Esterházy Palace, once a residence of great magnates and now a striking landmark at the heart of Burgenland’s capital Eisenstadt, is one of Austria’s most beautiful Baroque palaces. Today a museum, venue for cultural events and research centre, it houses the exceptional private collection of the Esterházy dynasty. The Haydnsaal was commissioned by Prince Paul I as a Baroque banqueting hall complete with lavish frescoes. In the 20th century, this “Great Hall” was renamed Haydnsaal and, boasting superb acoustics and decoration, it is now a jewel among concert venues worldwide.

In 2016 the Haydnsaal will again be a stunning setting for the classic.Esterhazy concerts.

The Haydnsaal can be viewed as part of the palace tour or individually with the Haydn ticket.*

The palace tour shows the magnificent apartment of the Esterházy Princesses and provides a glimpse into the lives and worlds of three charismatic ladies: Maria Josefa Hermenegilde, née Princess Liechtenstein, passionate patro-ness of Joseph Haydn; Maria Theresia, née Princess von Thurn und Taxis, lionized beauty at the Congress of Vienna, and Lady Sarah Child-Villiers. Meet personalities from the past and discover the fascinating and moving stories of their loves, marital bliss and troubles.

The palace chapel and the Haydnsaal ‒ world-famous for its acoustics – are further highlights of this tour.

The Haydn ticket includes two exhibitions and compellingly captures the life of Joseph Haydn, and the music, festivals and lifestyle at the Esterházy court. Joseph Haydn served the Esterházy princes as Hofkapellmeister and composer for over 40 years. The famous maestro, “father of the String Quartet” and “virtuoso of the ensemble”, composed masses, operas, symphonies, chamber music and Hausmusik for the aristocratic family. These included the legendary “Emperor” Quartet that was played for the very first time in Eisenstadt in 1797.

Haydn explosiveInteractive displays, projections and superb exhibits convey the life of this musical genius – from his beginnings in Eisen-stadt, through his stardom in London to his later work. The show also traces his impact as a composer both then and now. Visitors can admire some of the maestro’s personal and professional documents and original instruments, such as the fortepiano belonging to his patroness Princess Maria Josefa Hermenegilde.

Highlights of Esterházy PalaceThe permanent Highlights exhibition presents exquisite objects from the Esterhazy collection and offers glimpses of how the princes lived and celebrated. Major attractions include the Esterházy dynasty’s silverware (the world’s largest surviving Empire silver service produced by Würth in Vienna) and the last known console table from the workshops of Giuseppe Briati in Venice. The exhibition also offers fascina-ting insights into how the palace was built. In some places the historic walls and floors have been uncovered, revealing many layers of history and a detailed glimpse of the architecture through 300 years.

With this ticket you can also visit the Haydnsaal.

TheWine Museum

A cellar full of culture

Why not explore Austria’s largest wine museum? In the 500-year-old vaults of the palace, there are 700 unique objects relating to wine and wine-making just waiting to be discovered – from the oldest barrel to Burgenland’s earliest Baumpresse (a historic basket wine press). Encounter the long history of Esterhazy’s “bacchanalian” side! For even back in 1666, the palace’s cellars could accommodate 280,000 lit-res, and servants – including Joseph Haydn – would some-times be paid in “pails” of wine. From the study of vines and viticulture under the Esterházy princes to distillation or the production of wine and Sekt (Austrian sparkling wine), here everything revolves around the joys of the grape.

Dating back to the 13th century, Forchtenstein Castle was acquired by the Esterházy family in 1622. They commissioned the structure we see today – a soaring edifice and bulwark that is Burgenland’s most imposing landmark. It was here that the Esterházys’ weapons and armour were stored and Prince Paul I, great founder of the dynasty, established his unique Treasure Chamber and an archive. The castle still exudes the magic of bygone days and is a fabulous place to explore history or celebrate in a stylish setting.

Encounter impressive exhibits and rooms steeped in history on this tour through the castle. Our guides provide fascinating insights into the treasures of this Baroque stronghold, inclu-ding the inner courtyard with the largest secco murals north of the Alps, the historic castle well, the oratory, palace chapel and kitchens. Four hundred years of the Esterházy family’s mi-litary history are just waiting to be discovered!

Grenades, Flags, GrenadiersTreasures from the historic arsenal of the Esterházy princes

For a long period, Forchtenstein Castle, site of one of Europe’s earliest museums, served as the arsenal of the Esterházy princes. Covering ten rooms, the exhibition Grenades, Flags, Grenadiers offers insights into life in uniform and the well-stocked Esterházy stores of weapons and military equipment – today one of Europe’s largest private armouries.

Prince Paul I created his family tree and conjured up the many myths surrounding it. He also commissioned the Esterházy Gallery of Ancestors. Today Central Europe’s largest Baroque family gallery, this is a most impressive rendezvous of forebears – both real and imagined.

Silver furniturePrecious masterpieces – superlatives in silver

The tour of the Gallery of Ancestors culminates in the room of silver furniture. Here you can see unique Baroque silver furniture from the Esterházy family’s Treasure Chamber. The most precious highlight is the opulent silver table by David Schwestermüller (1665), a true masterpiece, both in material and craftsmanship. Even at Versailles one cannot encounter such treasures! For although at many European courts precious silver furniture was melted down to replenish the war chests, at Forchtenstein Castle it was preserved for posterity.

With the ticket for the Gallery of Ancestors you can also visit the following exhibition:

Hunting has been important for the Esterházy family and was practised to a high standard for four centuries. At Forchten-stein Castle a special exhibition is devoted to this Esterházy passion, illustrating how hunting has developed from the 17th century to today’s wildlife management run by the Esterhazy Forestry department.

Once hidden down secret passageways, shut away behind ingenious locks, protected by psalms and, according to legend, guarded by a stuffed crocodile, the Esterházy Treasure Chamber has survived the centuries largely intact. Immerse yourself in this mysterious world and appreciate a true rarity!

For the Esterházy Treasure Chamber is the world’s only Baroque Kunst- und Wunderkammer (cabinet of curiosities) that is still to be found at its original site, complete with some wondrous and outlandish objects.

St. Margarethen Quarry

35

St. Margarethen Quarry is one of Europe’s oldest and largest quarries. Its sandy limestone has been quarried here since antiquity and continues to be extracted today. It was used to build and restore St. Stephen’s Cathedral and also for buildings around the Ringstrasse in Vienna. Originally formed by a prehistoric inland sea, in the 20th century an abundance of important fossils were discovered in this ancient stone (some a staggering 25 million years old). In 2001 St. Margarethen Quarry and the region of Fertő-Neusiedlersee were added to the UNESCO List of World Heritage Sites.

St. Margarethen Quarry boasts one of Europe’s largest and most impressive open-air stages. In fact there are two arenas hewn from stone: the large stage, a huge outdoor concert hall with space for almost 5,000 people, and the smaller Ruffini stage with up to 2,300 seats. Great opera has been shown on the main stage for almost twenty years. Opera in a quarry is a compelling and powerful experience.

In summer 2016, coinciding with the traditional St. Mar-garethen Passion plays on the quarry’s main stage, we in-vite you to be swept away by Gaetano Donizetti’s cap-tivating, melancholy comic opera “The Elixir of Love”. Donizetti’s enchanting melodies blend with the story’s charming humour and at sunset audiences are sure to suc-cumb to the magic of Nemorino’s famous aria “Una furti-va lagrima”. An unforgettably romantic night at the opera!
