disseminate research and education information accordingly. Volume 29, Issue 4,
entitled Training the Next Generation of Health Equity Researchers: Exploring STEM
Pathways and Best Practices, will be released in fall 2019. Other themes are under
consideration for Volume 30 to be published in 2020.
