MUMBAI, DELHI, BENGALURU THURSDAY,APRIL 7, 2016 ET PANACHE TRAVEL NEWS YOU CAN USE 2 Savouring the traditional New Year PIC OF THE WEEK E T-Panache Travel reader Siddhesh Naik recently trekked up to the tallest fort of Maharashtra, situat- ed in Satana district of Nashik. He says, “There are two routes to climb this fort. We chose the East end from Waghambe Village. The other one is from the Salherwadi on the West end. The climb is easy but the gradient however is lengthy. It takes approximately four hours to climb this fort. When you stand at the base vil- lage, on the left side, you can see Salota and on the right side is Sal- her. As you begin your climb, on the way you can spot carved wa- ter tanks, which are designed in such a way that very little sun- light reaches the water level and thus keeps the water inside the tanks quite cool even in sum- mers. On top of the fort, there is a temple of Parashuram. In fact, you must make it a point to take a good look below from temple top to get a 360 degree view of the en- tire area. It is indeed breathtak- ing. I would suggest you soak in the sights during sunset time.” Siddhesh Naik PICTURE ENTRY: Enter this contest by sending in a picture you shot along with a picture of yourself to [email protected]. DISCLAIMER: Pics sent to us are considered a property of ET-Panache Travel. The Great Himalayan National Park is carved out of the splendid mountain terrain of Kullu district, and is the largest protected area in Himachal Pradesh. The secluded Tirthan Valley harbours a variety of wildlife common to this area — wild mountain goats like the Bharal, Goral, and Serow, the Himalayan Brown Bear and predators like the Leopard and the very rare Snow Leopard. Birds like Himalayan Pied Kingfisher, Brown Dipper, Bearded Vulture, and Himalayan Parakeet can be seen during the BNHS trek. Date of trek: 16– 22nd April 2016 (ex Delhi). Grade: Moderate, three day hike from Ecozone into Park, daily 8-10 km gradual gradient walk among the hill forests taking about five- seven hrs. To join this trek, get more details by sending an email to: [email protected] FROM MUMBAI: UMRED KARHANDLA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY, MAHARASHTRA GETAWAY QUICK FROM BANGALORE: RANGANATHITTU BIRD SANCTUARY, KARNATAKA Once the examination schedule of school kids is over, it’s time to take them on a fun picnic session amidst nature to beat the heat. We suggest you take your kiddie group along to a green spot of Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary, few kilometers away from Mysore. The drive is pleasant and once you get here, make the most of the ranger-guided boat tours of the isles, available throughout the day. It’s a smart way to watch birds, crocodiles, otters and bats. There is no lodging at this tiny sanctuary, so visitors will need to make arrangements to stay over at Mysore or Srirangapatna. The Salim Ali Interpretation Centre, maintained by Forest Department, screens a 4- minute documentary to special interest groups and it’s a good idea to watch it before you go bird watching, The islets inside the sanctuary came into being when an embarkment across the Kaveri River was built in 1648 by the then Mysore King — Kantirava Narasimharaja Wadeyar. The ornithologist Dr Salim Ali observed that the isles formed an important nesting ground for birds, and persuaded the Wadeyar kings of Mysore to declare the area a wildlife sanctuary in 1940. The Forest Department of Karnataka State is maintaining the bird sanctuary and puts its efforts to improve the sanctuary, which includes purchase of nearby private lands to expand the protected area. Some of the birds you come across on your birding tour include snake bird, darters, spoonbills, river tern, open bill storks, white Ibis, little cormorants, egret, heron, stone plougher, kingfisher and partridge. Apart from home to native avian habitants, the sanctuary each year attracts a large number of migratory birds. Wildlife experts believe that migratory birds come to this sanctuary as far as from Siberia, Australia and even North America. www.karnatakatourism.org LOOK CLOSELY: A rare sighting of a tigress with its cubs The Umred Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary, about 58 kms from Nagpur is spread over Pauni, Umred, Kuhi and Bhiva- pur Taluka. It’s easy to guess that this sanctuary has also connection with Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve through forest along Wainganga Riv- er. The sanctuary is home to resident breeding tigers, herds of Gaur, wild dogs and also rare animals like flying squirrels, pangolins and honey badg- er. Located 40 kms north of Tadoba- Andhari Tiger Reserve and 50 km southwest of Nagzira Wildlife Sanc- tury and 60 kms from Nagpur, Maha- rashtra, this sanctuary is popular with student groups who come on school guided excursions. Pench Tiger Reserve is 80 km to the north- west. In the last few years, the num- ber of tourists inflow has increased, thanks to the easy connectivity from Umred and Nagpur city. The tourists who have visited here in the past have been quite lucky to spot not one by even tiger families together.
