Alex Fraser has built a reputation on reliable project delivery and environmental leadership.

We’ve worked with long-standing customers and regulators at every level of government to develop a range of high quality products. Tight specifications, stringent testing and an industry leading history of performance over more than twenty years, means Alex Fraser products are used with confidence on all sorts of construction projects.

Alex Fraser operates six state-of-the-art recycling facilities in Victoria, Queensland and New South Wales, with a combined production capacity of over four million tonnes a year. In addition, two asphalt production facilities supply and lay high quality asphalt across Melbourne.

Our customers work to meet demanding project outcomes. Alex Fraser’s long term commitment to developing people and improving processes is focussed on supporting our customers on their projects. When our people are out working, they are also supported by modern, innovative and well-maintained equipment that sets a standard for the industry.

Our reputation for environmental leadership is based on years of focus on resource efficiency. An innovative approach, backed up with solid research and plenty of persistence has seen markets developed for a wide range of materials that were previously landfilled. This reduces landfill, preserves quarry resources and supports carbon efficient projects.

To date the Alex Fraser Group has recycled more than 28 million tonnes of construction and demolition materials and has a capacity of over 4 million tonnes per year.

People choose Alex Fraser when they need a project delivered on time, to a high quality standard, along with the best environmental outcome possible.

At five recycling facilities, Alex Fraser produces high-quality civil construction materials, including road base, aggregates and sand. These products are produced from concrete, brick, asphalt, rock and glass. The products are used in construction where quarried materials were previously used.

Our advanced facilities are recognised globally for their functionality focused on delivering high volumes of precise products to customers.

Thousands of tonnes of these recycled products are used every day in asset maintenance, subdivisions and all kinds of construction. Our modern facilities are designed to produce and deliver high quality products in the large daily volumes our customers require. We are able to respond quickly to changing project requirements. Over 20 years of experience in supplying large projects including freeways, tunnels, ports and airports means we are well placed to meet the demands of large-scale infrastructure projects.

Alex Fraser pioneered the construction and demolition materials recycling industry in Australia. 25 years on it continues to grow and expand its operations as it satisfies an ever-growing demand and need for quality recycled products within Australia.

The Alex Fraser network of sites in Brisbane and in Melbourne has been developed so that they are convenient locations for our customers to drop off and pick up materials quickly.

RECYCLING

The recycled product was consistent in nature and achieving compaction was quite easy. The service provided to Eastlink was second to none.

ASPHALTIn the fast-paced and highly-competitive world of asphalt production and paving, Alex Fraser Asphalt has established itself as one of Melbourne’s leading suppliers. A range of products that comply with VicRoads specifications are used every day on a wide range of projects. High-capacity plants and large hot storage capacity cater for larger project work.

The Alex Fraser paving crews are regarded as the best in the business. They operate the latest equipment which can compete on either large or small projects and provide great results for customers time and time again. Our plant in Laverton, and our new Dandenong South facility enable the company to support projects across Melbourne.

Alex Fraser Asphalt has one of the most professional and reliable dedicated asphalt crews in Melbourne. We were pleased with the quality of the product and impressed by the service. The bonus is that we know that Alex Fraser Asphalt is also produced in an environmentally sustainable manner – giving us and our customers valuable piece of mind.

INDUSTRIAL SERVICESIn April 2012, fellow Swire subsidiary Swire Industrial Services was amalgamated into the Alex Fraser Group.

Our specialist recycling facility in New South Wales operates alongside BlueScope Steel’s production site in Wollongong. Our Swire Industrial Services division recycles scrap metal from the steel manufacturing process, into small crushed steel balls. These recycled steel products are used as coolant material. The coolant allows for better temperature control and greater product quality.

The use of recycled steel waste material into coolant was pioneered by Swire Industrial Services as a genuine opportunity to save steel production costs. This in turn generates further efficiencies and energy savings. These savings, whilst small, go a long way towards assisting carbon savings in one of the highest carbon emitting industries in the world.

The company has conducted itself most professionally,in particularly the efforts of your drivers and personalmanagement and supervision of the contract deliverables has been exceptional.

The Alex Fraser Group is committed to the sustainable use and reuse of resources. By providing an environmentally sustainable alternative range of products to the infrastructure market, we are helping to reduce waste, landfill and the carbon footprint of infrastructure projects.

The RMIT Centre for Design recently completed a life cycle comparison of crushed concrete aggregate with traditionally quarried stone aggregate. This ground-breaking research concluded that recycled concrete products have a carbon footprint 65 percent less than equivalent products from quarries.

In Asphalt recycled sand and asphalt are used wherever possible and our plants have the capability to supply warm mix asphalt products.

Alex Fraser also consistently innovates in the operation of its own facilities, seeking to clearly measure and reduce energy consumption during production.

The Clean Air Society awarded Alex Fraser in 2010 for its innovative and ongoing efforts in managing air quality at its facilities.

This use of recycled materials and lower energy consumption during production significantly reduces CO2 emissions over the scope of infrastructure developments.

Alex Fraser conducts ongoing research with bodies

including the Australian Road Research Board

(ARRB), VicRoads, the Department of Transport

and Main Roads, Sustainability Victoria, Swinburne

University, Queensland University of Technology

(QUT) and the Royal Melbourne Institute of

Technology (RMIT).

For example, in 2008, ARRB undertook falling weight

deflectometer tests on a road system constructed

in 1997 to compare the performance of quarried

rock road base and recycled crushed concrete

road base, laid by the same contractor, in the same

conditions and subject to the same traffic load.

In ARRB’s opinion, the crushed concrete road

base would provide a much greater life expectancy

that the crushed rock road base. This leads to lower

infrastructure costs in the long run.

An ongoing research program consistently

improves the quality of asphalt, road base and pipe

bedding products.

RESEARCH

Through rigorous product testing we ensure

our products are made to stringent VicRoads

specifications in Victoria, the Department of

Transport and Main Roads (DTMR) specifications

in Queensland and other specifications from water

authorities and local government. The specifications

set out a high-frequency testing regime.

During the production of asphalt and road base,

NATA-accredited laboratories ensure the standards

are met, and ensure consistency by meeting the

high-frequency of testing required.

ISO 9001 certification, well-trained people and

modern equipment support the production, testing

and delivery of consistent materials from our

recycling facilities.

QUALITY

SAFETY AND QUALITY AWARDS

A fundamental part of Alex Fraser’s success is

its uncompromising commitment to occupational

health and safety standards, and its detailed and

systemic approach to hazard identification and

controls.

In more than 135 years of national and international

operations, Alex Fraser has maintained, and in fact

pioneered, some of the highest safety standards in

the business.

This includes mandatory pre-planning and task-

specific safety analysis, for high-risk activities, and

daily toolbox meetings.

We also maintain a vigorous audit process both

internally and externally. Gap analysis is one tool

used to maintain a continual improvement cycle

which is focused on improving both the system and

the overall culture of safety within the team.

Alex Fraser is certified to ISO 9001 quality and

environmental, and AS4801 safety standards.

SAFETYFederation. This certification provides industry

standards based on ISO 9001 (Quality), AS/NZ

4801 (OH&S) and ISO 14001 (Environment).

Alex Fraser products are the preferred choice

for governments, contractors, engineers and

developers alike who want to make responsible

choices for the environment and meet established

specification criteria.
