“In my organisation, stated values and actual values practised are worlds apart, especially since the last reform (2008). We are probably the most corrupt organisation in the country.”
“[I’ve seen] a number of situations where profit is put before living by our values – not in a way that would be in any sense contrary to the law, health and/or safety, but shoddy all the same.”
“Senior leaders have to realise the catastrophic consequences of not following an ethical line. It wasn’t that the guys at the top of Enron were deliberately trying to screw the system, but they weren’t in the minds of their managers who had to do their jobs.”

Ethical Leadership Case Study No. 1 – Low-cost Manufacture
Situation: You’re a premium priced supplier - 2 times more expensive than your main competitor.
Profits are significantly down – you have to find ways to reduce costs – you can’t increase prices.
A low cost supplier of steel fabrications in India has been proposed.
Issues - Unethical practicesPoor and exploitative working conditionsPotential of putting your own and other British workers out of work

Ethical Leadership Case Study No. 2 – Making Redundancies
Situation - In a critical redundancy situation, one candidate in is on the list due to very poor performance, attendance and attitude.
Major contributing factor is his son has muscular dystrophy, and his wife has just been diagnosed with breast cancer.
Issues – How can you demonstrate compassion when you need to cut jobs?
What do you do?

Ethical Leadership Case Study No. 3 - Potentially eliminating a Competitor
Situation - A competitor has closely copied the designs of your products and all marketing material for a number of years. They represent a small portion of the market, but they have definitely taken > £1m business away from you.
You have just found out that their products are not compliant with new
legislation. If they fail to comply with legislation, they could be forced to withdraw their products from sale, thus closing that part of their operation down. It has cost you a considerable amount of money and on going cost to ensure compliance.
Issues - Are you prepared to see people made redundant through your own actions?
What do you do?
