INTRODUCTION

As a human service professional, there are times when you may need to deal with an ethical issue.

For this presentation we will describe at least three ethical issues that a human service professional may face and will include the following:• The potential impact on the family setting due to the intervention• The potential impact on both the human services professional and the client

within the school setting

ETHICAL ISSUES-CONFLICT OF INTEREST

A conflict of interest is a situation in which someone's personal (financial, political, professional, social, sexual, family, etc.) interests could influence his judgment or actions in a financial or other decision, in carrying out his job, or in his relationships with participants.

THE POTENTIAL IMPACT ON THE FAMILY SETTING DUE TO THE INTERVENTION

• The objectivity and effectiveness of therapy may be reduced.

• Child may be placed in foster care• Child may be in more danger due to reporting allegations

of abuse• Child may be put up for adoption • The spouses of the alleged or convicted abusers also

suffer from a heavy emotional burden, as do any other children in the family.

THE POTENTIAL IMPACT ON BOTH THE HUMAN SERVICES PROFESSIONAL AND THE CLIENT WITHIN THE SCHOOL SETTING

• The relationship with the client changes• Parents may panic, remove the child from the school or move to another
