This course provides introductory-level reinforcement of paramedic theory and skills as students participate as part of the multi-disciplinary healthcare team during rotations through various departments of local hospitals, health departments, clinics, and specialty centers. Students also serve as part of the emergency medical services (EMS) team during rotations onboard advanced life support (ALS) ambulances. The Program provides clinical schedules, and students practice under the direct supervision of licensed clinical facilitators and/or preceptors.

Students will achieve program and course outcomes through a mixture of lecture, reading assignments, demonstrations, class discussions, multimedia, student presentations, writing assignments, community service projects, skills practice, and supervised clinical and field practice.

The Program has as its goal: To prepare competent entry-level paramedics in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains. Upon successful completion of the IRSC Paramedic program, students must be able to:

1. Demonstrate an ability to understand, interpret, and apply EMS and general medical knowledge necessary to function as a paramedic in healthcare and public safety settings.

2. Demonstrate technical proficiency in a broad range of paramedic level EMS skills, both difficult and routine.

3. Demonstrate effective teamwork in managing simulated emergency scenarios.

4. Demonstrate proficiency in advanced patient assessment and formulation and implementation of treatment plans for patients with a variety of medical and traumatic emergencies.

5. Demonstrate leadership in the management of prehospital care. 6. Demonstrate an ability to conduct oneself as a paramedic in an ethical and

professional manner.

permitted limits may result in a grade of “U” for this course and withdrawal from the program. All hours are required, and all hours listed are minimums. A student missing more than one (1) shift for any reason may result in a grade of “U” for the course and withdrawal from the program. To ensure on-time completion of the paramedic program, students should not miss any clinical or field shifts and should complete all required documentation of those shifts within the time period specified. Students are also encouraged to obtain and document more than the minimum patient contacts. Some students may be required to complete additional clinical or field experience shifts to complete all required skills. Clinical Assignments Clinical educators may assign work or quizzes to be completed during clinical rotations or by a certain date. Fisdap Scheduling All shift scheduling must be completed in Fisdap (www.fisdap.net) during a specified scheduling window. Students will be advised when the scheduling window(s) for the various shifts will be open by announcement in Blackboard. Failure to schedule within the window will result in either a shift being assigned at the program’s discretion or the missing shift being counted as an absence. Students must be careful in their shift selection. Once a shift is selected in Fisdap and the scheduling window closes, the student is considered scheduled and is responsible for the shift. Failure to attend the shift will be handled as an absence. No schedule changes are permitted after a scheduling window closes. The Program’s clinical and field affiliates coordinate numerous schedules (i.e., other programs that use the same sites, Explorer programs, etc.), and any change from the schedule initially provided to each site is very inconvenient to them. Assignments Assignments may be completed in the Blackboard, Navigate 2, Connect, or LC-Ready systems or on paper. Each assignment will have a designated location for submission. All assignments will have due dates, and unless otherwise announced, will be considered due 1 hour before the start of class on the due date. Students are responsible for all material and assignments. Students missing class must contact a fellow group/squad/class member for any missed information.

Unless the instructor is notified BEFORE the assignment is due and due to extreme circumstances provides an opportunity for the student to submit his/her assignment late, late assignments will result in a grade of 0. Avoid waiting until the last minute to complete assignments to allow adequate time in case of any issues with technology resources. Grades Official clinical/field goals will be tracked in Fisdap. As this is a pass/fail class requiring completion of all requirements, the grade in Blackboard will not reflect your official status until the end of the course. Students should check their goals status on a regular basis, and any questions should be directed to the clinical coordinator or their lead lecture instructor. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that all skills are properly recorded in Fisdap and all grades are properly recorded in the Blackboard gradebook. Shift Attendance Verification & Fisdap Documentation Regular weekly clinical shift attendance will be verified by the IRSC EMS instructor onsite directly in Fisdap by signing off on the shift. All other clinical and field shift attendance requires phone verification upon arrival and departure from the station. The student must call in no later than the scheduled start of their shift and no sooner than the scheduled end of their shift. Students may use their personal cell phone to make these calls. On arrival, the student should state their name, facility/agency and unit/station of the shift, and the name of the supervisor/charge nurse/station officer for the shift. On departure, the student should simply state their name. The ONLY phone numbers to use is (do not email) (772) xxx-xxxx. Students required to make other notifications regarding a scheduled shift (i.e., moved to another fire-rescue station due to lack of a preceptor, going home sick, tardiness) must use the same phone number. Email should not be used for any of these notifications. Failure to make proper notifications for a shift will be treated as an absence. All clinical and field shift activity must be logged into Fisdap within 72 hours of the shift completion. Any shift that is not properly documented in Fisdap during the data entry window will be marked as an absence, and skills and patient contacts may not count toward program requirements. In addition to documenting patient contacts, you will be required to complete an evaluation. For clinical shifts, you will need to complete a Site Evaluation. For field shifts, you will need to complete a Preceptor Evaluation form. When completed with all shift entries and evaluations, lock the shift. If the shift is not manually locked, students will receive an automated notification reminding them that the shift documentation is not complete and that the shift will automatically lock at the end

of the 72-hour period. Auto-locked shifts without complete documentation including evaluations will not be treated as an absence. In the evaluations, the Program will be looking to see a progression in preceptor evaluations from “not competent” to “competent.” It is expected that you will not be very good in your first clinical/field shifts because you won’t know much yet, but as you learn more and gain experience, you should progress to being more competent. The Program expects to see that reflected in your evaluation paperwork/entries. If you are not progressing, you can expect additional remedial training and assignments. However, in contrast, if all your evaluations are excellent from the beginning, the validity of that evaluation will be questioned (i.e., possibly “pencil whipped”) and will likely assign additional shifts with preceptors that are also EMS faculty to verify that skill level. Field Patient Care Reports Students must complete a field patient care report for EVERY patient contact during their field shifts unless there were no patient contacts. The report should document the patient assessment findings and actions taken by you. The reports must be completed in Fisdap and will be evaluated by course lead instructors and/or clinical facilitators. Subject to Change Notice All material, assignments, and deadlines are subject to change with prior notice. It is your responsibility to stay in touch with your instructor, review the course site regularly, and communicate with other students to adjust as needed if there is any change in the course.

Writing Expectations All students should write at college level in all course discussions and assignments. Citation and Reference Style Students should use the APA citation style unless otherwise directed by their instructor.

Course Specific Technology Requirements Both academia and the EMS industry have become more reliant on technology, and the EMS Program has been progressively integrating more technology into its courses. The EMS Program requires all students to access online resources including instructor resources on Blackboard; publisher resources on Navigate 2; review and study materials on LC-Ready; classroom testing and lab, clinical, and field scheduling and skills tracking on Fisdap; email on Office 365; and classroom attendance tracking on AccuClass. Additionally, students may use Office 365 for writing assignments and other work within their courses. All students are required to possess an iPad and are required to bring the iPad with them to all lecture, lab, clinical, and field class sessions, including the first day on August 21, 2017. The college does not have any devices available for student use during class sessions, and failure to have a device on a given day may result in consequences such as grades of 0 on work completed in class or the inability to get skills signed off in the lab. The table below lists the minimum and recommended specifications for the device:
